Worley not on NLDS roster
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Some tidbits from today's 8-7 loss to the Braves, which ultimately gave Atlanta the Wild Card and helped avoid a one-game playoff between them and the Padres, who lost to the Giants.
-Vance Worley's solid performance in a win over the Braves on Saturday wasn't enough to win him a spot on the National League Division Series roster. But the rookie righthander is very much on the team's radar. Prior to the game, the Phillies told him they were sending him to the instructional league in Clearwater, Fla. to stay sharp in case he is needed to make an emergency start against the Reds.
Worley could still factor into the equation for the National League Championship Series if the Phillies advance that far. The NLCS will feature one less off day, meaning the Phillies could need a fourth starter, and thus need extra help in the bullpen.
Theoretically, this could change if J.C. Romero ends up missing the NLDS and the Phillies decide to tap Worley to fill the open spot in the bullpen. But the plan as of right now is to keep him sharp as a starter.
-Charlie Manuel expressed optimism that Carlos Ruiz and J.C. Romero would both be ready for Game 1, although he said he would not know more until Tuesday. Ruiz said he was hopeful for Game 1. Romero said he expected to be ready. Ruiz will see a team doctor Monday in Philadelphia. X-Rays on his left elbow, which was swollen after he was hit by a pitch, were negative. Romero left the game in the sixth inning with stiffness in his lower back that he blamed on his sciatic nerve. Ruiz finished the regular season hitting .302 and is a huge part of the pitching game. Romero is the team's veteran lefty, and the Phillies are facing a Reds team that features lefty sluggers Joey Votto and Jay Bruce.
-Manuel said he expected Rollins to be in the line-up for Game 1, but said he didn't know where the short stop would hit.
-John Mayberry Jr. is headed to the Arizona Fall League, so he won't be with the team this postseason.
It's a new season people. Everything that happened all summer means nothing starting Wednesday. Halladay could have a 9 run ERA and Dobbs could hit 450. Sit back, let Charlie pick his team and enjoy. Ron- Danys Baez pitching in yesterday's game was Charlies going away present to Bobby Cox.
so you write that and dont list the roster? tooltime- Charlie and Dubee hate youngsters in Phillies uniforms. Bastardo and Worley should have gotten more playing time in September. Mathieson should have been here almost all season. Bastardo is a high ceiling guy if I ever saw one. He has six strikeouts in his last 2 innings and a consistent mid 90s fastball. He has averaged well over a strikeout per inning in 2010. It would be nice if some of his supervisors would show some confidence. Instead we'll get "Flip a coin" Romero who is fully capable of throwing strikes almost 50 percent of the time. Add that to Baez and I hope nobody gets too far into the Phillies' bullpen or it will be ugly to watch. Worley IS on the roster--or at least he can be the minute they decide they need him due to injury, real or imagined. Thank God for the little things.
Dobbs and Baez should get the Adam Eaton Treatment taergehtrp
Mayberry to AFL---interesting---he is being groomed to replace Werth and platoon with Domo Brown possibly in 2011. Romus
yes i'm a little disappointed in the phils lack of reaction too. that was no accident when ruiz got hit, i guess you don't want to get anyone hurt heading into post season. but for one pitcher to take out two of our players that has to be addressed. deatheater
Regarding the post season roster...a team starts with the 25 man roster as of Aug 31st...THEN...if they have guys on the DL at the time, they can change that number of roster spots. lycralaz
Baez is worthless. everydayguy
The Phils DFA'ed Nelson Figueroa and his $400,000 salary on July 21 instead on Beaz. Figgy went to Houton and finished 7-4 (including 11 starts), ERA 3.29, WHIP 1.27. Could have been a valuable postseason arm for the Phillies. Baez, who has sucked from start to finish this year (3-4, ERA 5.48, WHIP 1.64), is useless for the postseason unless the Phils get ahead of someone by a dozen runs. Oh, but he's under contract for next year. RAJ has mostly pushed the right buttons this year, but keeping Baez over Figueroa was a howler. paolibulldog
Final roster doesn't have to be announced until Wednesday. Please, leave Baez and Dobbs off the post season roster. bgrasmeder- The post season roster has not been announced. The blogger is just saying certain guys won't be on it seeing as THEY ARE TRAVELLING TO DIFFERENT STATES FOR INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUES, HENCE, NOT IN PHILADELPHIA FOR THE NLDS. Worley would fly back if injury occurs and allows the Phillies to add a player to the NLDS roster.
What was Baez doing in that game??? Early comment nailed it, going away present to Bobby. Was there a situation where Atlanta and Padres would have had to play in to get wild card? Make 'em play and tire each other out in case Phils meet them in NLCS. Baez should be on a slow boat to China.
Does seem strange that Hudson has such pin-point control he can hit Poly and Chooch in same place....maybe just coincidence.... mad2002mad
25 man roster...Ruiz, Schneider, Howard, Utley, Rollins, Polanco, Sweeney, Valdez, Werth, Victorino, Ibanez, Brown, Francisco, Gload, Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels, Blanton, Lidge, Madson, Romero, Durbin, Bastardo, Contreras, Herndon. jaybatt79
The Vance Worely experiment looks good for the future (next year folks...next year). As of now, its the "one game at a time" mentality to concentrate on. One game at a time. Win 11 before you loose 3/7/11. Thats the only way to think right now. The only one that should be worried about the status of Vance Worley is Kyle Kendrick. Vance will end up being the #5 starter next year with Kyle back with the Iron Pigs. By the way, having a 10 game winner as the #5 starter isn't that bad. Its the inconsistancy with Kyle that will give way to Vance next season. Right now...its "one game at a time". Phight On Phillies! drhoffman
