Werth to All-Star game
OF Jayson Werth was named to NL All-Star roster to replace Mets OF Carlos Beltran who is on the DL.
Werth to All-Star game
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Just got a Twitter update from the Phillies saying that Jayson Werth has been named to the National League All-Star team. I haven't received anything official yet from the team in the form of a press release, but I'm sure that will be on its way shortly.
Anyway, nobody will ever accuse Charlie Manuel of not being his players' biggest fan.
I have to admit, I snickered a little bit when somebody asked Manuel the other night if he would consider Werth for the team. I've always been a big proponent of Werth, and felt like he was a guy who needed to be on the field every day, both because of his bat and because of the way he holds down right field.
But when the All-Star teams were announced Sunday, Werth was hitting .262 with a .365 on base percentage, a .851 OPS, 16 home runs, 45 RBI, 11 stolen bases, and 54 runs scored.
Solid numbers, sure. But when compared to others around the league, not All-Star worthy.
But in the five games since the vote was announced, Werth has been on an absolute tear, going 6-for-17 with four home runs, nine RBI and five runs scored.
It is an interesting selection, and it doesn't exaclty jive with Major League Baseball's Final Vote, which featured five players who were supposedly the last five out of the game. If I'm Matt Kemp, who plays the outfield and was in the final vote, I'm not too happy right now.
But if you look at Werth's numbers, they are comparable - and in many cases better -- than the other choices Manuel had.
First, let's look at Werth versus Kemp, which each of their ranks among NL Outfielders in parantheses
Werth
OBP: .373 (9)
AVG: .268 (18)
HR: 20 (3)
RBI: 54 (T-5)
SB: 12 (T-8)
OPS: .894 (7)
Matt Kemp
OBP: .386 (6)
AVG: .319 (5)
HR: 10 (T-17)
RBI: 46 (12)
SB: 19 (4)
OPS: .875 (8)
So Werth has significantly better power numbers, as well as a higher OPS (on base percentage + slugging), while Kemp hits for a significantly higher average.
Everyone knows that Charlie Manuel loves power, so he would probably give the edge to Werth based on stats alone.
But speaking of power, here are the numbers for Arizona's Mark Reynolds, who was also in the final vote:
OBP: .347
AVG: .259
HR: 24
RBI: 62
SB: 15
OPS: .892
So Reynolds power numbers are better, and his OPS is similar, but Werth can also play all three outfield positions, while the NL roster is already loaded with power-hitting first basemen.
I can see the argument for Werth again here, based on performance alone.
Which brings us to poor Pablo Sandoval, the player who could most make a case that an injustice has been done:
OBP: .380
AVG: .328
HR: 13
RBI: 50
SB: 3
OPS: .940
He hits for much higher average, reaches base more often, has driven in a comparable amount of runs, and has a much higher OPS.
But he doesn't play for the Phillies. The moral of the story, I guess, is to the victors go the spoils.
Hey Pablo was robbed...SO what an not so. Werth hits the long one. And as we all know, chicks dig the dingers. They are having a HR contest today. Not a sprinting, throwing, or bunting derby. HR's win games. Charlie may not know how to diagram a sentence but he can pick a team. As far a Madden is concerned he just another loser. abnrgr
Poor DR. Maybe he will finally learn something about baseball. Captain Splendor
Thanks for the comparisons but you're over analyzing it. It's simply Manuel taking care of one of his own. Penant winning managers have been doing this for years - and many times in the past happened to Phils players. So if someone wants to gripe tell them to win next year's penant or shut up. terryharmon

If the Dodgers win the World Series, they can pick Kemp. Charlie looks out for his boys. Go J-Werth! smel4727
You should be embarrassed that your manager would deny a more deserving player to be an All Star. Maddon didn't pick Carlos Pena to be an All Star, even though he leads the AL in homeruns and plays for his team. But Manuel picks the less deserving Howard and Werth. So even though Sandoval isn't an outfielder, Manuel should have left Howard off the team for the more deserving Sandoval. Howard is the third BACKUP first baseman. Sandoval could have backed up catcher, 1st and 3rd. It is a shame, and Phillies fans will be embarrased when Werth strikes out twice at the All Star game. Pablo_Was_Robbed!
yes pablo, we're very embarrassed to have a guy with 20 HR's and 55 RBI's at the break. It's terrible. We're also embarrassed to be the world champions and have the exact same amount of losses as the giants. I lose sleep every night over how embarrassed I am. KMG
Paplo, you're just upset because the last tiem the Giants won anything they were still playing in NY. I'll grant you that Pablo is a geat palyer (have him on Fantasy) but let's get real, in his first season as a full time starter, look at what Werth brings. No to mention that he's replacing an injured OF. Can pablo catch a fly ball? then sit down, wait for an earthquake, and watch the game in peace fan_in_jerusalem
Right, I'm sure they were all clean while on the Phillies. By the way, 3 more strikeouts for "All Star" Jayson Werth tonight. Sandoval has two more hits, including another homerun to raise his average to .334 and his slugging to .583. What a joke. Werth and Philly fans should be embarrassed. Pablo_Was_Robbed!
pablo- one other thing- in one of your earlier posts you referenced an article that said nine former Phillies were mentioned on the Mitchell Report. I checked out the link you provided; what you failed to mention was the report links eight of the nine guys to steroid use WHILE THEY WERE PLAYING FOR OTHER TEAMS. The one guy the report did say used steroids while with the Phillies was David Bell. You know what team he was on before he joined the Phillies? The giants. You know who was on the giants at that time? barry bonds. Don't let the facts get in the way of your argument, son. KMG- Relax Heller. Whe have to rally the troops against these Giants fans who are invading our territory the same way those fools from Tampa did during the World Series last year. Remember? EL Zorro
Comment removed.- Who is comparing Werth to Clemente or Mays, you tool? You ask me to mention 5-tool players who had 74 strikeouts by midseason. And I came with a bunch. How about Alex Rodriguez? And I never said Werth was a 5-tool player. I said boderline 5-tool player. Keep laughing with your friends and learn a little. EL Zorro
HAHAHA! I missed it Mays! You're right, Werth does bring Mays to mind! Wow Zorro, you're a real fan. You've got your Philly blinders on for sure. Pablo_Was_Robbed!
HAHAHAHA! That was great Zorro. Give me more. Me and my friends are all laughing right now. You just compared Werth to Clemente, Winfield, Beltran, Wright, Bonds, and Griffey. Come one, give me more. You do a great job of making your point. It isn't even worth the time contradicting you. Wait, does Werth also remind you of Mantle? Hahahahah! You're great Zorro, keep it up! Pablo_Was_Robbed!- I also can mention Bobby Bonds, one of the original 5-tool players with Mays and Clemente. He established a record with 189 Ks. How about Eric Davis and perhaps this generation ultimate 5-tooler, Ken Kriffey Jr. Check their stats. There is an easy link in this site. EL Zorro
pablo- if you don't recognize that barry bonds and his head that grew eight sizes once he got on the juice aren't the poster boy for the steroids era, you're delusional. as for the over/under numbers for howard/werth, the only one that matters to me is two- that's two world series rings. KMG- Dave Winfield and Roberto Clemente were 5 tool player and both had 100 strikeout seasons. David Wright is considered a 5 tool player and has 4 season in a row with more than 100 K’s and this year he on his way to another 100 Ks. As a matter of fact he has 85, more that Werth. Beltran is also considered one of today’s 5 tool players and he has also a few 100 Ks seasons. 5 tools had nothing to do with Ks. There are; speed, defense, arm, and hitting both for power and average. EL Zorro
You're crazy zorro. Pablo was moved because we already have a catcher, Bengie Molina. He's still caught games this season, and has done an outstanding job at third base and first base. You're right, Werth can do everything except hit for average (.264 career average), run (sorry, 10 steals is hardly elite and his career high is 20), hit for power (his career high is 24 homeruns, even at hitter friendly Citizens Park. And his career slugging percentage of .463 is a not a power hitter's slugging, plus he has all of 14 doubles this year). You're crazy if you think he's a 5 tool player. He's 30 years old, he isn't still developing. And how many 5 tool players have 74 strikeouts halfway through the year? Pablo_Was_Robbed!- Pablo, Werth a one dimensional in offense? What drugs are you taking? The guy is a borderline 5-tool player. He needs to improve his BA. He is also probably the best right fielder in the NL right now, who can also play a good CF and obviously LF. His defense is something that's been overlooked here. Also, he is putting pretty good numbers even though Charlie has been moving him all over the line up. He was on a pace to have 30-30 season before the Ibañez injury, which forced Charlie to put him at the 5 spot, where he doesn't have many chances to run. I see that Sandoval was moved from catcher to play the infield corner positions because of his body (5-11 and 245 lbs.). I see DH written all over him in a few years. He already looks like a shorter version of Matt Stairs. EL Zorro
pablo, are you comparing phillies losers\hangers on in the mitchell report to bonds? 2008 phils have been the cleanest championship team in 30 years. everything giants did in bonds era is tainted. maybe you should apply for job at tmz.... PosterChild

the correct word is JIBE, not JIVE. ...it doesn't exactly JIBE with mlb's final vote. Dead Fan Walking
Really KMG? Mr Steroid? How about the 9 former Phillies named in the Mitchell report? http://philadelphia.about.com/b/2007/12/13/six-former-philadelphia-phillies-named-in-baseball-steroid-report.htm What's the over/under on Howard+Werth stikeouts in the game? 3.5? I'll take the over. Pablo_Was_Robbed!
pablo- way too much energy spent arguing over a bench player for an exhibition game, dude. win the title and your manager can name mr steroid barry bonds as a reserve for all i care. all i know is my team won its first title in 28 years; i enjoyed the parade, i enjoyed the championship video, i enjoyed watching them get the ring, i enjoyed them going to the white house and i am going to enjoy it when cholly is introduced as the manager of the World Champion Philadelphia Phillies. KMG
Pablo, your rationalizations are laughable! (Maybe Pablum Sandoval can be the batboy.) jman
Poor Pablo... When the Giants win, then you can have 8 all-star position players if you want to. Were you born yesterday? Stats are NEVER the deciding factor in all-star games. The fan's picks are a popularity contest, and the manager picks are at his discretion, with some thought always to "righting past wrongs". Stop your whining, and get up to speed! jman
Manny just tied Micky Mantle for 15th on the all time homer list...I just threw up some shiner bock in my mouth...its sucks..at least if it was yuengling, i could enjoy it twice TX Phanatic
if the giants ever make the playoffs maybe your buddy will get more recognition next yr... he's talented, i like him... but needs to build up cache... i love the giants pitching... great staff EndTheDrought
Pablo, my man ... To the victor go the spoils. GoPhilsGo
Mets lose again... they are just awful! Love it! EndTheDrought
Werth is also on pace for 150 srikeouts, which philly fans might not notice since Howard is on pace for 200! And Werth is on pace for just 28 doubles! Sandoval has 24 doubles already. Werth is 1 dimensional on offense. Sandoval's bating average is 60 points higher than Werth's and 75 points higher than Howard's! How can you defend them?? Pablo_Was_Robbed!- Hey Murph- It's jibe, not "jive" You can look it up
Pablo come on buddy... Weth is on pace for 40HR and 110 RBI... those are all star numbers... and relax with Howard... the guy is former ROY, MVP and was essential in Phils going to WS and winning last yr... thats what happens when you have credentials... you get special attention and treatment... and its not like howard's #s arent all star caliber... 21 HR and 65 RBs... relax when the fat little panda earns it by performing for more than a half season he will get consideration... World Champs get priority! Better luck next yr! EndTheDrought
And Howard is a third BACKUP 1st baseman by the way. The AL only has two. Sandoval can play 1st, 3rd, and catcher, so wouldn't he be more useful? Plus he's having a better year. Pablo_Was_Robbed!
Maybe he needed the outfielder because he took a third 1st baseman that he didn't need. Ryan Howard! The guy has a lower average, slugging percentage, and on base percentage than Sandoval. Plus, he's struck out more than twice as many times! If Sandoval isn't more deserving than Werth, do you really believe he's less deserving than Howard? Again, the Giants have a better record (whether or not they've played two games more, even if the Phillies won their next two they would only tie the Giants), so wouldn't 4 picks have been enough for the Phillies? Neither Howard or Werth are particularly deserving. It's a shame. Pablo_Was_Robbed!
And again, that winning % don't mean anything because the season can't end till we finish all of our games...So even if it were to end right now, we would still need to play those two out..and we ain't losing those two... MFPhils
Pablo is right...that comment is only that the highest voter getter in outfield that wasnt originally a starter will now be a starter. However, he's wrong in saying that Pablo should have been picked. Charlie needed a an OF with Beltran out, and Ibanez coming off an injury....Werth is playing hotter than Kemp right now, and more importantly, Charlie will naturally have more confidence in his own player. Expecting Charlie to pick Pablo, a player he didn't need, just cause he was hot pre-july is a huge mistake. Sorry that you're let down but use your common sense....and the w/l record means squat..and saying that you're only in second because L.A. is the best team doesnt fly either, you still aren't good enough to be in 1st...we are MFPhils
IT'S SO FUNNY TO SEE GIANTS FANS ON THIS BOARD AND ELSEWHERE WHINING AND POUTING ABOUT WERTH BEING CHOSED OVER sandoval. "It's not fair!" they say. "Manuel is an idiot!" they whine. HA HA! To the victors (Manuel & the Phillies) go the all-star spoils. If and when the Giants ever win again, then you'll have your chance. Until then, take your childish crying elsewhere! jman
Charlie has moved to the head of the class. He has earned my vote for the rest of his tender. R-E-S-P-E-C-T. wiseoldowl
Do you really not understand Philly? Beltran is being replaced in the starting lineup by Hawpe. Manuel is free to add whoever he wants to the roster, he just can't choose the replacement starter. The replacement starter is the next highest non starter on the players' ballot, in this case Hawpe. All I'm saying is, Manuel was free to choose anyone for the roster, just not for the starting lineup. When you say he had to choose Werth, either you're trying not to understand, or you are a little slow. Pablo_Was_Robbed!

well pablo, if ya love SFO so much...join sanfran.com or something n F off the philly site...regardless, Werth is in, Sandoval is not, so PEACE Will.i.Am
Hahaha! I'm dumb? here's the article. All it says is that Beltran will be replaced by Hawpe as a starter. It says nothing about who takes the roster spot: According to MLB, any injured starter will be replaced by the top vote-getter on the player ballot who's not a starter. The Rockies' Brad Hawpe received 394 votes, more than the D-backs' Justin Upton's 277 and the 156 received by the Astros' Hunter Pence. http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090710&content_id=5802614&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb Pablo_Was_Robbed!
pablo, MLB rule, read into it....the next OF in line as far as votes will take the place of an injured player selected ( Beltran) Charlie Manuel had NO decision in it, it is the MLB rule, and the fact Werth has the votes. SHUT IT. Will.i.Am

There is no rule that says Manuel has to take the player with the next highest votes, or even another outfielder. You are either lying or just wrong. Also, the Giants have a higher winning percentage, not just more wins than the Phillies. I mentioned this before because the Phills get 5 All Stars and the Gaints get 2. So the Giants have the second best winnings percentage in the NL but only have 2 All Stars, and the Phills perform below expectations but have 5 All Stars? Maybe Howard can be justified because of his past performance, but not Werth, a career .264 hitter, batting .268 this year, and with 74 Ks already. He is not an All Star. Pablo_Was_Robbed!

Werth deserves to play OF in the ASG, Sandoval got scrwed, oh well...but guess what? He plays 3rd...and Werth was the next in line vote-wise in the OF position to take the injured Beltran's spot. Not even Cholly's choice. It is what it is. Will.i.Am
Congrats to Werth. Sorry, DR, but you cant hold this grudge forever, and ESPECIALLY, "Bye-bye Mr American Pie...Chris Coste", Thanks and all the best to you and the Coasters. Hope you rejoin us as a skipper in the system someday. mick314

Stop whining Pablo. Of course its nepotism. Thats what happens when you win the WS and get to coach the All Star team. You get to pick your own players. GET OVER IT!. It happens every single year, everyone knows that. How many years have we seen the all star roster loaded with Yankees and Boston and Mets players when there were more deserving players. Every year players get snubbed. Its not a fair voting system obviously especially when you can vote as many times as you want and especially when people like Josh Hamilton who has only played in what 30 games or so and can still start the ASG which is freakin joke but unfortunately theres no scientific way to have a fair voting system unless you give veto power to some of the managers or people running the league. When Hamilton gets to start then the veto should be put into effect. I also think there should be criteria to earn your way into the ASG. I think a player should be required to have played a certain # of games to be eligible to play in the game which would take Hamilton off the ballot and take care of all the losers in LA who voted for that cheater to play in the game also. But the point is There are perks to winning the WS and this is one of them and all the other teams have done it so just get over it. philliekev04- Thanks for posting your list, Beagle. I don't agree with all your choices, but I can respect that you took the time to put it together. Zherog
Hey Pablo wake up and join all of us here in the real world. Of course its nepotism. Thats what happens when you win the world series and you manage the all star team. GET OVER IT! philliekev04
Comment removed.- Great that JW is an All-Star, but it should have gone to Sandoval
So ridiculous. Pablo doesn't make the team but Werth and Howard do? This is nothing but nepotism. The Giants have a better record, and Pablo has better numbers than both of these guys. Charlie Manuel and Philly fans should be embarrassed. Pablo_Was_Robbed!- Ok, Amaro and Manuel decided to keep Coste as the backup over Paulino, who we got from the Pirates for young Jason Jaramillo, then traded the 28 year-old Paulino for Taschner, who was a major disappointment. After demoting Taschner, he cleared waivers and is with the Pigs. Now they decided to put Coste on waivers and eventually lost him without getting anything in return. In the meantime, both Paulino and Jaramillo are getting good playing time with their respective teams. Does this make sense to any of you guys? EL Zorro

Beagle, I agree that you are entitled to your opinion and it may be partially valid in some ways. However you are wrong about one thing- Jayson Werth IS an All-Star! bryneb- Just an opinon, not fact....... beagle29
Coste was just picked up off waivers by the AStros. J.H.S.
Beagle you're flat out wrong. John_Galt- Missed my point, my point was that Charlie is over the top in love with Werth as a player and has been since the day he arrived. Wasn't that long ago that Charlie was playing Werth over Shane when Rowand was still here. And I only came up with 5 OF who should go ahead of Werth, Pierre, Kemp, Lee, Ross and Dunn, the rest are nonOF starting with Sandoval and Reynolds, then possibly Helton, Guzman, Felipe Lopez, even Chipper Jones....not hating, just saying. beagle29
Wow -when was the last time a city's whole starting OF made the All-Star team? ChuckB
While I don't really think Werth is an all-star, every year the manager picks his own players and there is complaining. Finally it's out turn to have our manager selecting our players! ericg610- Charlie also needs to get K-Rod up in the bullpen 6 or 7 times like Lidge had to last year! burholme

Charlie has every right to reward his own. That said, let's remember that Charlie also has a legit stake in who wins this game. I have to believe his bottom line is the win and home field advantage. Then again, if your the Phillies, who needs home field. tommy2t3
Taking Werth over Kemp, who was, in fact, in the final 5 vote-in process and plays the outfield just doesn't sit well with me. benw
I just got the email from phillies.com and I am very excited. Charlie is coaching the team and every other All Star coach has picked a lot of his own players. And Jayson has been just amazing lately. I was at the 22-1 game and right before his at bat in the 8th with bases loaded, I said to my friend "Wouldn't it be hilarious if Jayson hit a grand slam right now?" and what did he do? I'm sure players like Kemp and Reynolds are deserving too and I'm sure if Charlie didn't have the kind of guys he has, he would pick them. But the truth his, Charlie gets to pick and he's got a clubhouse full of GREAT ballplayers. So now the outfield will be all Phillies, first time that's happened to a team since the 1995 Cleveland Indians. The NL has to win now. How exciting. Congrats, Jayson. You are definitely WERTH it! bd1979
hey...just win the NL and you can pick your own guys next year...good choice Chollie....you earned the right ...pick anyone you want! LongtimeFan3

Coste has gone bye-bye CrayzeeGuy- Beagles are my favorite dog breed, actually. They're loyal, curious, and intelligent. Oh, and they're darn cute, too. :) I'm just not much of a fan of hyperbole, that's all. You can certainly argue that there's more deserving people, starting with Sandoval. If you're willing to including pitchers, I don't think it'd be that hard to find six players, total, more worthy. I just took issue with the claim that there's six outfielders more worthy. That's all. Zherog

Sandoval deserves it more than worth, but to those in SF who have a real problem with it, then go win the World Series. If you want to guaranty a beachfront view, you've got to buy beachfront property. Clearly Ambiguous
I LOVE IT!!! Beagle just got punked down like the dog that he is...LOL Jamerock- I agree it's a toss up, ETD. But I'll still spot him Kemp, and I don't think he'll get to six total outfielders that would be a clear better choice. Zherog

Hey, one of the perks for winning the World Series is the manager can pick his own players if he wants. It happens every year. So, I have no problem with it. PhightinPhil- http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090710&content_id=5802614&vkey=news_mlb&fext=.jsp&c_id=mlb BJG83
- Beagle: name this half-dozen outfielders, please? I'll even start you off by spotting you Kemp from the Dodgers. So, five more legit names. Go for it. Zherog
I love it!! I guess this cements the fact that Werth is an evceeryday player for those who doubted him... Beagle who are the other 6 OF who you woul dtake over him? and teh 12 other players? I'm sure there are a few but that may be more deserving, but i highly doubt that many... and to say Werth is not worthy of all star status... they guy is an excellent OF with a great, accurate arm... he steals bases... oh and by the way he's on pace for 40 HR and 100 RBI EndTheDrought
You can never fault a manager for picking/rewarding his own guys...good job Charlie :) Let's hope the NL wins it this year! tralala- At least a half dozen other OF more worthy (werthy?) and if you add in non-OF, make it at least a dozen others. Charlie's unconditional love for Jayson Werth shows through yet again. Is Werth a good player to have on your team? Absolutely. All-Star? Nope. beagle29
- Sweet!!!!
