Werth named NL Player of the Week

POSTED: Monday, May 10, 2010, 3:44 PM

Phillies rightfielder Jayson Werth was named the National League Player of the Week.

Werth led the National League with four home runs and 25 total bases last week. His four doubles were good for second and his nine RBI tied for second. Among the four homers was the 100th of his career, coming Sunday against Atlanta.

He hit .360 (9-25) on the week with a 1.000 slugging percentage and a .407 on-base percentage.

Werth has now reached base safely in 30 of his 31 games this year and is third in the NL with a .349 batting average. His 16 doubles lead the majors.

This is his second career player of the week award. He also won for Aug. 17-23, 2009.

Murph....please do some polling data on what fans would contribute or pay extra for next season and beyond to keep Werth a Phillie. This guy is every bit as important as Howard and Utley and the "window" staying open includes Werth's continued tenure in Philadelphia.

ummm... somebody neglected to check Andre Ethier's numbers. I've always liked Werth, but he shouldn't be player of the week this week.

everyone will love to keep him. Let's say the Phils raise ticket prices, many of those same fans will complain.

    Andre Either's numbers for the week: 10-22, 2 2B, HR, 6 RBI, 4 R, BB, HP. Werth's numbers 9-25, 4 2B, 4 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, SB, BB, HP. I'd take Werth!

If the NL MVP voting were held today, Jason Werth would win hands down. Player of the Week awards are nice, but what Werth has done over the past few weeks is deserving of much more. The Phils aren't the most expensive ticket in the majors, but the majority of Phillie fans would pay more to watch the Phils take the field every year as perennial contenders. Also, many Phillie players would probably rework their contracts and defer small parts of their salaries to keep Werth on the team. The Phillies can keep Werth on the team for many years to come if they so desire. The Phils can increase prices to make more money and increase their budget, and/or defer a few players' salaries to free up some extra money for the next few seasons. A lot of money will be coming off the books over the next few years as the contracts of a few players with high salaries expire. There are ways to keep the likes of Werth, just as there were ways to keep the likes of Cliff Lee. Phillie management would have to be penny-wise and pound-foolish to let Werth get away.

He's on pace for 84 doubles 37 HR and 137 RBI. And only 152 Ks. More likely he'll hit over 84 doubles than under 152 Ks. His RBI numbers may come back to earth once Howard gets his back on pace.

And Ethier has to be the MVP right now - he's winning the Triple Crown. No way someone does that and doesn't get MVP, unless his team wins like 20 games all year. Dodgers aren't that bad.

David Loucks: I think you are slightly misinformed. The player of the week is from Mon-Sun. So between that time last week, Either had 1 HR and 6 rbis compared to Werth's 4 hrs and 9 rbis. You do the math.

I would rather pay $20 into a pool to directly increase Werth's contract amount than pay higher ticket prices where we don't know where the money is going (probably the pockets of Montgomery, Giles, Middleton, et al.)...I think many fans would agree with my sentiment

As much as I would LOVE to keep him batting fifth and a staple in the outfield....his future will be in the hands of his agent. He can make big bucks (and playoff runs!) here....or he can find HUGE dollars elsewhere.

Onthebucks is right on the money. They let Lee get away, big mistake to let Werth follow him out the door. The guy is a stud and balances out Phils LH lineup perfectly in power #5 slot. Brown will be ready to replace Ibanez in 2012 for a lot less $. Find a way to get it done!

BJG83...I think you're on to something. I'd throw $20 into your pool to keep Werth. Assuming he'll get $17m/yr, we'll only need 850k other die-hard Werth fans to agree to do the same....and we'll have paid his 2011 salary. Beyond that, The Phillies need to pay him the remaining 4 years.....but Ibanez's salary will be off the books. Anyone else game?

There is no way this guy will sign in season. He wants to have a bidding war. He could come out of it making almost 20 mil a year. Phillies just aren't going to pay that amount.

Think about it. Holliday got 7 years, $120M. Werth and Holliday have similar power numbers over their careers, but Holliday does beat Werth in batting average. Werth is actually almost a full year older, but is also a much better OF than Holliday in every defensive stat. Plus, Werth can play all three OF positions, where Holliday can really only play LF. Based on all this, I could see Werth getting something in the vicinity of the $17M per year that Holliday is getting.

This isn't a money thing with the Phils, it's a frame of mind. The problem here is that this is where you want your players to be when you develop them. When they get there you can't just let them go and say we've got some up and coming players (by the way other than D Brown what have you got). This guy's here, the Dude's a 5 tool guy and he plays hard to boot. Pay the man Shirley.

Everyone has talked about Utley this year as putting it together for an MVP season.....could Werth be our 3rd MVP on this team before Chase?

Keep this player. He is coming into his own and could be headed to superstar staus. I said "could be". We might rue the day later if we don't lock him up. Just do it!

wow... as I said, I like Jayson Werth, but if you think he's going to win MVP this year, you're completely nuts... even IF the voting were held today.

You people need to realize right now that Werth is gone. And not because the Phillies are cheap, and not because he's greedy. It's just the way it is. You can't have 10 palyers on your team making 15 million dollars. And you can't have half your team under huge contracts until they're in their mid-30's. That's why the Yankees didn't win the world series for 10 years. You need to replentish with younger players from time to time.

once again, this is a business. none of these ballplayers are going to "defer" money to Jason Werth. If the Phillies can afford him, they will keep him. If not, Welcome Domonic Brown!
