Werth: Phillies are on his list

POSTED: Monday, October 25, 2010, 1:29 PM

Jayson Werth, who will be a free agent after the World Series, said the Phillies will be one of the teams in consideration for his services next season and he is willing to listen to any offer the ballclub would make.

"I've obviously had the best time the last 4 years playing baseball with these guys, with these fans," the Phillies rightfielders said at a news conference this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. "The team has taken the necessary steps to create a winner. Obviously, their business is good here in Philadelphia. The fans are happy. From the economic side of the club, I would think they could sign anyone they want.

"Going forward, Philly will be one of the teams in consideration. It's a business. This is definitely not the same game I played in my grandparents' backyard as a kid. This is definitely a business."

Werth was asked if there was a scenario where he would not go through free agency, if the Phillies would make him an offer. "I'm all ears," he said. "I'm open to anything."

Werth talked about being eliminated by the Giants in the NLCS. "What just happened is so fresh and so devastating, it's hard to look past that right now, Werth said. "It was emotional, It was so unexpected. We definitely didn't see ourselves in that postion. On my drive in today, I noticed all the leaves are changing, the leaves are falling. It was the first time i noticed that. I had tunnel vision the whole time."

Werth was asked if he would conside a short-term deal to stay with the Phillies. "The economics of it, I'm not going to get in to," Werth said. "That's something we'll discuss  privately with the clubs. All that stuff will be handled. If you want to talk to Scott [Boras, his agent], I'm sure he'll talk to you about it.

"Realistically speaking, it doesn't really matter what I think right now. What matters is what happens after the World Series [when he becomes a free agent]. There's no reason to rush into this."

About playing in Philly: "It definitely was a great time playing in Philadelphia. The fans would bring signs and they were great. Hopefully, we'll get to continue that here."

Translation: Wherever I get the most money I am going. Good for him. We would all do the exact same thing.

As I recall, Roy Halladay is going to make several million less than Cliff Lee next year because he wanted to play for a winner this year. Just how much money do you really need? If you have a gigantic ego then, yes, you probably need every dollar to feel good. If not, perhaps you can get by on $12-15 million a year.

Outta here!! He is going to get Matt Holiday money, and, despite what they say, the Phils are not going to pay that. Thanks for the memories, Jayson

Sure he's going for the money and the YEARS . . remember he has never got paid ! By that i mean he's been making 2 -3 mil . then 7 mil . for the last 3 years . .while his ' peers ' have been making 12 - 18 mil . per . . and the thing is . . Werth is BETTER than his ' peers ' . . Luv to keep ya Jayson . . but he's right . . it is a business .. and the teams have made it this way . . esp . teams like the yankee's and red sox . . .

dblankj, how do you expect anybody to get by on $12-15 million a year? I know I couldn't do it, and I doubt you do either. LOL!

dblankj: How much money do you really need? How much does 125 million buy??? Depends who you ask I guess.
At any rate, not signing Werth will come back to bite the Phillies at some point. He and Chooch( who is one of the lowest paid players) are the heart and soul of this team at this point. Everyone else is in denial. If little Roy hadn't continually shook off Carlos signs, it would have been interesting to see the outcome.
If Ruben is smart, he will find a way to keep Werth.

If Howard get's 25 million, then Werth should get his due. Good luck and god bless.

I love Roy Halladay's comments today. Werth seems a little full of himself.

he wants at least 18 million/year for 4 years...i don't see the phillies going past the 15mill/year for 3 years they offered him. if "they" have the money like Mr. Amaro says then they would have signed him already. but knowing our owners they are looking at the $135million already on the books for next season and they dont want ot go over that $140 mark they try to stay around. plus we do need a bullpen

The real shame is that the Phillies do need to get younger and turn over the line-up a little. The fact the Werth is the free agent is unfortunate.

    Flash:
    Jayson Werth news:

Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Roy Halladay have stated that they will restructure their contracts to free up money to pay Jayson Werth and Werth has agreed to take less than the market price to stay here.
Utley saying that what's a few million buck that just goes to pay for more toys, was happy to chopt 3 million off his yearly haul. And upstaging him was Halladay, who said he'd pitch here next year for nothing, adding, "money only makes us miserable; this is all about the team, and the city that supported us." Howard simply said that after taking that last pitch to end the game, he should pay some of the money back. More news at 6pm
