Werth: Phillies are on his list

POSTED: Monday, October 25, 2010, 1:29 PM

Jayson Werth, who will be a free agent after the World Series, said the Phillies will be one of the teams in consideration for his services next season and he is willing to listen to any offer the ballclub would make.

"I've obviously had the best time the last 4 years playing baseball with these guys, with these fans," the Phillies rightfielders said at a news conference this afternoon at Citizens Bank Park. "The team has taken the necessary steps to create a winner. Obviously, their business is good here in Philadelphia. The fans are happy. From the economic side of the club, I would think they could sign anyone they want.

"Going forward, Philly will be one of the teams in consideration. It's a business. This is definitely not the same game I played in my grandparents' backyard as a kid. This is definitely a business."

Werth was asked if there was a scenario where he would not go through free agency, if the Phillies would make him an offer. "I'm all ears," he said. "I'm open to anything."

Werth talked about being eliminated by the Giants in the NLCS. "What just happened is so fresh and so devastating, it's hard to look past that right now, Werth said. "It was emotional, It was so unexpected. We definitely didn't see ourselves in that postion. On my drive in today, I noticed all the leaves are changing, the leaves are falling. It was the first time i noticed that. I had tunnel vision the whole time."

Werth was asked if he would conside a short-term deal to stay with the Phillies. "The economics of it, I'm not going to get in to," Werth said. "That's something we'll discuss  privately with the clubs. All that stuff will be handled. If you want to talk to Scott [Boras, his agent], I'm sure he'll talk to you about it.

"Realistically speaking, it doesn't really matter what I think right now. What matters is what happens after the World Series [when he becomes a free agent]. There's no reason to rush into this."

About playing in Philly: "It definitely was a great time playing in Philadelphia. The fans would bring signs and they were great. Hopefully, we'll get to continue that here."

I seem to remember people saying nasty things about Aaron Rowand for "going for the big money instead of playing for the Phillies", and also people who were glad to see Pat Burrell go by-by's. Guess what genius's, they went elsewhere and BEAT the Phillies. You can win baseball games outside of Philly.

I think people get too emotionally attached to players. Werth had an outstanding season LAST year and an average season this year. As much as I like him and would like to see him stay, paying him upwards of $20MM per season hurts the team in other areas, specifically, the bullpen. Even though they got decent pitching in the playoffs from the bullpen, it's a weakness that needs to be addressed. This is a team game and Werth, as good as he is, for the money he wants, hurts the team.

Jay's services garner alot of $$ in major league baseball. Other teams want him and will pay top dollar for the same reasons we want him to stay. reality is that he won't accept a deal less than 3 years b/c he won't get a big pay-day at 34. He's well within his rights to feel that way and probably deserves every penny he gets. It seems liek funny money to everyday folks like you and I, but in MLB, a 5 tool player like Werth is very valuable. His skills demand 15 million over 4-5 years in this market.

The Red Sox have no outfield -
so they will back up the brinks truck for Jayson Werth -
    The Phillies wont do that.
It didn't sound like Werth was to broken up about the prospect of leaving either -
so I think we have seen his last game as Phillie.

Pat Gillick had the philosophy that you need to change the line up every year. Rueben has the same philosophy (see 3B). Phillies will move Brown to Right Field.

It's a shame that Jayson had to sign one of the greediest agents out there today...I have a pheeling we won't be seeing him as a Phillie next year if Boras gets his way...not to mention commission!

Its a business. From an economic side the team can sign anyone it wants. So that means he will stay with the Phillies if they offer the most money. So simple. Unfortunately not as simple as hitting with runners on base. But I hope they sign him.

I'd like all these guys to go to school and find out how to look for a 'good' pitch to hit!!! Werth included. The only one excused is Polanco.

He'll go where the most money is. He'll be in a stadium with no one in it. Hear the echo Jayson? They only come out for the playoffs.
