Victorino returns; Brown stays

POSTED: Thursday, August 12, 2010, 2:49 PM
“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or the next day, but I’m not going to go on the DL,” he said. “I’ll go when they need me.”

Shane Victorino is back on the active roster. And, for the time being, Domonic Brown will remain there as well.

The Phillies obviously saw little sense in keeping Victorino at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for a third rehab start. In his first two, the center fielder went 4-for-6 with a triple and a home run. The original plan had Victorino playing again for the IronPigs tonight and then being activated tomorrow.

"Everything's good," Victorino said.

But Victorino, who missed 15 days with a strained ab muscle, told reporters he felt ready to go last night,. Victorino has had an inconsistent season at the plate -- his contact numbers are down overall -- but against lefties he is hitting .311 with a .360 on base percentage and .557 slugging percentage. Still, he is not in the lineup tonight against  tough Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Ben Francisco will start in rightfield, with Jayson Werth in center and Raul Ibanez in left.

There would appear to be a second piece of good news as well:

The Phillies have not placed Ross Gload on the disabled list, despite a groin injury that looked serious when it first occurred. A press release from the team listed Gload's status as "day-to-day."

“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or the next day, but I’m not going to go on the DL,” he said. “I’ll go when they need me.”

Because of Gload's questionable status, the Phillies have decided to keep Brown around for now. The Phillies all but said that they were planning on sending the rookie outfielder back to Triple-A once Victorino was healthy. But the Phillies were already playing with one less bench player when Gload went down. So instead of sending Brown back to the minors, they kept his left-handed bat on the bench and sent 24-year-old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo back to the IronPigs.

Will Brown head down once Gload is healthy?

"It's a possiblity, but we haven't discussed that yet because Ross got hurt last night and everything," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We look at Domonic as if he's better off playing -- it depends on how much time we can get him, how much we can play him. But at the same time we like him and I like him and he's going to play in the big leagues -- he's going to play a long time. He's not a finished product yet, but that's OK. He's going to be one of these days."

Baez is on the team because the Phils are paying him big bucks to suck. The Phils keep playing the high paid stiffs. They always have. David Bell? Adam Eaton? Baez should be cut, but they have to pay him regardless... sucks...

Relievers will make you crazy if you think too much about them. I know! The next time Baez or Romero, or Madson or Durbin for that matter, stinks up the joint, let's all try to remember that nearly every team has a few arsonists in the pen. And if some team's pen looks solid now, it probably won't in another month. So it goes in the era of monumental contracts for starters, pitch counts, specialty roles in the pen, and let's not forget the well diluted talent pool.

Seriously...why is Dobbs still a Phillie?? He's batting -.190 and can't field for anything.

Great question Bob65S. Where is Scott Eyre? We are desparate for a lefty situational releiver and Eyre would fill that need for the strech run. Don't trust Romero as only LH releiver, disaster waiting to happen. Baez big fat contract only thing keeping him here, cut your loses!!! Durbin, Madson and Lidge in for a lot of work if nothing changes in the pen.

Can't Raul play 1B? Sweeney is terrible, and with Gload out it seems like a good fit.

Manuel likes to bring players off the DL with a dramatic pinch hit, I've noticed.

Man Bastardo dominates at 3A but gives it up every time he gets up here. Perhaps they need to give him more time up here to settle in.

Dobbs needs much more playing time to hit consistently....Baez seems more logical to send down...$$$ is why he stays...not sure why, though, as it seems to add insult to injury when you get poor performance for a high price.

Nice article on Shane. Too bad very few posters recognized the article was actually about Vic. Instead of being happy they are trashing everyone else including the manager who has somehow gotten this team back into contention and to the post season 2 years in a row. Hard to keep defending Philly fans on how smart they are when they write some of the stuff I read Philly.com. Maybe the internet just brings out the dummies? Pardon the few posters who actually know what they are saying:)

Hey tards, you cant send down your only other bench infielder and stack it with outfielders. Dobbs is here for the year unless Ransom starts roiding

Don't quite get Amaro's love fest with Herndon. Matheison has a legit ML arm and is blocked by Herndon, Bastardo would be a better option as well. Is Rube too damn stubborn to admit a mistake? Would the Angels even want him back? As far as Dobbs goes, he is terrible, offers nothing to this team. Can't figure out if the FO really want to go for it this year, too many obvious question marks.

Stupid move to have only 1 LH in the bullpen--if such the case they should have sent Ramero down, but maybe the Phils got a good discount price on some CVS ""supplements"" for cross myself and pray I can throw a strike Ramero
