Victorino returns; Brown stays

POSTED: Thursday, August 12, 2010, 2:49 PM
“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or the next day, but I’m not going to go on the DL,” he said. “I’ll go when they need me.”

Shane Victorino is back on the active roster. And, for the time being, Domonic Brown will remain there as well.

The Phillies obviously saw little sense in keeping Victorino at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for a third rehab start. In his first two, the center fielder went 4-for-6 with a triple and a home run. The original plan had Victorino playing again for the IronPigs tonight and then being activated tomorrow.

"Everything's good," Victorino said.

But Victorino, who missed 15 days with a strained ab muscle, told reporters he felt ready to go last night,. Victorino has had an inconsistent season at the plate -- his contact numbers are down overall -- but against lefties he is hitting .311 with a .360 on base percentage and .557 slugging percentage. Still, he is not in the lineup tonight against  tough Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Ben Francisco will start in rightfield, with Jayson Werth in center and Raul Ibanez in left.

There would appear to be a second piece of good news as well:

The Phillies have not placed Ross Gload on the disabled list, despite a groin injury that looked serious when it first occurred. A press release from the team listed Gload's status as "day-to-day."

“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or the next day, but I’m not going to go on the DL,” he said. “I’ll go when they need me.”

Because of Gload's questionable status, the Phillies have decided to keep Brown around for now. The Phillies all but said that they were planning on sending the rookie outfielder back to Triple-A once Victorino was healthy. But the Phillies were already playing with one less bench player when Gload went down. So instead of sending Brown back to the minors, they kept his left-handed bat on the bench and sent 24-year-old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo back to the IronPigs.

Will Brown head down once Gload is healthy?

"It's a possiblity, but we haven't discussed that yet because Ross got hurt last night and everything," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We look at Domonic as if he's better off playing -- it depends on how much time we can get him, how much we can play him. But at the same time we like him and I like him and he's going to play in the big leagues -- he's going to play a long time. He's not a finished product yet, but that's OK. He's going to be one of these days."

It doesn't make sense to send Herndon back to the Angels when the season is almost over. Why, why, why? I have a hunch the Phillies will groom him as a future closer in AAA next year. He has the stuff, all he needs is the chance to prove it, and it won't happen in the bigs next year. We had two good Rule 5 players whom became pretty good integral parts of World Series teams. Remember when we got Victorino from the Dodgers in the Rule 5 draft in 2005? How about stealing 3B Dave Hollins from San Diego in 1989?

Herndon has potential, Dobbs, Baez, and JC are washed up. If they te Eaton's contract, they can eat Danny's. Dobbs is now a bigger liability than Bruntlett. Time to move on with Ransom, Batardo and the kid from Reading. In '80 they won with Moreland, Lonnie Smith, Walk and Bystom; all rookies. This is a better lineup, one thru eight and deeper starting pitching.

Everybody chill on Herndon, under Cholly and Dubee he will begin his Northeast Extention Relays next season.

I know I'm not supposed to critize St. Placido on here, but the thing that makes him less than ideal as a number two hitter is that he's just OK at getting on base. Even though his average is high, he has an on base percentage lower than Werth, Ruiz, Howard, Utley, Ibanez and Sweeney. Of course, he's not exactly an ideal middle of the order hitter either since he has a slugging pecentage below Howard, Werth, Ibanez, Victorino, Utley, Gload and Ruiz. He's a gritty player and an excellent fielder who does a lot of little things right, but anyone who thinks he's a star is just not paying attention.

Why send Brown down when Dobbs, who I love as PHILLIE, is just not getting it done as a PH...And there's no reason, whatsoever, to play Dobbs at 3rd as long as Polanco is healthy...Brown is a run producer (11 RBI's already) and until the 40-man roster comes into play, he should stay w/the big boys... The ONLY possible reason to send him to the 'Pigs is to get him about 30-40 AB's in a short amount of time, work in going with the pitch, etc...He MUST start going the opposite way to be successful w/the breaking pitches... Polanco: probably the best #2 hitter AND situational hitter in the NL; lest we not forget he's in the top 5 in BA right now! To even think he's not a star on THIS team tells me your meds. have run out...YOU probably think Rollins is a good lead-off hitter! One of the true JOKES of Charlie's brain activity... And, YES, I think the Phils win in spite of Charlie's decisions, but not so much in spite of him - They would ALL, to a man, run through a wall for Grandpa Cholly - he treats them exactly how they should be treated and keeps that clubhouse running like a FUNCTIONAL family...can't find that chemistry too often...it's one of the KEYS to this team's success... PhillyTK, you don't want Brown as a PH against situational lefties or tough RH set up men and closers. They will eat him alive. The kid needs to play everyday at AAA. I would even send him to play Winter Ball for a month or so, to get as many ABs against lefties and junkballers. Dobbs is going to stay for the duration of the regular season because they need him now as an extra infielder with Utley out and when they expand the roster he'll be safe. Now the playoffs is another story.

you guys are crazy calling for Dobbs's release...Yes, he hasn't had the best year as a pinch hitter, but ha not all the injuries this year taught you anything? Look at Gload...He pulls his groin running to second. We need as much depth as we can have right now. Depth has what has kept us in this playoff race.
