Victorino returns; Brown stays

Victorino returns; Brown stays
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Shane Victorino is back on the active roster. And, for the time being, Domonic Brown will remain there as well.
The Phillies obviously saw little sense in keeping Victorino at Triple-A Lehigh Valley for a third rehab start. In his first two, the center fielder went 4-for-6 with a triple and a home run. The original plan had Victorino playing again for the IronPigs tonight and then being activated tomorrow.
"Everything's good," Victorino said.
But Victorino, who missed 15 days with a strained ab muscle, told reporters he felt ready to go last night,. Victorino has had an inconsistent season at the plate -- his contact numbers are down overall -- but against lefties he is hitting .311 with a .360 on base percentage and .557 slugging percentage. Still, he is not in the lineup tonight against tough Dodgers lefty Clayton Kershaw. Ben Francisco will start in rightfield, with Jayson Werth in center and Raul Ibanez in left.
There would appear to be a second piece of good news as well:
The Phillies have not placed Ross Gload on the disabled list, despite a groin injury that looked serious when it first occurred. A press release from the team listed Gload's status as "day-to-day."
“I don’t know if it’s tomorrow or the next day, but I’m not going to go on the DL,” he said. “I’ll go when they need me.”
Because of Gload's questionable status, the Phillies have decided to keep Brown around for now. The Phillies all but said that they were planning on sending the rookie outfielder back to Triple-A once Victorino was healthy. But the Phillies were already playing with one less bench player when Gload went down. So instead of sending Brown back to the minors, they kept his left-handed bat on the bench and sent 24-year-old lefty reliever Antonio Bastardo back to the IronPigs.
Will Brown head down once Gload is healthy?
"It's a possiblity, but we haven't discussed that yet because Ross got hurt last night and everything," manager Charlie Manuel said. "We look at Domonic as if he's better off playing -- it depends on how much time we can get him, how much we can play him. But at the same time we like him and I like him and he's going to play in the big leagues -- he's going to play a long time. He's not a finished product yet, but that's OK. He's going to be one of these days."
- Is it too late to teach Raul to play first? J/K jpk
due to the time difference between here and philly - i'm 16 hours ahead (or 8 hours behind, but a day ahead. got it?) - i get to read these posts along with my morning coffee following a jog on the world's most beautiful beach just yonder. great entertainment. some days, they're pretty intelligent and informative. other days, like today, it seems the average IQ of phillies fans is the equivalent of dobbsy's BA. is there a pattern here? do they unshackle you guys and give you computer access only on thursdays? hoo! kiwi
wow kiwi is so desperate for attention he just sorta not name dropped but vacation dropped um dude, no one cares tremo12
I love all the fantasy wonk GM's on here that live in the moment. If they all had there way this season we would have already traded Ibanez, Madson, Lidge, Durbin, Gload, Werth, Victorino and Rollins. Why is Herndon on the roster? One word...POTENTIAL. People in the organization saw enough good stuff from him this spring to think he will be a good major league pitcher down the line. I think I trust the professionals more than the bandwagon riders that post on here. Baez has been this bad before in his career and then rebounds the next year. Let's hope that happens again. Just because a guy is hitting in AAA or AA doesn't mean he can do the same thing in the bigs. I'd rather stay with a struggling vetern (ie, Dobbs) than a rook who has no idea what he's up against. But this doesn't go well with the "what have you done for me lately crowd". Wheel
herndon is on the roster and will remain there no matter how much people here whine because he has a live arm, major league potential and cannot be taken off the roster for anything other than a legitimate DL trip without be offered back the Angels basically free of cost. Why would they do that when they believe he has the potential to be a good ML reliever? And Baez is here because he has a contract for $2.75 million next year. Ownership is NOT raising payroll---regardless of how many sellouts they have---so where are they going to get the money to pay Baez AND his replacement? Oh, yeah...whenever a fan doesn't like a player or his performance another, better and cheaper one grows on the trees in their backyards... Eilex826
brotherman1,klye and joe are bumms, this going to hirt them in the playoff. brotherman1
kiwi:that would make the average IQ of phillies fans around 190 or genius level. isn't a kiwi a bird with shriveled wings or am i confusing it with a fruit i see in the summer months? excuse me, i'm back to my beautiful beach just yonder. escapedcamden4monterey
Man...who would have thought that having 3 aces would make those other 2 games each week so unbearable to watch. Both Kendrick and Blanton look like they are throwing BP. Too bad we have to wait for the playoffs to go to a 3-man rotation. dri_as_a_bone
Philly is already done, Braves have it in the bag. Give up and go home fair weather fans danlee89- If Herndon leaves, lonewolf10 will lose his only reason for posting, and we can't have that. Wouldn't a couple of these sellouts more than pay for Baez's incompetence and Dobbs's anemic "hitting"? Doctor D
- CHOOOOOOOOOOOCH!!!!!!!
To all the dopes on this board who keep asking why Dobbs hasn't been cut already: THE PHILLIES HAVE NO OTHER BACKUP INFIELDERS! Valdez is playing 2B until Utley gets back, and Castro has already been released. When did you stop paying attention? Of course Dobbs stinks, but until Utley returns, Dobbs job is safe. (At least he has a better chance for an extra-base hit than Buntlette did last year.) jman
sanlee89, the Braves are in the bag? Apparently, you missed the memo earlier today that Chipper Jones is out for the season. Don't make statements that advertise your ignorance! jman
If Dobbs gets reassigned the Braves will pick him up and PRESTO; he will play like he did in '08 against our Phils in Sept. Polanco's elbow is ready to fall off. It is possible the Phils will be using Dobbs/Ransom at third during the playoffs. With Howard and Utley back they will platoon in the eight-hole of the batting order. garcia7
In two more weeks the Herndon issue no longer exists. Rosters expand and the Rule-5 thing is a moot-point. Besides, I predict that by this time next year Herndon will be in the SR replacing either Kendrick and/or Blanton who will be traded for a left hander. garcia7
