Victorino files complaint
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Shane Victorino said he doesn't want to press charges, but he wants the right guy apprehended and held responsible for the beer-throwing incident that marred the Phillies' 12-5 win over the Cubs Wednesday night.
Victorino has filed a simple battery complaint with the Chicago Police Department, a Chicago Police News Affairs Division spokesman confirmed. The spokesman said the incident was being investigated. The filingwas first reported by the Associated Press.
The centerfielder was catching a fly ball near the outfield wall in the fifth inning Wednesday when a fan threw a cup of beer, hitting him in the face and dousing him with alcohol. Security guards ejected a fan, but reports later said that they nabbed the wrong man.
"Right now, they've got the wrong guy, so hopefully they'll go and get the right guy," he said. "He's probably at home thinking to himself, oh I got away with this."
For the most part, Victorino laughed off the incident. Cubs general manager Jim Hendry apologized to him in person Wednesday night, and team chairman Crane Kenney apologized in person prior to the start of Thursday's series finale. But Victorino, who said he smelled like beer for the rest of the game Wednesday, said he wants the offender to be caught.
"I hope he gets to understanding that you can't do stuff like that," he said. "If it happens on the streets, I don't think he'd be walking too far with something like that happening in the streets. It's just not something that you do. The big picture is this guy should be held accountable."
- Aside from being a "no-class" thing to do, who throws away beer when its $6.25 a cup? What a chump. gho_matt
Better yet, this is a perfect example why "SARGE" should not do post game interviews...did ask victorino what kind of beer it was... SteveJeltz1997- Any way you look at it, that was a punk move. Like Shane said, "on the street", he would have had somebody's foot up his U know What!! In South Philly you could get killed for spilling beer
sarge admitted he is a cub more than a phillie so lets get rid of him... the chicago cops couldnt find the right guy? its on tape you idiots! Its Chicago, go figure. maximus
wish the fan fell over the fence on to the field doing that, that wouldve been epic, and hilarious ! Will.i.Am
They showed the punk on TV (after the threw out the wrong guy). I hope they arrest him, just to knock the smirk off his face. 76er
I dont now wath that fan was thinking, soon they wont sell beer at anay games and to throw a beer that is $7.00. he must have alot of money but they should let him back to any games. colon1951
Today's game, Vic was good again as was the steal of the year, Cliff Lee.Why even Ryan hit a HR. And props to Feliz who is having a very solid year. But, Bako ? Well, is there a catcher in the system that might be up in Sept>?? KGKoons- On the replay you could see it was an impulse move by the fan. He didn't think about it, he just did a drunken stupid thing. Sometimes somebody gets a beer bath, sometimes somebody gets seriously hurt.
"But, Bako ? Well, is there a catcher in the system that might be up in Sept>??" His name was Lou Marson and he was traded for Cliff Lee ser122
I didn't see it, but I imagine it mustve been a good, accurate throw to actualey hit Shane with a beer from the bleachers CaptainCrunch
Guys...It was not a beer. It had to be a wine cooler, mimosa or maybe a rasberry martini with extra rasberries. The fruit clearly isn't a beer drinking. Besides the players, who wears wristbands to a game anyways? Give him early nod for toolbag of the year. oakie- Good, catch the right idiot along with the punks who think it's a good idea to shine a laser in a player's eyes. drog
