Victorino suspended three games; Giants fined

POSTED: Monday, August 8, 2011, 6:07 PM

Shane Victorino was the only player suspended by Major League Baseball as a result of the bench-clearing scrum between the two-teams on Friday night.

Victorino was suspended three games, but will appeal. It is possible that suspension can be reduced.

Third baseman Placido Polanco and catcher Eli Whiteside were both fined, as was Ramon Ramirez, the pitcher who hit Victorino with a pitch.

No Giants were suspended.

Victorino was suspended for making contact with an umpire. Big mistake!

Whiteside gets no suspension for tackling Polanco for no reason and setting off the whole mess and Victorino never even charged the mound and gets 3 games? That is absolutely ridiculous.

Vic got the suspension because he prolonged the brawl by breaking free and diving back into the pile. I'm a die-hard Phillies fan, but if he had just jawed with Ramirez and Whiteside he wouldn't have been suspended. It would have been fines all around. However, three games is too much with no other suspensions.

uh-oh, Pirates have a 5 run lead in San Fran. Pittsburgh better not try to steal any bases or perform any other competitive baseball related activities. Giants Mercy Rule in effect.

Victorino was proactive, he pushed an umpire, and he tackled a coach. Whiteside was reactive, protecting his pitcher. This doesn't take a genius to figure out, even a Phillies fan should be able to handle it.

Sideshow stuff, never liked this aspect of baseball. I need a shower after all the punk garbage coming from playing the Giants.

I think it was pretty evident that Whiteside was lloking for a fight, the way he came out of his stance. If MLB doesn't recognize that, then so be it. Go ahead Shane, take your medicine, let Mayberry get some AB's and hold the fort for a few days, and come back strong and fresh.

Umpire Paul Schrieber was not suspended for putting a hand on Detroit’s Magglio Ordonez. So why is the rules different for umpires? Really what Shane did was wrong and should be punish but hey is should be the same all away around.
