Victorino suspended three games; Giants fined

POSTED: Monday, August 8, 2011, 6:07 PM

Shane Victorino was the only player suspended by Major League Baseball as a result of the bench-clearing scrum between the two-teams on Friday night.

Victorino was suspended three games, but will appeal. It is possible that suspension can be reduced.

Third baseman Placido Polanco and catcher Eli Whiteside were both fined, as was Ramon Ramirez, the pitcher who hit Victorino with a pitch.

No Giants were suspended.

That's what I thought Victorino would get. But Whiteside's UFC moves really escalated everything. I would have thought he would get the same as Shane. And the pitcher should have gotten 5 games.

No suspension for the SF pitcher? That's terrible. What's the lesson from all of this? Next time, if SF starts a beanball war then have our pitchers plunk their hitters. MLB has set the precedent- no punishment for the pitchers.

Wouldn’t the MLB be so much better off with out that POS Bud Selig!

I think the SF pitcher should have gotten the same punishment Victorino got. I wasn't impressed by the Giants in this series at all; Matt Cain and Tim Lincecum brought their A game, but their team in general seemed to be sleepwalking.

Victorino might have gotten a simple fine just like Ramirez had he not repeatedly tried to re-enter the fray, pushing away an official in the process. I think that's where the suspension comes in.

Pushing the ump is what got him the fine, otherwise he would have just gotten fined...

Whiteside conducted a middle linebacker tackle on Polanco. I just dont get this decision.

I can't believe that punk pitcher Ramirez didn't get suspended. He started the whole thing.

Not fair... SF pitcher & catcher should receive the same 'punishment'.

Don't forget about Sandoval throwing a punch (then running away) at Victorino after he tackled the Giants hitting coach. I guess you can't penalize a punch that doesn't land???

Ramirez starts the whole thing , and goes without suspension. MLB is a joke.
