Victorino suspended three games; Giants fined
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Shane Victorino was the only player suspended by Major League Baseball as a result of the bench-clearing scrum between the two-teams on Friday night.
Victorino was suspended three games, but will appeal. It is possible that suspension can be reduced.
Third baseman Placido Polanco and catcher Eli Whiteside were both fined, as was Ramon Ramirez, the pitcher who hit Victorino with a pitch.
No Giants were suspended.

I agree with wesley about Shane getting the suspension for pushing off
the ump but I'll bet that Tony Bruno's non PC 'illegal alien' tweet wrapped it up for Shane. Maybe not. But- the tweet gave Bochy the perfect escape to divert any question regarding who actually called for it. ( Oh that Rollins-stealing that base when they're ahead...)
MLB's wizzard Bud will pfobably appoint a special committee to study it- just like replay. Wait for it- maybe 2 years or so? sfyunker
BOGUS! Pitcher was throw out so that means he was just an innocent bystander? Double bogus! tpizza
Having been at the game, and in good seats, there is absolutely not a shred of doubt that the Giant pitcher was THROWING AT Shane Victorino--it was no brushback or a pitch that "got away". SV was suspended for throwing the umpire out of his way, which he did. Fines all around, one game for SV since he was doing what he was supposed to do. BEMiller
Where does it say in the "rule book" that SV was doing "what he was supposed to be doing"? sonnybuoy01
There is no way that was an accident. The ump even knew it was intentional as soon as it hit Victorino he jumped up and pointed at Ramirez. Shane got suspended for touching the ump, I get that but Whiteside and Ramirez should definitely have been out a game or two as well. tommy1969
So a guy throws at you, you take 1 step towards the mound, and you miss 3 games? Retaliation will come in the post season. ACBaughman
Like someone here said, Phils need to appeal the suspension until they play Arizona....then make Victorino sit out those three games against Arizona, which is fighting the Giants for 1st place in their division. frank105
Victorino repeatedly pushed an ump. Then he gets past two guys and attacks A GIANTS COACH. Should have gotten 7 games. Gigantes#1
That fat pig Panda throws a punch at a Phillies player, and he don't get suspended? frank105
As a Giants fan, I understand Victorino's angry response to getting drilled. By contrast, Tony Bruno proved himself to be an absolute moron for labeling Bruce Bochy a coward. Boch is a class act who had nothing to do with drilling Victorino. Moreover, calling Ramon Ramirez an illegal alien cemented Bruno's status as a vulgar idiot. conniesmack- No problem at all with the Victorino suspension; he earned it by pushing the umpire.
However, not suspending the pitcher for starting the brawl, Whitesides for escalating everything with his boxing warmup, or Morbidly Obese Panda for his shenanigans is ludicrous.
The Giants handled it in an old school fashion - Rollins stole a base when up by six, and the Giants plunked a batter. Very Gibsonesque.
Now, if Victorino had been old school, he would have jogged down to first and after the game got in Rollins face and said, "If you EVER steal when we're up by six, I will kill you." southsider- First of all, stealing a base with a 6 run lead in the 6TH INNING is not out of line. The Vagiants were just pissed because they can't hit a lick. If it were the 8th or 9th inning, fine.
Second, Whiteside should be suspended for not knowing how to tackle. That was seriously lame.
Third, if the Phillies see the Va-G-women again (big IF) you'll see retaliation, don't worry... esesjay
Southsider: You are obviously a Giants fan...The Phillies don't stop playing hard until the final out is made....that's why they are the best team in baseball, and will win yet another World Championship. frank105
Joe Torre recently went on record about his concern for the escalating disrespect towards umpires - the Molina five game suspension & Vic's three game sit show a new sheriff is in town. Vic's re-entering the fracas, as well as his contact with the umpire, resulted in the penalty. It is unfair that Ramirez escaped suspension. He clearly dropped his glove & advanced towards Vic. Whiteside should be suspended just for acting like an idiot. (By the way, with Posey gone, who's his backup if he gets tossed?)
SF lucky this time (Torre & Bochy go back aways, no?) - I wonder if it will come back to bite them come the playoffs, esp. if Vic gets drilled.
