Victorino suspended three games; Giants fined
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Shane Victorino was the only player suspended by Major League Baseball as a result of the bench-clearing scrum between the two-teams on Friday night.
Victorino was suspended three games, but will appeal. It is possible that suspension can be reduced.
Third baseman Placido Polanco and catcher Eli Whiteside were both fined, as was Ramon Ramirez, the pitcher who hit Victorino with a pitch.
No Giants were suspended.

How was Whiteside not fined for initiating contact? philliesphan79- Whiteside was, in fact, fined.

Victorino deserved a suspension, but this shows that the league won't necessarily punish purpose pitches and will tolerate it when players are baited into confrontations. I think their decision encourages throwing at players. tgray83- So called purpose pitches should be in the same category as NHL head shots. Problem is, in the NHL the players will continue to take cheap shots to the head and the announcers will continue to cover for them. In baseball, pitchers will continue to throw AT players, and the annoucers, especially clowns like Rick Sutcliffe, will continue to cover for them. Starting pitchers should get 5 games for throwing at hitters, and the reliefs should get at least two, NO APPEAL!

That's an f'ing travesty! I'm shocked... The Pack Leader
I do not understand how the pitcher was not suspended too. He deliberately threw at Victorino and hit hm in the back and that is what started all of this. And he is not punished? The handling of all of this seems a bit lopsided. gusschultz

Giants catcher should have been suspended. Victorino suspension is an egregious overreaction. pedge
