Victorino expects to return Tuesday, Martinez leading off

Around 9:30 Sunday morning, two figures zig-zagged their way across the grass in right field, sliding in between a series of orange cones that had been laid out just to the left of the foul line.

One of those figures was Phillies athletic trainer Scott Sheridan. The other was Shane Victorino, who left the previous night's victory over the Houston Astros with tightness in his calf in the fifth inning.

After the agility work, Victorino reported no problems in the calf. He said he wanted to play today. Instead, rookie Rule 5 draft pick Michael Martinez will make his major league debut by playing centerfield and batting leadoff.

Although Victorino still feels some tightness in the calf, he said the Phillies are not concerned because the sensation does not appear to originate in the muscle, which would indicate a strain, an injury that can take a lot of rest to heal. Instead, Victorino said, the problem seems to lie in a nerve.

Victorino said he expects to be in the line-up on Tuesday, when the Phillies open a three-game series against the Mets. They are off on Monday.

Good move to give Shane some rest and see what Martinez can do..Giving him some game experience early on will help in the long run..

C'mon! time for a spell check alert! It should be "... a lot of rest to heal"

Oh, no, Mr. Bill - agree with bradco - Sunday day games will see many players take a day off throughout the season; do hope, though, Shane is back on Tuesday...

JTH, spell checking won't catch that because it is a properly spelled word. You are talking about the need for proofreading.

Cold weather injury. I am sure he will be fine. Still can't figure why they didn't play Sat. afternoon instead of Sat. night. Had to switch back and forth with the Final Four.

Martinez is living a charmed life...
    Selected Rule 5...
    Makes the Opening Day roster...
    Now hitting leadoff...
    And playing CF...
    Hope he does okay.

Hey JTH, lay off of the content editing; "Daily News Staff" is just trying to recreate Murph's touch and style for HC, editing errors and all! Accept it and move on.

Martinez will try to bunt at least twice on his own, book it.

I am shocked, shocked to find that the injury was worse than originally reported. What is with all the calf injuries? The new "sports hernia"?

Good to know BennyFrank has a solid coconut, at least.

RoyO to throw 0's today...let's go for 3-0!

Now is the time to see how the kid does. I'm suprised he is not putting Mayberry out there...

Ben Francisco looks REAL SHAKEY in rightfield. Like he's unsure which way to turn and misjudging fly balls. Seems to move real slow to the ball too, not getting a good jump. Hope it's just opening season jitters.

    Shane could get Wally Pipped.

Victorino wouldn't get Wally Pipped. He'd just move back to left or right. He's far and away the Phillies' best outfielder now.
