Vance Worley on Saturday. . .And Beyond?

Neither Charlie Manuel nor Rich Dubee was ready to name Vance Worley the team's starter against Seattle on Saturday. The Phillies could theoretically start somebody on short rest. Or they could go with the guy who has logged three straight quality starts since being sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley and will be on normal rest on Saturday.

"We'll definitely consider pitching him Saturday," Manuel said.

Barring events unforseen, expect the Phillies to remove "consider" from that sentence after tomorrow's doubleheader.

The bigger question: Could Worley remain in the rotation beyond Saturday?

If he pitches well, there would seem to be a good chance.

Because the Phillies will have to open up a roster spot for Worley, they would likely end up sending a reliever like David Herndon back down to Lehigh Valley. But baseball's roster rules stipulate that a player cannot be recalled from the minors until he has spent 10 days there, except in cases of injury. Which means either Worley or Kendrick would have to replace him in the bullpen. The Phillies have said repeatedly they want Worley pitching regularly.

The Phillies could start Worley on an extra day rest against the A's on June 24 and keep Halladay in line for an extra start before the All-Star Break:

June 14 v Fla - Hamels (5)
June 15 v Fla - Halladay (4) Kendrick (5)
June 16 v Fla - Lee (4)
June 17 a Sea - Oswalt (4)
June 18 a Sea - WORLEY
June 19 a Sea - Hamels (4)
June 20 - Off - OFF
June 21 a Stl - Halladay (5)
June 22 a Stl - Lee (5)
June 23 a Stl - Oswalt (5)
June 24 v Oak - Worley (5)
June 25 v Oak - Hamels (5)
June 26 v Oak - Halladay (4)
June 27 - Off - OFF
June 28 v Bos - Lee (5)
June 29 v Bos - Oswalt (5)
June 30 v Bos - Hamels (4)
July 1 at Tor - Halladay (4)
July 2 at Tor - Worley (7)
July 3 at Tor - Lee (4)
July 4 vs Fla - Oswalt (4)
July 5 vs Fla - Hamels (4)
July 6 vs Fla - Halladay (4)

They could also flip-flop Worley and Halladay on July 1 and 2 if they wanted to get Halladay a nice break heading into his likely All-Star Game start. That would come at the expense of Halladay making an extra start before the break.

If the Phillies kept their rotation in order through their off days, this is what it would look like:

June 14 v Fla - Hamels (5)
June 15 v Fla - Halladay (4) Kendrick (5)
June 16 v Fla - Lee (4)
June 17 a Sea - Oswalt (4)
June 18 a Sea - WORLEY
June 19 a Sea - Hamels (4)
June 20 - Off - OFF
June 21 a Stl - Halladay (5)
June 22 a Stl - Kendrick (5)
June 23 a Stl - Lee (6)
June 24 v Oak - Oswalt (6)
June 25 v Oak - Hamels (5)
June 26 v Oak - Halladay (4)
June 27 - Off - OFF
June 28 v Bos - Kendrick (5)
June 29 v Bos - Lee (5)
June 30 v Bos - Oswalt (5)
July 1 at Tor - Hamels (5)
July 2 at Tor - Halladay (5)
July 3 at Tor - Kendrick (4)
July 4 vs Fla - Lee (4)
July 5 vs Fla - Oswalt (4)
July 6 vs Fla - Hamels (4)
