Utley takes over overall NL All-Star lead

POSTED: Monday, June 15, 2009, 12:53 PM

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley has stormed past Albert Pujols to take the overall lead regardless of position in voting for the National League All-Star team, according to results announced today.

Utley now has 2,273,355 votes to Pujols' 2,158,036. Utley is pulling away from the Dogers' Orlando Hudson, who is in second place at second base with 904,648.

The Phillies' Raul Ibanez leads among outfielders with 1,897,905 votes and is third overall in his effort to make his first All-Star appearance. Milwaukee's Ryan Braun is second (1,667,029) and the Mets' Carlos Beltran is third (1,367,412). Beltran holds a slight lead over the Cubs' Alfonso Soriano (1,340,699). The Phillies' Shane Victorino (1,116,524 )has moved into fifth place, a spot ahead of suspended Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez (999,800).

Jimmy Rollins remains the leading votegetter at shortstop after taking the top spot from Florida's Hanley Ramirez last week. Rollins has 1,216,007 votes, with Ramirez at 1,128,547.

First baseman Ryan Howard remains in second place behind Pujols for the July 14 game in St. Louis.

Carlos Ruiz has moved up to fourth among catchers and Pedro Feliz is fourth among third basemen.

Charlie Manuel will manage the NL All-Stars.

Utley and Ibanez deserve their spots, but you can see how much of a joke this allstar game is with Rollins leading the shortstops. He should politely reject it if he wins.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Charlie gets to pick the extras right? Seems to me that would lock up Howard and give Victorino an outside shot...maybe.

Sounds more and more like the NL All-Star line-up is going to look like the Phils regular every day line-up. I'd still bat Rollins 6th...

Hey Martin, there is a reason that there aren't any pitchers on the list... Do some research bub. Unfortunately, the fan voting system is pretty much a popularity contest. But the fans are getting it right with Ibanez and Utley.

All-start voting is a joke. People get obsessed with names and don't bother to look at performance--kind of like the WIPtards who call 610 and clamor for the Phillies to sign Glavine, thinking they would get the Cy Young winner even though he has been a shell of himself for a couple of years.

The all star game rewards popularity, not stats. If Phillies are on the roster, it only means we have great attendance at our ball park. There were people at a game I went to voting throughout the night. Not a bad thing, just saying. If Rollins gets the invite and declines it, the fans would cry that he was a jerk who snubbed their votes. IF the people want to see him, he should go.

Charlie doesn't pick the reserves anymore, at least according to wikipedia "Until 2003, reserves and pitchers were chosen by the manager. Player voting was re-introduced in 2003 because the managers were criticized for picking players from their own team over more deserving players from other teams."

Keep on voting PHILLY PHANS! I would love to see the entire Phillies line-up in the All-Star Game. ESPN cannot ignore us if the team was able to accomplish that feat! I am sick of the Mutts and Scanks getting half the baseball highlights devoted to them. Even with the BoSoxs in town, the Phillies game got a 5 second spot and the Sewer-Rat series got a full minute. F...ESPN! They hate all Philly teams. No National love for the City of Brotherly Love.

legatus - dead on. Rollins didn't make the 2007 team, nor did he make the 2008 team as the reigning NL MVP. I'm not complaining if he wins it in 2009. With all due respect to Ryan Howard, I wouldn't be upset if he doesn't make the team due to Adrian Gonzalez - the man's having an incredible year and cannot be denied a spot.

Too bad Feliz doesn't have a couple more homeruns...he's having a great year at the plate but I can't imagine him getting in ahead of Zimmerman who has 12 HR and almost the same BA.

Utley and Ibanez look like definite starters. My gut tells me Rollins will get passed with a late anti-Rollins push. I don't think Victorino will get in and I don't think Charlie will put him in. It seems more likely to me that Charlie will chose Feliz to get in. He's hitting .317 and is solid defensively.

Charlie will have a tough time bypassing some of his players. Will he choose Howard over Adrian González or Fielder? González could be the only rep from the Padres. How about Feliz and/or Ruiz? David Wright will be the starting 3rd baseman, then you have Zimmerman and Chipper Jones, who is perennial All Star but is hitting under .300. Yadier Molina is leading the catchers, then you have McCann. Russell Martin made the team last year, but this year Ruiz is outplaying him both offensively and defensively and Soto is struggling big time in his sophomore year. Last year, there were 3 catchers (Soto, McCann, Martin), 3 third basemen (Chipper, Aramis Ramirez and Wright), 3 first basemen (Berkman, Gonzalez and Pujols), and 3 SS (H. Ramirez, C. Guzman and Tejada). So you figure Zimmerman will represent the awful Nationals and Gonzalez the Padres. With Chipper batting only .298 to Feliz .319 as we speak there is a chance both him and Ruiz could also get in. Heck, Francona selected Varitek and his .220 BA last year.

Rollins made 2 all-star teams (early 2000's I think) because there were no other good SS in the NL. This wouldn't make-up for his not making it in 2007. I could be wrong, but I don't think he had lead pipe lock all-star #s as of July 2007. He won the MVP based more on his second half and probably more so thanks to John Lannan hitting Utley.

for the first half of 2007, there was nothing that set Rollins apart from the rest of the field. 2 shortstops made it for the NL, Jose Reyes and JJ Hardy. Both were on teams who at the time had a nice lead over teams in their divisions. Don't be stupid. I know for most of you claiming this, you didn't pay attention to the season until the 2nd half when the Phillies made the run and the Mets crumbled.

Why would he give it up to Ramirez?? are kidding me? I agree that the All Star game is a joke and the fans shouldnt have complete control over who goes and who doesnt but the fact remains that this system of voting is what it is and if he happens to get voted in whether he deserves it or not he should still feel honored and play. I would never give up my spot if i got voted it. Its a priveledge to play in what is the only decent all star game in sports. The only one worth watching anyway. Every year players get slighted and many years Phillies got slighted. Usually its NY Muts, Yankees, and Boston players that dominate all the positions so now that the Phillies are doing it more power to them. Get as many playlers in there as we can. And the people voting for Manny can go to h*ll. Its one thing to vote someone in that hasnt played well but you cant even justify voting for someone that hasnt even really played this year. And you can justify voting for a cheater. Typical of LA fans. They love their cheaters and they riot and vandalize any chance they get when someone wins a championship. And they think Philly fans are bad. PLLLLLLEEEEEEASEEE

jesselivermore, you're getting real boring, son. Zorro, I agree, and he should not bypass his players. That's one of the chits for winning the WS. The manager gets to pick the bench for the All Star game. How many chances do they get.

So when Rollins comes storming back in the second half and helps lead the Phillies to another World Championship....Some of you kill me. If Hanley Ramirez was half the short stop that J-Roll is in the field, he'd be dangerous. He'd probably also be on another team. Get over yourselves!

The Phillies are the champs- the champs always get a lot of players. I say we get six- Howard, Utley, Rollins, Ibanez, Madson and Hamels (Hamels deserves the spot for the 5-0 post-season in 2008).

Probably safe to assume that Charlie will pick at least a couple from the team - one of the perks of winning the World Series. And I'd rather see Manuel pick Feliz and Ruiz. They're both having excellent seasons and compared to other NL 3rd basemen and catchers, their near the top statistically, particularly Chooch.

Ruiz and Feliz have a more realistic chance than Victorino and Madson. There is more outfield competition and rarely a setup man is added to the team. Howard's chances decreased when Prince Fielder hit a Salami yesterday to take the RBI lead with 62. Howard, in the other hand, has more HRs than Fielder (19 to 16) and more RBIs than Adrian González (51 to 43). González is struggling big time during the last two weeks and is stuck with 22 HRS.

"I don't think he had lead pipe lock all-star #s as of July 2007. He won the MVP based more on his second half and probably more so thanks to John Lannan hitting Utley." That's why we should vote for the allstars based on the beginning of 2009 PLUS the 2nd half of 2008. Since the allstar game cannot realistically occur at the end of the season after the WS, allstars should be still be judged on a full year's performance - from last year's allstar game up to this year's allstar game. With that criteria, I do believe Rollins deserves to be on the allstar team. Especially if people actually consider his #1 SS defense throughout that whole period up until today. Someone else suggested that the voting happen during the year and then vote during the World Series with the actual game played the next spring. But that doesn't seem so fair, given injuries and retiring of players that might happen in between. But anyway, it's stupid that it's based on a couple of months at the beginning of the year that mostly reward players that start out hot (unless you go by the one-year criteria as I explained - because it's not like there is a rule book that governs how we must vote).

Victorino does not deserve an All Star slot. He's having a decent season, but not All Star caliber. I'm not so sure about Howard either. Adrian Gonzalez deserves to be the backup, based on the numbers he's put up. A vote for Hamels should not be based on last year's post season. If I were an objective Charlie, I would pick Madson to join the team. If he wants three first basemen on the squad, then Howard goes too.
