Utley reportedly needs surgery
Daily News staff
Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will need surgery on his thumb and could miss 5-6 weeks, according to a report from Peter Gammons, of the MLB Network.
Utley was injured sliding into second base Monday night in Cincinnati. He returned to Philadelphia and was seen by hand specialist Dr. Randall Culp yesterday. He was to meet with Dr. Andrew Weiland in New York today for a second opinion.
The Phillies had called the injury a sprain after it occurred but had given no indication of the severity.
A team spokesman said he could not confirm or deny the report but an update is expecting later today.

Season's over. It was a nice 3 year run. crkreg

If he knew how to run bases he never would have had to dive headfirst into second. davi
They need to make a move now! I would try to trade for Akinori Iwamura from Pittsburgh. They would have to take on his salary but they gotta do something. PeteT
this is bad bad news for the heart and guts of the Phils. jwatson
I'm not typically one to throw in the hat... BUT The Phillies should consider planning for next year. Look what happened in 2006 when they traded Abreu and Co. The team wound up contending for the wild card. They can shop Werth to get something in return... EVEN IF IT'S PROSPECTS. If they can move Werth, then give Mayberry or Francisco a shot in RF. Although it'll be tough to move Ibanez's contract, RAJ should give it a shot... EVEN IF IT'S FOR PROSPECTS. Brown can then be called up to replace Ibanez. Hell, a team might even want Moyer at this point. His contract is up at the end of the year (I believe) and he can help a contending team. These moves don't necessarily mean the Phils are throwing in the towel, but I believe it would set them up VERY WELL for free agency in the winter, and then next year. PSU DEJA BLUE
Chase will return just in time for Mets series first weekend in August just like in 2007. Will be plenty rested for hopefully another postseason run... tralala
Oh well, get 'em next year. This season is over! Way too many holes to fill, and nothing to trade to fill those holes. Tazed & Confused
By the time he comes back, theyll probably be so many games back a late run wont be enough. Ohwell atleast they got us one title. xMikelaw19
Utley has been ranked in the top 3 of all baseball baserunners. Maybe if he learned how to hit, he would knock in 189 runs per year as well. tommy_the_k
I don't think this is the worst news in the world. Better now than to have this happen in late Aug or Sep. He can still get back in time for the playoff push. But Amaro does need to make a move for help. FireTMac&Wheeler!
What is a season without Adversity! If we didnt have adversity then...we would be the pirates. I think we will be ok and in a position to FIGHT for the division or wildcard. We all need to realize that we will not be handed anything and that things like this aren't going to happen to us, and that if they do that they will not end out season. Chutley26
Look, if this team can hang around until August, they are a closing team... this ain't over folks. PhilliesPhan88
PLEASE...PLEASE...PLEASE...don't move Polanco to 2nd and put Dobbs at 3rd! In fact, don't put Dobbs into the mix AT ALL! Utilize Valdez and Castro JustaTXjock
If Polanco can get back, he is a natural second baseman. Bring up Ransom, or trade for somebody. Still a step down, but better than Dobbs & Valdez. rpfoxslfox
