Utley reportedly needs surgery

POSTED: Thursday, July 1, 2010, 12:38 PM

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will need surgery on his thumb and could miss 5-6 weeks, according to a report from Peter Gammons, of the MLB Network.

Utley was injured sliding into second base Monday night in Cincinnati. He returned to Philadelphia and was seen by hand specialist Dr. Randall Culp yesterday. He was to meet with Dr. Andrew Weiland in New York today for a second opinion.

The Phillies had called the injury a sprain after it occurred but had given no indication of the severity.

A team spokesman said he could not confirm or deny the report but an update is expecting later today.

More to come ...

C'mon Ruben---bring up Harold Garcia all the way from Clearwater-A and see what he can do----be daring and risky.

After the tenacity and heart the Phillies have show the past 3 years, some of you are ready to give up hope? C'mon! It's only 6 weeks and knowing Chase it'll be 4. If Happ comes back to old form ( I know it's an if) we'll be okay. Phillies don't heat up until August anyway. Even if we don't win the division the WC is still very doable. Keep the faith!

OK,OK,OK, the season is NOT over. 5-6 weeks puts him back in early to mid August. We'll get a replacement who will then be a bat off the bench after Chase returns. Good thing you all weren't around in 1776. With your defeatest attitudes, we'd all be drinking afternoon tea. It's a speed bump on the road to the post season. RELAX!!!

Season is not over - if they took that attitude last three years they would have gotten nowhere. Stop with the negadelphia - the curse is over, let's stay behind our teams, even in times of adversity. Geesh!

For those of you who have said the season is over, please return all phillies gear, tickets, etc. that you currently own as I'm sure someone will be able to put them to good use. You are pathetic for calling yourselves "fans". Yes, Utlet is a big part of this team, but to think the season is over is just sad on your part. It's a VERY long season and I'd like to think that if the team can stay steady and keep itslef in the hunt, then once Utley is healthy and assuming the others stay that way as well, we should be poised to make a run at the end. To count out the 2 time defending NL champs due to an injury (even to Utley) just BEFORE the allstar break is sad and pathetic for you to say. We need less of you fools around here.

ha ha ha!! I have said many times this is a 2nd or 3rd place team. The braves will win the division by 6-8 games. Injuries happen to every team and as for the phils they have no depth to compensate. Thank your wizard GM Amaro for the shortsighted vision of how to construct a winning team. This bunch will be lucky to finish at 500. I remember this blog going crazy saying in the spring that Roy would win 30 games. What a joke!! He may not even win 15. He is on pace for 16 losses right now. When does football start???

5 Weeks puts him back around the 2nd week in August, ready, rested and not banged up. Could be just the thing we need, heck with moyer pitching well and Doc and Cliff Lee....oh wait we traded that guy for NOTHING. Oh well maybe Ryan will start to try to hit home runs vice singles

How long will Polanco be out-he can play 2nd in the meantime and get a 3rd baseman-bring Feliz back from the astros for a stretch

Easy...Polanco is an All Star caliber 2B. Move him there, get Feliz back to play 3B, cut Dobbs when Chase comes back. The REAL problem is the Human Earned Run (Kendrick) and Last Leg Lidge.
