Utley out of the lineup

POSTED: Tuesday, May 5, 2009, 6:00 PM

Paul Hagen reporting from St. Louis ...

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will not play tonight against the Cardinals because of a sore foot.

He was hit by a pitch Friday against the Mets.

Utley pinch-hit Saturday but returned to the starting lineup last night. The Phillies were rained out Sunday.

Manager Charlie Manuel said the move was more precautionary and that there is a chance he could play tomorrow night when the Phillies make their first trip to CitiField to face the Mets.

Utley wanted to play, but Manuel said he thought it was more important to give him some rest, although Utley is available to pinch-hit.

Miguel Cairo will start in Utley's place and bat seventh.

Also, lefthander Cole Hamels threw a bullpen session and did agility drills. The Phillies said there is no reason why he should not be able to pitch against Atlanta on Friday.

Hamels sprained an ankle last Wednesday against Washington.

Philly the Kid: Remember that Cobb played in teh days of the dead ball. Not nearly as hard, nor thrown as fast, as today's pitches. I wouldn't want to get hit with a ball thrown over 90MPH. That said, Chase is a fighter all the way willing to do anything to help this team get back to the WS.

Utley gets hit a lot because it's a huge part of his "game" to stand on top of the plate...His bat is so quick that he begs for them to throw "in" on him; the result of them doing that is: Mo' Homers AND Mo HBP's... It's pretty obvious that he LOVES "taking one" for the team whenever he gets hit...It's like a "badge" to him...He doesn't move away, but, rather, he moves into pitches and doesn't even flinch when the ball nails him... He's a throw back to the Ty Cobb-type of play, only Ty Cobb also killed a guy, if I'm not mistaken? PK

were i an eccentric billionaire (or a banker)(which you can also spell with a 'w'), i should treat all of you to brain mri's. i'd expect to find burnt-out match sticks, wire barbs, broken beer bottles, rat poop and bits of old, yellowed sports pagers (daily news, of course). not a dictionary or grammer/granma/grandmal book anywhere.

It is so annoying when Murphy and Martino report the same exact things. Why do they have both of them?

On another note, glad to read that Ankiel is up and walking around - sore, naturally, but apparently not too injured. Charlie just said Chase, as usual, balked at sitting out. I think he'll be back soon. I bet Charlie also felt this was a good opportunity to give Cairo some ABs, as well as not to risk aggravating Chase's foot.

Yeah, lern to right wright. As for Ut getting hit, somebody on that staff needs to buzz a few heinies on the other side when that happens. It's ridiculous how much he gets hit.

Yo, allrightknight, I was curious, not critical! That's the trouble with email, is you can't hear the tone of voice. And I thank everyone for satisfying my curiosity, although I preferred the comments of those who did it without a dig. You must have not only superior vocabulary than me, but also superior grammar, since I fail to see any grammar mistakes in my comment. However, I claim the better spelling! :) There, I got my own dig in. Now we're even.

I love it when someone criticizes another's grammar and spells it "grammer".

Yes 'precautionary' is a word. An adjective meaning measures taken before hand to, in this case Chase Utley's foot, secure good condition or prevent harm. Meaning the little toe that goes wee wee all the home might still be too sore to go home. Personaly I would worry more about your own grammer than someone else's usage!

Maybe Feliz can moveup in the batting order. He's been hitting pretty well this year, now that he's healthy. J-Roll needs to get on a Roll!!

They played a full ten games feeer than this time last year, due to the season starting a week later than last year, and 3 rainouts to boot. The Phils end the season with a weekend series at home against the Marlins October 2-4

Yes "precautionary" is a word. I took a look at 5/5/08 vs 5/5/09 standings, and it's amazing the Phils have played a full TEN fewer games in '09. I personally think they will end up running away with the East this year (assuming, of course, Hamels doesn't miss additional significant time), finishing at least five games ahead of the field...

Hmmm, and this could have happened when he got hit on the hip against the Nationals last week, or the Mets last Friday (Pelfrey hit him on the ankle)...and he wasnt in the line-up Saturday, which didnt make sense since they just had an off-day on the 30th. Shoot, now Ryan won't get his day off until Thursday against the Mets!

Yes it is a word. I believe it is more than the foot keeping him out, the mans been hit by like 5 pitches in like the last few games at LEAST

A precautionary (Is that really a word?) move against what? Is his foot still bothering him?
