Phillies second baseman Chase Utley will not play tonight against the Cardinals because of a sore foot.

He was hit by a pitch Friday against the Mets.

Utley pinch-hit Saturday but returned to the starting lineup last night. The Phillies were rained out Sunday.

Manager Charlie Manuel said the move was more precautionary and that there is a chance he could play tomorrow night when the Phillies make their first trip to CitiField to face the Mets.

Utley wanted to play, but Manuel said he thought it was more important to give him some rest, although Utley is available to pinch-hit.

Miguel Cairo will start in Utley's place and bat seventh.

Also, lefthander Cole Hamels threw a bullpen session and did agility drills. The Phillies said there is no reason why he should not be able to pitch against Atlanta on Friday.

Hamels sprained an ankle last Wednesday against Washington.
