Phillies second baseman Chase Utley is expected to miss at least a few days after getting hit in the head by a 91 mph sinker in the sixth inning.
Utley was lifted from the game in the bottom of eighth for what the Phillies said were precautionary reasons.
"The way to describe is that he didn't feel 100 percent after getting hit. He felt OK right afterwards and then he started feeling a little fuzzy," general manager Ruben Amaro said.
"The protocol is to wait a day or so to do an impact test, so he's going to be out a couple of days at least."
Amaro said the first determination was whether Utley should fly to Milwaukee with the team after the game. The Phillies begin a four-game series Thursday night.
"We think it's very, very mild, but we're going to be cautious with it obviously," he said. "You don't want to mess with the head … we're not going to mess with the heart and we're not going to mess with the head.
"When you get a 90-plus mile an hour fastball off your melon, you have to be cautious about it regardless of what kind of gear you're wearing. He's basically going to do nothing tomorrow."
Amaro said the Phillies also plan to activate shortstop Jimmy Rollins, although he will only be used in an emergency. The expanded rosters provide a bit of a luxury.
"I think he's going to be ready to go," Amaro said. "Physically, he's ready to go. But again, we're trying to be cautious with Jimmy. (But) we're going to activate Jimmy and have Charlie use him in emergency purposes in case he needs him. Hopefully, everyone can stay healthy and Chase will be back with us."

The Ump should have known immediately that Chase wasn't right when he asked the Ump if he got hit. Get well Chase and I like him resting a couple of games anyway. greenflyer
As long as it's nothing serious, this sounds like good news to me. He could use some rest down the stretch. And this give Charlie a reason to do so. magicmike
After a sweep of the Braves, it is a blessing in disguise to rest Utley for a few days. He needs to be rested for the playoffs, and his power numbers are off. I think if the Phillies win 2 of the 4 games in Milwaukee it would be fine. I would not have predicted that they would have swept the Braves with Lee-Worley-Oswalt pitching. Let's hope it's a mild concussion. RunningTheBases
I thought it was an automatic 7 day sit down after a concussion in MLB...... Mark1npt

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? "DID IT HIT ME?" MAYBE A CONCUSSION? HELLO, WELCOME TO THE 21ST CENTURY

What reason would O'Flaherty have to intentionally hit Utley? He was brought in specifically to get Utley and Howard out. SteveS11

The ump (Jerry Meals) didn't know if Chase got hit because he didn't know he was at a ballpark and was calling strikes as balls and visa versa.. STEVE5444
Poor Utley........Gets hit in the Helmet and has to sit a few days! Big baby! MRD
MRD you are being facetious right? You can't call Utley's toughness into question, he's the toughest guy on the team. klugs2
MRD...Are you plum loco...Utley intentionally gets hit an is usually leading or near the top of getting hit with balls...That helmet only provides some protection BigGuppie
MRD is a Mets fan. How is that going MRD? rockinrob
I say someone throw a 90+ MPH baseball at MRD's head, we'll see who cries first. road515
Shades of Wally Pipp. The Pete Orr Era begins tonight. NewMick314
Ricky Bo, who I often agree with, was talking trash on the post game saying Phils HAVE to get retribution against the Braves...He sounded idiotic. No way is the pitcher trying to hit him in the head there...McCann was on Utley with caution in his face immediately... bearsfriend
Hes been sucking anyway. This guy gets a free pass all the time. Dont know why vishman14
When the Phils have HFA locked up, bring up some kid pitchers and start paying back. shadow22
I also think Utley was intentionally hit by O'Flaherty. There were two outs. The Braves were clearly frustrated by the umpires reversing the original call on Polanco's hit. They probably knew they could get Howard out, since he was struggling at the plate last night. O'Flaherty should have been tossed. I'm glad Chase is alright. TripleOption
Hey MRD...when we want your opinion, we'll give it to you... Buck Dharma
Love to read comments from those who can't digest Phills success. Don w- There is definitely a different yardstick used to assess these injuries when applied to other positions.
How many times have we witnessed Chooch taking a foul tip off his mask, helmet, or some other vital part of his anatomy, and resulting in absolutely none of this invasive interest..? Phiggles
How bout them there Fightins!!!!Chase you will be alright on your time off how bout you take ryan howard to the eye doctor's and just have his eyes checked............Come on ryan we're behind you!!!!! chesterfield- They need to go for retribution not only for Utley but for Polanco last year. brio
Oh my God, is Chase Utley dying? PhillyCheeseSnake
