Utley among baseball's meanest, players say

POSTED: Wednesday, September 14, 2011, 7:03 PM

Chase Utley as mean?

That's what many of his fellow major leaguers say in this week's Sports Illustrated players' poll.

Utley finished second with 13 percent of the vote when 215 players were asked who is the meanest player in baseball.

White Sox catcher A.J. Pierzynski was the runaway winner with 29 percent of the vote.

Milton Bradley (11 percent), Carlos Zambrano (five percent) and former Phillies pitcher Vicente Padilla (four percent) rounded out the top 5.

Hard to imagine this goes back to his declaration about the World F. Champions in 2008. Our guess is this might be the baseball definition of "dirtiest" or it might be a reflection of Utley's hard-nosed style.

What do you think? Surprised at what other players think of Utley?

Because Utley is the TOUGHEST...gets hit on the head with fast ball and don't even rub his head, and just jogs to 1st base.

Yeah, seems pretty off base to me too. Tough?definitely. Determined? Absolutely. Mean? Can't buy it.

Looks like a cheap way to attract comments. Better reporting could help !

Sounds like a bunch of jealous haters to me. I wonder what Mr. Utley has to say about this. Maybe "World F***ing Champions, B**ch!"

Definitely not mean. He doesn't showboat, he hustles and plays hard. He plays clean too.

Utley plays the game hard. That sometimes leads to hurt feelings.

I met Chase and his wife once in the lobby of my building. They both couldn't have been more approachable and incredibly nice...

Maybe Utley makes fun of the first baseman's Mom as he heads to second on a double.

If a hard slide into second makes a player 'mean' .. then yeah, sure.

I love it, im glad opposing player don' t like him. Because he is focused on winning. You don't see him yucking it up with the first baseman every time he gets a hit or hugging guys on the other team before a game. He goes into bases hard, and will run over the catcher if he has too. He is the anti-McNabb and thats why Philly loves him. Thanks Chase, don't ever change.

This is the funniest thing I've heard all week. What a silly poll - makes the players seem like a bunch of whiners. Regardless, keep brining it Chase!!!!!
