Updated Projected Salary Chart
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
UPDATED, 3:10 p.m. -- Just to clear up some confusion, the qualifications for inclusion in this chart is somewhat subjective. In addition to the players who are guaranteed money for 2012, I included those who I think are locks to make the Opening Day roster. The two notable absences, as noted in the comments section, are Kyle Kendrick and Ben Francisco. Both players are arbitration-eligible, which means the Phillies have the choice of tendering them a contract that will be decided through the arbitration process, or non-tendering them, which would make them free agents. I think Francisco, who could earn upwards of $2 million, is likely to get non-tendered, especially if the Phillies end up signing a free agent outfielder (Michael Cuddyer is one who they have interest in). It just isn't worth paying $2 million for a fifth outfielder who, like three of the other four, hits right-handed.
Kendrick is an interesting situation because it is difficult to figure what he will make next season. He earned about $2.5 million this season and posted solid numbers, but also started just 15 games. Anything at or below $4 million and he's a good bet to return in the same role he held last year. Anything above $4 million and you have to start thinking about how much you are willing to pay for a guy who has no clear role unless somebody gets hurt.

In the story you will find in the paper and online we took a look at the payroll flexibility the Phillies still have for the rest of the offseason. Below are the player-by-player figures for the projected 25-man roster IN 2012, according to my records. Numbers with an asterisk indicate that the salary is not yet guaranteed -- it is just a projection.

Why isn't there an asterisk next to Pence's salary? He is up for arbitration this year. Phillyzeus76
I figure they go to about 175-180 so we are looking at about 27-35 or so million left.. even if Cole is extended I see base next year being the same about 15 or so... Phillies would look to back end Cole higher money when new TV diggs will kick in...
Man look good without that 20 howard will be stealing this season.. Flyers1971- I don't see Kendrick either. He is still under their control, right? $1.5 last year?
See if they can buy a WS Championship next season. It didn't work this year. taxmanndumbeth
25th guy will be about 3.5 for Kendrick. FABER
Shouldn't Mayberry be the starting LF? RAJ said it was his position to lose. And where's Francisco? Xyzzyx
Does Victorino need to go 3 decimals? mikemaddog
Plug in JJ Hardy at 7.5 million at shortstop. He is signed through 2014 at 22 million, which is a bargain. Send Brown, Galvis, and a pitcher to Baltimore for Hardy and we have an excellent shortstop with power for the next 3 years. He is only 29 years old. So we get younger without breaking the bank. I wanted he and their centerfielder, Jones, last year at the trade deadline, but Baltimore signed him to an extension. I would have even included Victorino in that deal and I value Victorino very much. miket47- I'd do that...if they get Nolan Reimold as a throw in...the pitching prospect would have to be decent...anyone but May or Biddle.
bearsfriend - That's crazy talk. JJ Hardy had a 0.310 OBP last year for all of his HR. His career has been up and down (offensively). Essentially you're willing to trade your top SS prospect, your top OF prospect (who should be given a chance to play everyday here), and some pitching for a SS who doesn't get on base? Galvis probably already has the defensive range of Hardy (if not better).
mikemaddog.....yes, Vic needs to go 3 decimals...because of his warp speed. Romus
Is it already determined that Schneider will not be back? He seems the perfect servicable cheap back-up catcher type. I have not seen ANY article about next year oor roster decisions. GNIKGNARLY
JJ Hardy matured this past year after an off season in 2010. He was probably Baltimore's most consistent player last year. He had 30 home runs and 80 RBIs in 129 games. He is not Jimmy range wise, but he makes less than 10 errors. So he is not a liabillity to the starting pitching. miket47
JJ Hardy is a joke, right?
Maybe he repeats his 2011, although not likely. More likely he reverts to his 2008-2010 form. In which case you'd be better off playing Martinez as your every day SS. Worly?
JJ HARDY WORKS FOR ME, DOM BROWN IS A BUST, HERE, AT LEAST, TOO MUCH PRESSURE DONDEN31
I think Dom should get one more chance before he's called a bust here. pigsofsunday
