A quick update on Roy Oswalt. . .

The Phillies have told the veteran righthander to take all the time he needs to help his family clean up from the devastating series of storms that swept through Mississippi earlier this week. It still isn't clear when Oswalt will return to the team, and considering what he and his wife went through, it's understandable. Nicole Oswalt had joined her husband in Arizona, where she watched him pitch against the Diamondbacks on Tuesday. The couple's kids were back in Mississippi with her parents when the massive storm system that spawned deadly tornados across the South began moving through. You can imagine what was going through their minds throughout that day and night as they scrambled back to Mississippi after Oswalt's start. Fortunately, we can tell you that everybody is accounted for. According to sources with knowledge of the situation, the kids and their grandparents rode out the storm in a tornado shelter and were unharmed. Although the house was not damaged, they suffered extensive property damage, which Oswalt is helping to clean up with his bulldozer.

Despite Joe Blanton's trip to the disabled list, the Phillies have some flexibility with regards to their rotation. Oswalt is scheduled to make his next start on Tuesday. But thanks to off days today and on Monday, Cole Hamels would be available to pitch on Tuesday with an extra day of rest. Vance Worley could then pitch on Wednesday, followed by Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee on normal rest.

The Phillies won't have a better idea of when to expect Oswalt for at least another day or two.
