The newest Phillies: Paulino

This one falls under the "No move is too minor" category.
The Phillies have acquired Ronny Paulino in exchange for catching prospect Jason Jaramillo. This really doesn't mean anything except that the Phillies were ready to move on from Jaramillo, who at one point was their top catching prospect. With the emergence of Lou Marson, Jaramillo appeared to have been pushed to the back-burner. Marson, after all, was called up in September. Jaramillo wasn't. In exchange, the Phillies receive a catcher who has played in the majors. In fact, Paulino hit .263 with 11 home runs in 457 at-bats in 2007.

Nothing new at this point as far as Mark DeRosa goes. I'll say this, though: use some common sense before reacting to some of the rumors that are out there. Example: the Steve Phillips rumor that had J.A. Happ and Jason Donald being shipped to the Cubs in return for DeRosa.
- re happ and marson.... i hope you're right. i'd hate to give up youth with potential for a good, not great, middle of their career guy.
That Phillips rumor sounds like wishful thinking on his part. Wally 24
Ok so your not taking comments? Wally 24
Dave I wouldn't move J Happ and any other prospect for a thirtysomething utility player. When the only thing you hear is the guy was quarterback at Penn tells me his baseball skills aren't worth what the Phillies would be giving up. Especially if it aids them in getting another dominant pitcher jmagee1202
This is funny news, and maybe smart move. Coste seems clearly on the way out this week, and Marston is not ready for even back up at ML level next spring. He has to improve defensively (at the hardest position in baseball age 10 +) and offensively to live up to his hype. I love the guy but all of the prospects are always expendable for major league proven talent. Love Coste, but trade him for comp guy 7 years younger, or more. He was needle in haystack, a minor Philly legend...but if we can leverage, lets do it. bigredmachinefan
I don't mind giving up a prospect that plateaued in AAA for someone that can come off the bench and call a game. Perfect for the Phillies in their current situation. As far as getting DeRosa, I would ship Coste and Kendrick, but I'm not sure I would send Happ. Especially now that Ty Wigginton is apparently on the market, along with Punto. The more of these guys that are available the better. It should bring the cost down. mdhnyc- Thanks for the laugh! Steve Phillips' rumor that had J.A. Happ and Jason Donald being shipped to the Cubs in return for DeRosa is so unrealistic that all one can do is laugh at the silliness of this proposal. Thanks Steve for the laugh!
Too bad reality has set in for Coste. Great guy who will be a Manager some day. Retention of Happ and Donald is key as both have great potential vs a major league utility guy whose apparent short term value is fill in for Utley/Feliz in April. Rubie....take the longer view please. mick314
Go with youth. We don't need any more 34 year old players. Look to Donald, Campbell to fill in vacant spots. Other teams take chances on youth and become competative. (Tampa) wiseoldowl- If I was Steve Phillips, I'd be embarrassed to bring up a trade rumor of that type. Two top prospects for a utility infielder.... dpcoz
please remember that Donald, as much as he will be a great player some day, is useless in the Phils organization unless he learns 3B very fast. We have teh best 2B in teh game ad one of the best SS's. Where do you play him? If he brings us a top pitcher, or a piece that we need to repeat, then he has served the organization just as if he hit 40+ HR and won teh MVP and Gold Glove in the same year. Name of the game is to WIN!!! jeff gross
Owl, the object isn't to be competitive, it's to repeat as WS champs. Let the fish, mets, yanks, etc be competitive while we are champs jeff gross
Trading Donald, Carrasco and or Happ or some combination for Deforest isn't going to win chamionships over time. The fact that we did win a championship and still have the core in tact, should allow us to be a little patient with our own prospects. I want to see Happ get a real chance to pitch and Donald and Marsden a chance to join that core. Sign Ibanez for left and let Donald fill in at second. SJJim

I wish Junior would show some confidence in the farm system, use donald while chase is out, and instead of trading our young pitching away for a (super utility player) put Happ in the the rotation and see what the kid can do for real. Also they need to give Kendrick another chance, all he needs is some confidence, and what about Carrasco, bring the kid up. The things we need are, some, bullpen help and a right handed bat, and I would give Pat 10 mil a year with an option for a third. People Phils won the World Series, lets act like we are the Champs, including you JUNIOR!!!! geoff02- That's why Steve Phillip is not a general manager anymore. And Jeff, I won't trade Donald unless the other team makes me an offer that I cannot refuse. And it better include an infield prospect. If you look at the Phillies minor league system there are not many infielders ready to jump to the majors if something more serious happen to Utley or Feliz, or Rollins for that matter. Remember, Utley is hurt and is not a guarantee that he is going to be 100% for the full season. I keep thinking about Bo Jackson, remember him? EL Zorro
JUST TO LET EVERYONE KNOW, THE NY METS JUST OBTAINED J.J. PUTZ TO BE THEIR SET-UP MAN. K-Rod and Putz. And we got Ronny Paulino.... gulls3012
What, we got nothing, WE JUST WON THE FREAKIN WORLD SERIES!!!!! geoff02- Maybe I am wrong, but I think getting Paulino is a first step to a more significant trade involving one of our catchers. Why trade a catching prospect (Jaramillo) for a major league catcher (Paulino) when you already have a nice catcher (Ruiz), and the catcher of the future (Marson) and a proven back up (Coste)? Paulino not only could push Coste for the back up role, he can push Ruiz for his job if Chucky starts slow like last year. Paulino has pretty good numbers for a catcher in his brief major league career, including hitting .310 as a rookie in 2006 and hitting 11 HR and knocking in 55 runs in 2007 with an awful Pirates team. This year he got hurt but threw 28% of the runners, not bad. He is currently playing in the tough Dominican Winter League, where a lot of major leaguers are playing, including tough pitchers Fausto Carmona and Francisco Liriano. He just made an All Star team that is facing the All Stars from Venezuela this weekend. He could be a sleeper here. Maybe teams are asking for Marson or Ruiz in trades and the Phillies got Paulino just in case they move one of them or maybe they could use him in a trade. Will see. EL Zorro
The New york mets just got J.J. Putz to be their setup man.... gulls3012
I just hope Amaro will not fall into the trap of trying to prove his mettle by winning a second straight pennant and WS, but destroying an already weak minor league system while he is at it. Even today, MLB in an interview apparently taped just a few hours ago, is still heralding the SD, Cubs, Phillies trade as involving Happ or Carrasco and Jason Donald. A good general manager will tweak an already good team to preserve and even enhance its quality, while building a system that will be able to replace the current players as they pass their prime. That is the only way to ensure the possibility of future parades, without the decades long periods of absolute malaise so common in the Phillies' past. DeRosa would be a very nice addition who, together with Dobbs, would give us tremendous versatility. He may even be worth Happ, but certainly not worth Carrasco and/or Donald. Amaro has to step back and take a good hard look at what he may be about to do. Don't sell the future for a fleeting present. MORGANA
1) DeRosa is NOT a "utility infielder." 2) Why has NOBODY mentioned that DeRosa could help us kill three birds with one stone? With DeRosa, not only do we have the short-term replacement for Utley, BUT we get a right-handed hitting left fielder to platoon with Dobbs OR Jenkins, and, NOW, Bruntlett is completely expendable! That being said, however, I'd like to keep both Kendrick and Happ, if possible, but Happ would have to be the keeper if one has to go - because he's a LH starter possibility... 3) I presume Paulino is a better defensive catcher than Coste? Guess we'll have to wait and see...Never under-estimate the value of good, ready for the show, "backstops" on the bench, People!! Hopefully, the playoffs gave Ruiz the confidence at the plate to push him to a great season in '09... PK PhillyTheKid
