The Stare Down
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
Roy Halladay isn't sure what got Pat Burrell upset. But he certainly heard the choice words the former Phillie and current Giant shouted his way after he struck out Burrell to end the first inning.
Burrell disagreed with the called third strike, and as he was talking to home plate umpire Jeff Nelson, Halladay stared at him while walking off the field.
Burrell took exception. According to our best lip-reading efforts, the left fielder inquired, "What the (bleep) are you looking at? What the (bleep) are you looking at, mother-(bleeper)?"
"I was looking at him, but I don't know if that initiates anything," said Halladay, who later allowed a double to Burrell. "I thought it was a pretty good pitch. He had a conversation with the umpire, I looked at him, and he started yelling."
Halladay did not choose to exercise his last laugh, though.
"I was watching what was going on, and he started yelling," he said. "But you understand, there's a lot of emotions obviously at this point in this season. He's a competitior and these things happen."
pat the bat is a frat boy. he got owned by halladay. chief_jaysons
Any goodwill extended to Pat from the fans in games 1 and 2 is now officially gone. All boos from here on out. n62
Boos at the least, n62. Make it clear he's no longer welcome in our city. PhilaLogic
F Pat Burrell. Give him the royal treatment this weekend. I can't stand seeing him celebrate anything. If we're fortunate enough to win the series, I can't wait to see the look on his face. Guy55555
me and my brother are lifelong phillies fans going back to the 70s but we live here in SF and every time Burrell came to town with the Phils, the Giants fans let him have it, hard. Today we let him have it from exactly the same seats we witnessed Giants fans cursing at him....gave him a F U Burrell here and there sedale- What happened was that Burrell like many others know that Roy Halladay is a frontrunner and a fraud who depends on umpires giving him every pitch. Halladay played a very weak game even his bunts were weak. Notice how nobody questions Cliff Lee pitches as his pitches constantly hits the strike zone.
- Burrell is getting too big for his britches. He had some big hits for SF, but he's now settling back into his 0-4 .220 comfort zone. wylies99
L-10, can you ease off the "Wolf" parodies? (No? Okay...)
Per Burrell, I think that the fans and the team gave him much more than he deserved--the place of honor in the 2008 parade. What was he...about reason #12 that we won (?)--after (in no part. order) Hamels, Lidge, Utley, Howard, Rollins, Werth, Chooch, Victorino, Manuel, Gillick, etc...

I'm a little disappointed that Halladay didn't tell Burrell to shut the f%^& up, go get your f#$%ing glove, and take the field. I thought Halladay was more of a badass. Guess not. jphillyg
Don't worry Burrell will be kick to the curb again by SF... djw26
Burrell is lucky to be in the league. And even luckier to be on the Giants. He's a scumbag who needs to respect a future HOF who is ten times the player he is. NRA AL
You all know Pat the Bat is going to make a major error in left field Saturday night. Ron
Halladay for those of us who chose to see is very tired. He's a warrior for sure and we in Philly love those guys. The reality is besides losing his edge in the competition there is a risk of further injury. Lets hope the rest of the pitching staff takes a que from the Roy's and steps up the rest of the way. ALSO last night you saw just why Jason Werth must be resigned. When he can take the ball on his right side and unload he is the best in the business. Thats also why he needs to be in leftfield next year. Wally 24
Werth can be infuriating, his focus level seeming to wax and wane with the tides. That said, it is clear that he is essentially a gamer and a clutch player. Howard? A major waste of green. auntesther
I had a different take on the Halladay stare down. I think Roy was more interested in how HP ump, Jeff Nelson called that last pitch a strike when his first 3 to Torres were much closer. He looked at Burrell as if to say, "How can you argue? I'm the one who gave up a lead-off walk on 3 legit strikes. If anyone got hosed that inning, it was me!" Bellit
