I was in Milwaukee this weekend, so it was tough to keep a finger on the pulse of the city during Sunday's Phillies and Eagles games. A number of you have shared your various strategies via both email and this blog. A buddy of mine decided the best course of action was to head down to a bar off South Street so he could watch both. I picked his brain a little bit. The dominant jersey worn was Eagles, but a number rocked the Birds jersey and Phillies cap, so it was tough to get a read on the breakdown that way.

Anyway, I've got the overnight ratings here in my hand, and it's pretty surprising. I expected the Eagles to win, but according to these numbers they dominated. Keep in mind that the Eagles game was broadcast on Fox, while the Phillies game was on TBS, so the Cable/Broadcast factor has to be considered.

That said, the Eagles drew a 22.7 rating, while the Phillies drew a 13.8.

What does that mean? It means that about 674,000 households were tuned in to the Eagles, while 410,000 watched the Phillies.

Take from that what you will.

The Phillies will work out at Citizens Bank Park tomorrow, so we'll have a chance some important questions. Below are three I have. Feel free to add yours.

1) Is there any chance Cole Hamels doesn't start game one? I don't think there is any chance, but here is the once scenario in which you'd consider it: if you don't want Hamels pitching on three days rest, but you do want to line up Brett Myers for a possible Game 7, you could start Myers in Games 1, 4 and 7 and Hamels in Games 2 and 5 and Moyer in Games 3 and 6. But with the way Joe Blanton pitched, I'm not sure you would want to do that.

2) What becomes of J.A. Happ? Is there a need for him in the playoff roster, or would the Phillies be better suited bringing back Rudy Seanez or adding another bat to the roster? Happ was on the team ostensibly in case one of the starters was knocked out early. But that doesn't appear to be a concern right now. Although things can change, and it might be valuable to continue carrying him as insurance.

3) How will the Phillies pitch Manny Ramirez? I don't expect to get an honest answer out of this. But it will be interesting to see how they approach him. They pitched him very aggressively inside during the Phillies four-game sweep at Citizens Bank Park. but you don't want to let Manny beat you in the postseason. So do you give him the same treatment the Brewers gave Ryan Howard?

It means there are 410,000 smart people in this region. The Eagles are d-o-n-e. With only Joe Beimel as a lefty in the pen wonder if Chuck goes back to Utley-Werth-Howard?

I was watching both, but probably had the Eagles game on more because there was a lot more action going on. I definitely cared more about the Phillies, but the game boring as hell, I gotta admit.

Nova- with less lefties in the pen, why would Manuel be more inclined to split Utley and Howard? If he didn't do it against the Brewers, he won't during this series. (I assume you realize that the primary reason to split Utley and Howard is to avoid the opposing manager from bringing in a lefty).

Boy I have to admit that it's kinda sad when a city would rather watch the 2-3 Eagles lose than watch the Phillies go to the NLCS for the first time in 15 years. Cole Hamels is right to hope that maybe if we go further in the playoffs this year it will turn the city a little more red than green. Hopefully.

i dont know how far those numbers stretch. im at penn state and i went out yesterday morning and bought a splitter and some cable and set up side by side tv's. and i can honestly say this is the best mood i've ever been in after an eagles loss. 8 more wins phils!

That is pathetic. Just goes to show how much the NFL has taken over America, the advertisers telling us, "This is going to be your favorite sport because we can sell you the most with it," and the idiots responding "YES! PLEASE GIVE US MORE!" Whitey is spinning in his grave. LET'S GO PHILS!

Well I'm glad that they're are at least 7 smart people. Even if the Eagles were going to be 5-0 I would have rather watched the Phils play.

Sunday, the Eagles play at San Fran at 4. The Phils play in LA at 8. I bet the Phillies will get better ratings in the area than the Eagles.

The baseball people knew the Eagles and Packers were both playing at 1pm eastern and they scheduled the game at the same time. Common sense would tell you to put the baseball game at a different time.

I love the Phils but watching the Eagles lose is better than watching a baseball game. It is so slow and boring and its certianly not made for tv viewing. But I am still rooting for the Fightins.

The real idiots in this are the TBS/MLB schedulers, who should understand that the Phillies and Eagles should never play at the same time, so that this decision doesn't have to be made. The question here is, do the ratings consider all those people wearing their remotes out hitting the last/previous button every minute trying to catch all the action of both games? I know a LOT of people that were doing that.

The more people who prefer the Eagles over the Phillies the better. Less idiots for me to deal with at the games. Especially the morons who wear Eagles jerseys to a Phillies game. You have to have a certain amount of intelligence to understand the nuances of what is going on in the course of a baseball game. NFL games are all action all of the time. You don't have to use your brain to be entertained watching it. Thus the ratings difference.

That really is a pretty good rating on cable TV, great even. And the Eagles usually do about 30s for home games, so a 22 is pretty low. I betcha the games on local TV on FOX for the NLCS will crush the rating for Eagles-49ers Sunday.

They should see how many people started off watching the Birds and then switched over to the Phils. A number of people I know were taping the Eagles and watching the Phils.

Cy--You bring in Biemel to face Chase and bam, you then have Werth vs a lefty, which is a matchup you'd never get late innings. Werth kills left handed pitching. It makes sense. Brewers had multiple leftys, so even if you split Chase and Howard the Brewers had answers.

How can anyone get a read on the two teams, when one of them is only on cable. If you want to watch the Phillies, you have to pay a separate fee to watch them. Take the gambling out of the NFL, then we'll see who's most popular.

This is a bogus comparison because 40% of homes don't have cable/sat. Phils no doubt beat the birds where equal availability. Phils will crush birds now that they are on Fox

I've never seen a better group of people with incredible insight comment on a post. Each one of you made excellent points. As for Leron, how in the world could you find the baseball game boring when every pitch was important? If the Phils lost that game, we'd be looking at a scary game 5 tonight. I think my favorite post was the one that said that if you took the gambling out of the NFL, then ratings would be in the toilet. Baseball fans are smart enough not to blow their money gambling it away on football games. By the way, I'd like to see football teams average over 40,000 for 81 home games. I guarantee you that even with the gambling that after about 20 home games (40 total), people would be so bored with football. That should be the true measure. Football season is only during one season while baseball covers 3 seasons (spring, summer, fall). It will be justice served if the Phils end up being the team to bring a championship to Philadelphia. Leron, I hope you can get excited for game 1 because that isn't going to a boring game. If anything else, the atmosphere surrounding it will not allow it to be one.

I think football is more popular than baseball for the same reason that action movies are more popular than dramas generally. I think we have increasingly got a culture that prefers action and lots of it. Baseball can seem slow at times, esp. if it's a pitcher's duel. One has to cultivate an appreciation for the finer points, like the placement of pitches, the acrobatics of defense (my personal favorite), the strategy of managers (esp. NL). Also, I like how you can feel you get to know a bit of the players' personalities or at least their approach to baseball. I also like that I can clearly see the action, not everyone piling into each other. Personally, I think baseball's the best!

Since 1983 the Phils left 1210 AM and affiliates then came back. When they came back they had less coverage area west of the city. In the old days Phillies dominated all the way out to York county through Harrisburg and north. Today you are lucky to receive a broadcast on AM Radio in those areas with the best of radios. Cable TV has helped but for those who can't afford cable, free TV is their only hope and there are no local TV stations as before who cover Phils. They do cover the Orioles which is a joke. So I guess what I have noted is the Phils have placed themselves in this position by choice. Next year increase the market by increasing the broadcast area on both TV and Radio.

Dull
No team would go with only 10 pitchers and 7 bench players. They should revert back to 5 bench players as they carried all but a few games all season. Happ is needed in case the game goes into extra innings. He is the only pitcher in the pen stretched out ot go more than 2 innings. The real question is why carry seldom used So Taguchi who is even more redundant with only one lefty in the Dodger pen compared to three in the Brewers pen. I would carry Seanez. They were caught short in game 3 when Moyer had a high pitch count, had to leave early and the pen was taxed without Rudy.

The answer to the Manny Ramirez question it pitch him exactly the way we did during the 4 game sweep at home but with one exception: with men on or in a game tie situation go away with breaking stuff to get 2 strikes then a fast ball over the platte above the letters. If he walks he walks so what don't let him take you out of the game. They will do the same with Howard and Utley in game situations. Happ will stay for the extended long relief role but you do have to wonder about the bench selections. Coste did well against LA and although you lose some defense the hitting down the bottom would be welcomed. Hamels is coming off a commanding start against the Brewers there is no reason he shouldn't start game #1. Starting anyone else is playing the losers game in my mind and we don't want to go there. Game #2 is the big question for me. Would Moyer be better suited to start at home and let Myers start the first game in LA where he pitched well I don't know. Charlie will have to figure it out.
