Taking stock of the payroll
Daily News staff
The Phillies' Opening Day payroll was a club-record $130,844,098 this season, including nearly $20 million that was guaranteed to former players Adam Eaton, Geoff Jenkins and Jim Thome. Thanks to a club-record attendance of 3,600,693 and eight home postseason games, a payroll increase is not out of the question.
But the Phillies already have a considerable chunk of money - roughly $94.5 million - locked up to 11 players who are under contract for next season. Once they exercise the $9 million option on ace lefthander Cliff Lee's contract, they will have $103.5 million dedicated to 12 players.
Here is a look at where things stand at the moment in terms of salary. (Players who are not arbitration eligible are not listed.)

It's so nice to get that $20,000,000 off the books in 2010. Nothing makes me cringe more than seeing that type of money going to guys that are not even on the team. Hope the Phils can avoid those types of future situations. caseyl_5
Ryan Howard: $19,000,000 ????? Not worth half of it! 13 strikeouts - New World Series Record Bates
Yes Bates, but he carried the Phillies to the World Series so that's worth something. ship01
Lidge at $11.5 million. Holy cow. Phils learned nothing from the Adam Eaton debacle. Speaking of Lidge: looking forward to seeing you sell your house in Englewood and donate your salary to feed the poor. As Francis of Assisi wrote, "preach the gospel always, sometimes use words." Manor2009
nice to see 41,500,000 off the books in 2010...CHP is the only free agent I would consider bringing back, and only at 4-4.5 so he is in line with madson and romero tkohl
They have 97 for 11 players + Lee + Feliz is 111.5 for 13. That's about what MLB says their payroll was for 2009. Not much room to improve the team. P Even
PAY CHOOCH soliteryman- sign free agents myers, park and eyre...let the rest walk. let feliz walk. no arbitration for brutal...er, i mean bruntlett. extend lee. trade some of the OF prospects for 3b and/or middle infield prospects. have a ton of OF talent on the farm; no infield talent. and have got to find a lead-off hitter....if there was one glaring difference in the WS besides pitching, it was the #1 and #2 spots in the lineup. i love rollins, but he CAN NOT leadoff. and i love shane, but he's not much better than jimmy...although we don't really know CAUSE THEY NEVER LET HIM TRY (sorry, i'll stop screaming now).

ironic we were paying thome while was trying to beat us in the playoffs zwarte piet
Bates: 45 regular season Home Runs; 141 RBI's Did you forget that?!? - How come I don't see anyone commenting on the Mets? Wanna see their payroll?!? And what a stinkbomb of a season they had (the injuries, I know, I know... but still, come on) You can't have it both ways, people: you either complain about how much they make or how much better the other teams are - do you want to be the Florida Marlins?!? phillies_eagles
Free agents: I like Myers, but not at $12mm. If you could somehow sign him long term for $5-6mm per year average. Park and Myers are the only two I'd like to retain. Arbitration: give Ruiz anything he wants, give a slight raise to Blanton. Options: Don't see a good replacement for Feliz - his defense saved more runs than Phillies didn't score because of his lack of offense. Lee is a no brainer - for whatever money, sign him long term. Result: need a bat off the bench. Difference in the WC (besides pitching) was Matsui -- a DH, who played half the games. Compare his performance to Stairs'. Enough said. glroark
