Matt Flippin' StairsOK, so you already knew that.

But it was still fascinating last night to watch the complete replay of Game 4 at Dodger Stadium, which aired on Comcast Sports Net. I'm sure most of you watched it on TV, but it was my first time doing so, which gave me an entirely new perspective on the game. Keep in mind, when all of the events of that night were unfolding in real time, I was sandwiched in between Paul Hagen and Jim Salisbury in the not-so-modern press box of the stadium while pounding away on my laptop, deadline on the East Coast fast approaching. For the previous 30 minutes, I had been re-writing my "Phillies win, take 3-1 series lead story" into a "Rough sixth inning evens series" story. Then Shane Victorino did the improbable to tie the game, and I stopped tying and started watching. A couple of batters later, when Matt Stairs walked to the plate with a man on base, I turned to Hagen.

In jest, I said, "Watch, now Stairs will hit a home run" (We sports writers can be a cynical lot).

Four pitches later, Stairs swung, and the ball leapt off the bat, and there was never a doubt, and as soon as ball met wood, I channeled my inner-Utley and said the first thing that came to mind:

"No (bleeping) way."

From that point on, I don't remember anything, just the mad flurry of fingers on key board combined with the almost audible hope that Brad Lidge would not blow his first save of the season and cause me to hit the delete key.

Anyway, back to the original point. I watched the game on the television last night, which was a study in dramatic irony.

A few observations that have since been overshadowed by the Stairs home run:

1) Almost as remarkable as Stairs' home run was the fact that the Phillies were still in the game after the sixth. They had men on second and third with no out and bases loaded with one out, yet allowed just two runs to stay within striking distance.

2) The diving double play by Utley to end the inning didn't get nearly as much press as it should have.

3) Ryan Madson was absolutley electric in that frame, and Scott Eyre's contribution (retiring Andre Ethier) was almost as important.

4) Speaking of Ethier, how about that diving catch he made in the bottom of the fifth to rob the Phils of two runs?

5) I swear Dodger Stadium seemed louder on television than it was in person.

6) Geoff Jenkins is in just about every camera shot. I know he struggled at the plate this season, but he was a great presence in the clubhouse. Probably the most memorable shot from that game is him grabbing Charlie Manuel's shoulders from behind and giving him a High 10 after Victorino's home run.

Here's the game story from that night, by the way.

Have a great Christmas

I think Schmidt's home run in 1980 against the Expos was the biggest home run in the history of the Phillies. Matt Stairs' home run is a close second. This was an incredible year!

Thank you, Matt Stairs, for the greatest Christmas gift you could ever give Philadelphia. It was one of the greatest moments in Phillies history.

I would put Victorino's slam against Sabbathia before Stairs' home run - that seemed to set the tone for the rest of the post season. But agreed that Schmitty's home run in Montreal was the biggest.

I put Utley's spectacular double play vs. the Dodgers in this game on a par with his gem in the clincher against the Rays in the World Series. The Dodgers had a chance to blow this game wide open had Utley not come through. Had the Dodgers gone on to even up the series at 2-2, who knows? You're right, Murph, when you point out that the play didn't get nearly the attention it deserved at the time. Obviously, Utley's play vs. the Rays deserves all the kudos it receives, especially considering it happened late in the Series clinching victory, but the gem vs. the Dodgers should not be overlooked.

The stairs home run. I got the Phillies book this morning and when I'm looking at the picture of him after he hit that, i felt like a 5 year old looking at that. Brings back the best memories for a 19 year old sports fan in philadelphia

Murph, totally agree w/the Jenkins point...he struggled a lot this year but I found a boatload of respect for him during the entire playoff run, here is a guy who never made the playoffs in his previous 10 seasons & he enjoyed every second of it...in every game, it seemed like he was always the first guy to greet someone after they scored or made a big play, his pinch hit double in Game 5 pt 2, I think, was fate rewarding him

Another great defensive play was Moyer's diving tag after fielding a bunt. He got the guy (I forget who) but the ump missed the call because he was out of position. If the ump would have made the right call, that play would have been highlight material.

The Stair's home run was just a little bit better than the Stair's post-game interview: "I'm not gonna lie to ya...I went up there swinging for the fence... That's what I do." Freakin' classic!

Top 5 HR in Phillies History: 1. Sisler's to win the 1950 pennant 2. Schmidt's to win the 1980 pennant 3. Stairs in the 2008 NLCS 4. Schmidt's 500th 5. Dykstra's in the 1993 NLCS Honorable mention: Blanton in the WS, Howard's 50th in 2006, Schmidt's 4th in one game, Klein's 4th in one game. What am I missing?

Jamie Moyer diving off the mound to make the stop and scooping the ball to 1st all in one motion. To heck with the ump who wrongly called the runner safe---that was an incredible play.

Funny you should spotlight the Stairs home run. I got the box set of WS games from my wife this morning. After the kids opened their gifts and got wrapped up in whatever new toy struck their fancy, the first thing I did was pop in this game, go right to that inning, and re-live the Victorino and Stairs homers. Victorino's was surreal, looking like a nice line drive off the bat that may get him a double to becoming a jaw-dropping home run that put the Phils right back in the game. The Stairs home run may be the most majestic home run I've ever seen on tv. There was no doubt about it, and it couldn't have looked more beautiful cutting through the night sky of any park but Dodger Stadium. Jenkins was the team's best cheerleader. It made his big hit in the final WS game that much sweeter.
