Signed and sealed, Martinez placed on DL; When might he face Mets?

POSTED: Wednesday, July 15, 2009, 9:45 AM

I know what you are thinking - that didn't take long.

But the Phillies' decision to place Pedro Martinez on the disabled list this morning was an expected one, seeing as though he will need at least two minor league starts before he is ready to join the team's rotation. Martinez's starts - which, I am sure, have the ticket managers at a Phillies minor league affiliate near you salivating - will be "rehab starts," and he will not take up a roster spot until he is activated, which likely won't come until August.

There is a news conference at 12 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park.

Just for fun, here's a look at how the Phillies rotation could look through August. We'll be able to let you know the Phils exact plans for Martinez in a couple hours here. For now, I'll guess that they have him throw a side at Citizens Bank Park today, then send him to Clearwater while the team is visiting the Marlins. Martinez would then pitch in either a simulated game or a Gulf Coast League game on Saturday, then will pitch in another minor league game on July 25 or July 26. Then I would guess that he'd pitch in Lehigh Valley on July 31, before the Phillies unveil him on Aug. 6 against Colorado at home.

According to this plan, Martinez would get his first crack at the Mets on Aug. 23 at Citi Field.

Coste was released to make room for Ibanez returning from the DL.

of course the Jays are going to want Happ, along with several others....that is a formality.....I would not be surprised AT ALL if they demanded Happ and Drabek

My prediction, Pedro won't pitch 20 innings for the phightin' before he actually gets a legitimate injury, not just, as Dierte says (who I agree with) a strategic posting on the DL for roster purposes. Get Halladay, and if Pedro has no durability, you can throw him in the pen.

Lopez has looked pretty good. Just written off though. Too Bad.

Best guess I've heard is that he will be the fifth starter, replacing Happ after he (Happ) gets sent to Toronto. If it doesn't work, they are not out an arm and a leg since the contract is mostly incentives. Now let's focus on getting Halladay on board.

Assuming they get halladay is it really a given that happ is gone? I'm not so sure. I don't think amaro trades happ AND drabek... prob one or the other along w/some combo of taylor/marson/brown/donald... long as we get halladay, i think we're ready to roll into october w/halladay hamels happ blanton and pedro (and make moyer another long reliever) or halladay hamels moyer blanton and pedro... either way, we gotta be the favorites. and now that we won't have home field in the Series, we should DEF be celebrating again come october...

Not in the closer role Pratt. He has 9 this year and 18 overall if not mistaken. BJ Ryan was the closer and he was released. That's why I think Madson could be appealing to the Jays.

Doesn't make sense to have Moyer and Martinez, two pitchers who might only give you 5-6 innings, pitching back-to-back. BP will be toast by Labor Day.

Ibañez replaced Coste on the 25 active roster. Coste was not replaced on the 40-man roster until now by Pedro.

Murph, instead of jotting down silly, non-informed, pie-in-the sky lists, maybe you should shop for a new jacket for use in your website photo. Sit on it Fonzie! Does anyone else agree with me that Murph's picture is probably sitting on Anson William's memory wall?

Dierte: Fan in Jerusalem may not know have a clue what he's talking about - but don't knock being a baseball fan in Jerusalem: Playing baseball next to the Valley of the Cross! Waking up at 3am to watch the World Series! Good stuff. The only thing wrong with baseball in Israel is the disproportionate number of Mets fans there.
