I know what you are thinking - that didn't take long.
But the Phillies' decision to place Pedro Martinez on the disabled list this morning was an expected one, seeing as though he will need at least two minor league starts before he is ready to join the team's rotation. Martinez's starts - which, I am sure, have the ticket managers at a Phillies minor league affiliate near you salivating - will be "rehab starts," and he will not take up a roster spot until he is activated, which likely won't come until August.
There is a news conference at 12 p.m. at Citizens Bank Park.
Just for fun, here's a look at how the Phillies rotation could look through August. We'll be able to let you know the Phils exact plans for Martinez in a couple hours here. For now, I'll guess that they have him throw a side at Citizens Bank Park today, then send him to Clearwater while the team is visiting the Marlins. Martinez would then pitch in either a simulated game or a Gulf Coast League game on Saturday, then will pitch in another minor league game on July 25 or July 26. Then I would guess that he'd pitch in Lehigh Valley on July 31, before the Phillies unveil him on Aug. 6 against Colorado at home.
According to this plan, Martinez would get his first crack at the Mets on Aug. 23 at Citi Field.

You said it Dave, "didn't take long" I thought it would take 3 starts (or @10 innings) it didn't even take a full day. f_i_j: the DL thing is a necessary formality. Otherwise they'd have to send somebody on the current roster down. He isn't hurt, but per MLB rules, they can't just DL somebody 'because'. There has to be an official medical reason, even if it is a phantom injury.- Honestly, this is a great move. If it works out - GREAT! If it doesn't, oh well. $1mill is nothing, considering what else is out there in the way of pitching.— Philth

Comment removed.- I know. The minute they were discussing Pedro, my first thought and I posted in this same blog, was the Happ was one of the players Toronto may want to replace Halladay. I was just half kidding. Toronto also needs relief pitching and Madson will provide that, plus he is not making a lot of money and is young. Exactly what Toronto wants. - I believe the Phillies have 39 players on the 40-Man roster after they released Coste. Pedro was going straight to the minors for a few rehab starts so they didn't need to send anybody down from the 25 active roster either.— EL Zorro

- Madson makes no sense for either team. The Phillies need him and Toronto wants younger starting pitching. They don't want to take on money, (btw, he makes alot) that's the reason they're looking to move Halladay.— booman55
