Schneider deal complete

POSTED: Thursday, November 17, 2011, 3:33 PM
The Phillies have signed Brian Schneider to a one-year contract. (Michael Bryant/Staff file photo)

As expected, catcher Brian Schneider has signed a one-year contract with the Phillies.

Schenider will make $800,000 with the possibility of another $200,000 in incentives for games played. That is a paycut from last season when he made $1.5 million.

Schneider, 34, made 36 starts for the Phillies last season and the team went 28-8 (.777), including 27-3 (.900) in his first 30 starts. From May 7 through September 6, the Phillies went 19-0 in Schneider’s starts.

Schneider batted .176 with two home runs and nine RBI in 41 games.

With Schneider behind the plate in 2011, Phillies pitchers posted a 2.85 ERA and he threw out 13% (3-23) of potential basestealers.

Out of all those quoted stats, the only ones that aren't irrelevant are his terrible hitting and terrible defense. Catcher ERA and W/L aren't relevant statistics, I hope they try out Valle next September, A team should have a backup catcher who can throw more than a few runners out and hit for *some* contact.

So the only stats that matter are the one's that conveniently support your theory? I hope you're not a scientist or god forbid, a juror.

And of course the photo of Schneider is of him mishandling the baseball.

Ruben is out of money so the bench will be weak again

Crazies out again. Now we're complaining about back-up catchers. The reality is (a) there aren't other significant upgrades at back-up catcher, and (b) this pitching staff is comfortable and likes Brian - especially Worley. If you're losing games b/c you back-up catcher can't hit, you've got bigger problems. Relax people.

I'm not Denny, but "relaxing" gets me an enjoyable season of entertaining baseball with a disappointing finish. Of course, I have a life outside of watching strangers play a sport. Must suck to have so little to live for on your own.

Still waiting for the complainers to mention a specific name as an alternative option for a back-up catcher. Simply saying the bench has to improve doesn't mean anything. No one disagrees that the bench is simply average at best. It's not a matter of being apathetic, it's a matter of realizing you can only improve certain areas and back-up catcher isn't going to be one this off-season simply because there aren't any other options representing a significant upgrade.

A specific name? How about three? Just to name a few, of course.

    Ryan Doumit
    Ramon Hernandez
    Ivan Rodriguez

Ryan Doumit is a poor defensive catcher and injury prone. He made $5.2m last season and just rejected a $3m offer from the dodgers. I don't see the Phillies paying over $3m for a backup catcher, who's only job is to start day games after night games. Pudge will be 40 in a couple weeks and hit .218 last year. He made $3m the last 2 seasons, so I don't know what he would be asking for. I heard the Phillies had interest in him, but didn't sign him. I like Ramon Hernandez, but he's a class A free agent and also probably too much money. Hernandez and Doumit should probably be starting catchers somewhere. The Phillies don't need a starting catcher.

    All fair points. But ....

"Doumit is a poor defensive catcher."
Schneider is a good defensive catcher?

"I don't see the Phillies paying over $3m for a backup catcher, who's only job is to start day games after night games."
Doumit also has experience playing first base and right field, which would further provide Charlie flexibility to an aging and oft-injured team.

"Pudge will be 40 in a couple weeks and hit .218 last year."
If it's defense you want, Pudge, even at age 40, is still Hall of Fame caliber behind the plate.

"He made $3m the last 2 seasons, so I don't know what he would be asking for."
    I guess we'll never know.

"I like Ramon Hernandez, but he's a class A free agent and also probably too much money."
Fair point. Truth be told, I never expected Rube to pursue Hernandez, nor Hernandez accepting a backup gig. I merely added him to the list because I would prefer him than Schneider as the team's No. 2 or 1A catcher for this reason: Ruiz has shown remarkable durability since 2007.
But he, too, will be 33 on Opening Day. And of all the players in the lineup the team can probably least afford to be without for a prolonged period of time is Ruiz. And the idea of Brian Schneider being elevated to No. 1 catcher frightens me more than even Eli Whiteside taking over for Buster Posey.

I hate to criticize when I don't know all the possible deals that are being worked on, but I hope there's a better plan than this for a backup catcher.

This is inane. Surely if the team wants to get younger and with some hitting, Brian was not the choice. And Rube loves Mart, and Valdez/// Where are the routine guys who are at least 27-8-9 who could make the team younger and could at least hit 240?? This is just silly and I do not see how this aids the team with its youth and hitting woes.

Phils went 1-5 in his last 6 starts (can post irrelevant stats all you want) -- bottom line is that relevant stats say he can't hit period (probably worse hitter in baseball) and can't throw anyone out --but go shell out $150 million for non-slugging former slugger and $50 million for reliver --now can't afford to retain best young pitcher on team (Hamels) and have holes at catcher (Ruiz is barely adeqaute at best), 1st, 2nd, 3rd, ss, and left field and every bench posiotn -- way to go Rube

They're not paying him much, but I don't know what they gain. Maybe he manages the pitchers well (as evidenced by the Phils' stellar record with him behind the plate)?

At long last, Phillie fans are moaning the signing of Brian Schnieder, the BACK UP catcher. Whats next, the slower than average bat boy? Give us all a break. I doubt very much he will hit that low this season. Hard to believe he won't hit better. As for Martinez/Valdez, I agree with some of the posts. Martinez is not good for the bench at all. Valdez is a timely hitter with a better glove, bat, and arm. Simple ast hat. Martinez has minor league options now that his rule 5 roster spot need not be guaranteed. I'd be more concerned with short stop right now.

The good news from this signing might mean Vance Worley will stay and be one of the starters in 2012.

The only backup catcher available who would be a clear upgrade over Schneider is Pudge Rodriguez, and the Phillies probably don't want him because they'd have to pay him more than Schneider.

our 2 biggest weaknesses are our offense and bench which basically are almost 1 in the same because our bench couldnt hit, so far with the exception of adding a little power with Thome, they have yet to address our weakness at all. I hope they have some sort of plan that we dont know about because nothing has changed with this team yet. We lost Madson and got Papplebon so that cancels itself out, we lost Gload and got Thome so that was one improvement but we need speed and pure hitters on this bench. No more Valdez and Martinez please.

Signing a guy named Schenider for $800,000 would probably make more sense then signing Scheider.

You like to throw in the Phillies record (28-8) when Schneider started...who here really think that has much at all to do with Schneider himself? HOF/All-Star-type pitchers were throwing to him...and people really think a .176 hitter was the key part?

PhightinPhil you had me cracking up. Didn't even realize the photo is one of Schneider mishandling a ball. That's priceless. They didn't have ONE pic to use of him doing something constructive? I agree, backup catcher is the least of the Phillies worries, but I am surprised they resigned him. Solid at calling a game, but gave you NOTHING offensively. And Chooch struggled mightily as well at the plate last year. So I expected them to get a backup catcher who can actually hit a baseball. Some teams have 1 or even 2 catchers that can hit. We have none. But I do agree, backup catcher is last on the list of things they need to address. But they do need to add some speed. Their fastest guy on the bench is Martinez if they bring him back. And he's slow...

Ruiz hit 0.283 (5th in ML) last year with a 0.371 OBP (3rd in ML) and a 0.332 wOBA (9th in ML). I'm really not in agreement with the "Chooch struggled mightily" comment......

Gene Mauch used to say he didn't care if a catcher got one hit as long as he could handle a pitching staff............I guess the image of a catcher has changed in the days of long ball and ALL offense over pitching and defense

Some fans should just skip the whole 2012 season since they know how bad it will be. Better yet they should find a new team to root for where their line ups are filled with superstars and their teams are guaranteed a ws every single season. Trouble with half the posters on here is that they expect a ws every year like it is their right. If it doesn't happen the whole season is a bust..800,000 bucks for a catcher whom the pitchers seem to like isn't really a whole lot to whine about.
