Hall of Fame third baseman Mike Schmidt and former All-Star second baseman Mickey Morandini will be guest instructors during spring training for the Phillies, the team announced.

Manager Charlie Manuel will retain his entire coaching staff: Mick Billmeyer (bullpen/catching), Rich Dubee (pitching), Davey Lopes (first base/outfield), Pete Mackanin (bench), Sam Perlozzo (third base/infield), Milt Thompson (hitting) and bullpen catcher Jesus Tiamo.

The spring training staff features 21 instructors, including Manuel. From the player development staff, it will be coordinators Mike Compton (field), Gorman Heimueller (pitching), Steve Henderson (outfield/baserunning), Doug Mansolino (infield), Sal Rende (hitting) and Ernie Whitt (catching), along with the triple-A staff of Dave Huppert (manager), Greg Gross (hitting) and Rod Nichols (pitching). Gulf Coast manager Roly deArmas and rehab pitching coach Carlos Arroyo round out the spring training staff.

Schmidt, 60, returns for his ninth spring as a guest instructor and Morandini, 43, is back for his second year.

I was a big Morandini fan, but I didn't recall him being an All-Star. He made the team in 1995.

    I miss hearing HK say "Mick-ey Mor-an-di-ni."

Can't we trade Thompson for a couple maple bats? They would do more for this team than he has during his tenure. No hitting coach should keep his job when teams go into massive slumps every year.

Seeing a 60 next to Schmidts name is surprising. We are getting old.

The big question is will the Phillies use Ali Modami as their batboy again at all this year. He looked like Matt Stairs jr. out there picking up the bats.

Every team in the big leagues slumps at different points during the season...they also consistently are in the top echelon in the league when it comes to hitting, so I think Thompson is doing fine.

Scott Franske and LA are much better to listen to than Wheeler and McCarthy. There needs to be a major change....Of course, there will never be another Harry.

Morandini = 1995 All-Star Selection. He made his debut (for just 25 games) back in '90 and was one of five guys selected to the '95 All-Star Game roster (along with four other Phillies). 1995 stats = .283BA, 6HR, 7 triples, & 49RBIs.
