Savery gets final bullpen spot as Phillies finalize Opening Day roster
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
The Phillies just announced their Opening Day roster. It was pretty much set, except for the final bullpen spot, which will go to lefty Joe Savery, capping an amazing comeback story for the starter-turned-first-baseman-turned-reliever.
Here it is:
STARTERS (5): Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels, Vance Worley, Joe Blanton
RELIEVERS (7): Jonathan Papelbon, Mike Stutes, Antonio Bastardo, Chad Qualls, David Herndon, Joe Savery, Kyle Kendrick
OUTFIELDERS (5): Juan Pierre, Shane Victorino, Hunter Pence, John Mayberry Jr., Laynce Nix
INFIELDERS (6): Jimmy Rollins, Placido Polanco, Ty Wigginton, Jim Thome, Freddy Galvis, Pete Orr
CATCHERS (2): Carlos Ruiz, Brian Schneider
Outfielder Scott Podsednik and lefty reliever Raul Valdes were assigned to the minor leagues. Starting the season on the disabled list will be Jose Contreras, Ryan Howard, Chase Utley and Michael Martinez.
Good for Savery. What a great story of perseverance. PhightinPhil
I am thrilled for Savery, but dismayed that Hector Luna did not make the team. PhightinPhil
Comment removed.- Herndon is eight years younger than Valdes and is a better pitcher.

It doesn't matter what the Phillies opening day roster is. The Philadelphia Eagles still won't win the Super Bowl this season.

Will Utley play again? Why the crazy story of no fielding or hitting training and he goes to Arizona for exercise program?? tulsaphil

why would they keep a no hit infielder like orr over luna who has had a monster spring and is a right handed bat...i know he has speed andcan play ss and 2b but so what italia1234- Right. Who needs a backup shortstop and second baseman? I say ship out Pete Orr and sign Vlad Guerrero to take his spot on the roster.

That bullpen behind Papelbon and Bastardo is scary ugly. RickSchuBlues
Herndon? Really? F@#$! Penfold18
Stutes was pretty good until September last year if I remember right. Herndon and Kyle Kendrick will find a way to stay on the Phils roster after the apocalypse-they have the MLB survival skills of roaches. Great for Savery. He was jerked around so many times it didn't seem fair. I assume he'll be pinch hitting for Pete Orr and Brian Schneider when Chollie utilizes the double switch in extras. kjuggs77
italia, do you know the game? Orr can play 6-7 positions well. He may not have Luna's power but he's good enough for now and what we need. Apparently the people in charge who know these things, think so too.
Nice to see Savery stick. We may need him if the mysterious velocity gnomes keep hanging on to Bastardo's fastball......plus he can pinch hit in a 15 inning game, too! Mark1npt
Savery is a telent. If things go south at first .He could be an emergency player. and yes he can bat for himself late in the game and save a hitter for another point in the game. kid wasnt a 1st rounder for nothing heisman
