Assistant hitting coach Wally Joyner and first base coach Juan Samuel will return to the Phillies for the 2014 season, manager Ryne Sandberg announced Thursday.

Also, the Phillies outrighted four players off the 40-man roster: righthander J.C. Ramirez, lefthander Cesar Jimenez and outfielders Roger Bernadina and Casper Wells.

Last season was Joyner’s first with the Phillies after being away from the game for 4 years. Joyner, 51, had spent 2 years (2007-08) as the hitting coach for the Padres and 4 years (2009-12) as the lead hitting instructor for MLB International.

Next season will be Samuel’s fourth on the Phillies’ coaching staff. He was third base coach for the first 2 years before moving to first base for this past season. Samuel, 52, spent the final 6 weeks of the 2013 season as the third base coach after Sandberg replaced Charlie Manuel as manager.
