Ryan Howard, who has started every game this season at first base, serves as designated hitter tonight (the game officially is a home game for the Jays, who were displaced by the G20 Summit in Toronto held near the SkyDome).
Howard did not serve as DH in the Phillies’ 15 interleague games to date. Phillies manager Charlie Manuel said he’s using Howard as the DH as much to get Ross Gload a start at first base as to get Howard some semi-rest as the team plays its fourth of 20 straight games leading up to the All-Star break amid a wilting heat wave.
Howard entered 5-for-24 (.208) in six career games as DH, 72 points worse than his career average when he plays in the field. He will hit in his customary fourth slot.
Gload enters the game 2-for-2 off Jesse Litch; he’s a .333 hitter in 16 career games as DH, 2-for-4 in his one game as DH this season. Gload will hit eighth, ahead of catcher Brian Schneider.
