Ruf not in lineup for today's game against Strasburg and Nationals

POSTED: Wednesday, March 6, 2013, 8:09 AM

Darin Ruf went 0-for-4 with three strikeouts and misplayed a ball in the field yesterday against the Domincan Republic. On the spring, he is 3-for-23 with six strikeouts, two walks and one extra base hit.

Roy Halladay is facing Stephen Strasburg game in a rare spring training tilt between the Phillies and the Nationals.

Ruf is AL-bound, for a club that needs a young first baseman, which we do not.

In 2004/05 Howard was stuck behind Jim Thome. This situation seems a little similar except that Ruf is not playing well this spring. Howard was killing the ball back then (and is doing well this spring).

Its the Phillies fault that they did not value Ruf's talent and move him to left field 2 years ago . They knew he would never play 1B with Howard tied up . Maybe with 2 yrs playing LF in the minors he would be servicable as a LF

Ruf was never hightly rated by any objective player rankings -- his supposed potential "stardom" was invented by philly writers and fans based on some surprising good stats last year in the minors --much like Cloyd...at the end of the day anyone can be a flash in the pan at the minor league level, but that certainly didn't justify a g.m. not acquiring a professional major leaguer to play left field for the second straight year...the malpractice of the imbecile g.m. is once again on plain display to any objective observer

He will regain his stroke as well as adjust to LF if he spends a couple of months in AAA. He is a teriffic hitter and may have succombed to the pressure of making the defensive adjustment at the big league level.
Time will tell and I doubt it will take 2 yrs .

He's pressing. Just like Brown did. Welcome to life in the fishbowl. He'll work on everything in AAA and be back soon enough. Putting way too much pressure on himself.

The Ruf-for-LF guys are decreasing in number. Hardly unexpected, he's not an OF guy. Yet, at least. But he can hit. No big deal, he's going to LV soon and he'll have every opportunity to see if he can play LF.

Ruf will end up playing in Japan. He'll be 27 in a few months. He's not a Major League player.
