A short time ago, Ruben Amaro Jr. spoke to reporters for about 10 minutes.

The key points:

1) The Phillies will fill John Lannan's roster spot tomorrow, likely with a reliever. Lannan went on the disabled list today with a strained quad, and the initial word is that he could miss between six and eight weeks. The Phillies do not need to call up a starter until Monday, when Lannan's turn in the rotation arrives. Amaro said the starter will be chosen from the four young members of the Triple-A rotation: Tyler Cloyd, Jonathan Pettibone, Ethan Martin and Adam Morgan. Morgan threw 100 pitches today. If he was an option, the Phillies would not have allowed him to do that. He has pitched the best of all of them, although he has only made nine starts above Class A in his career. Also, he is not on the 40-man roster. That means the choice is likely between Cloyd, Martin and Pettibone. I would guess Cloyd gets the call because of his experience in the majors last year.

2) The Phillies opted against having a player fly back from Lehigh Valley's series in Pawtucket to join the team tonight. The relievers who have pitched well for the IronPigs who are on the 40-man roster include Justin De Fratus and Joe Savery. I would have De Fratus as the frontrunner at this point.

3) Domonic Brown had an X-Ray on his back that was negative and is available to play tonight, although he is not in the lineup. Amaro said the team did not consider calling up Darin Ruf to serve as another right-handed bat against the Cardinals, who will send lefty Jaime Garcia to the mound on Friday. The Cardinals also feature lefties Randy Choate and Marc Rzepczynski.

4) Delmon Young continues to progress but the Phillies have yet to provide an indication of when they expect him to be ready to play in the majors.

5) Amaro on the Phillies' failure to draw a single walk in their three-game series against the Reds: "I think it's ridiculous that we've had no walks in three days. I cannot believe it. More importantly, it's about not just walks, but producing, and we haven't done that. We haven't gotten hits, period. We haven't gotten hits with runners in scoring position, we haven't gotten hits to lead off innings. We need more people on base and more offensive production. You've got to give some credit to the pitchers, but not all of it. We just need to be better. It's as simple as that. Right now we're not."
