Roster-ology 1.0: Projecting your 2013 Phillies

POSTED: Monday, February 18, 2013, 9:25 AM

It is Day 6 of spring training, when, for the first time, hitters will face pitchers in live batting practice sessions. The exercise sounds a lot cooler on paper than in practice. Many of the hitters will not swing the bat, instead using the session to stand in the box and get acclimated to recognizing and timing pitches. The younger guys tend to be less patient.

Throughout the spring, we'll take a stab at projecting what the 25-man Opening Day roster will look like. What follows is our first attempt.

STARTING LINEUP

  1. Jimmy Rollins SS (ODDS OF MAKING ROSTER/DL: 100 percent)
  2. Michael Young 3B (100 percent)
  3. Chase Utley 2B (100 percent)
  4. Ryan Howard 1B (100 percent)
  5. Darin Ruf LF (60 percent)
  6. Domonic Brown RF (65 percent)
  7. Erik Kratz C (95 percent)
  8. Ben Revere CF (100 percent)
STARTING ROTATION
  1. Cole Hamels LHP (100 percent)
  2. Roy Halladay RHP (100 percent)
  3. Cliff Lee LHP (100 percent)
  4. Kyle Kendrick RHP (100 percent)
  5. John Lannan LHP (95 percent)
BULLPEN
  1. Jonathan Papelbon RHP/CL (100 percent)
  2. Mike Adams RHP/SU (100 percent)
  3. Antonio Bastardo LHP/SU (98 percent)
  4. Chad Durbin RHP/MID (100 percent)
  5. Jeremy Horst LHP/MID (75 percent)
  6. Justin De Fratus RHP/MID (50 percent)
  7. Raul Valdes LHP/MID (50 percent)
BENCH
  1. Laynce Nix OF-1B/LHB (95 percent)
  2. Kevin Frandsen 3B-2B/RHB (95 percent)
  3. Humberto Quintero C/RHB (50 percent)
  4. Freddy Galvis SS-2B-3B/SHB (70 percent)
  5. John Mayberry Jr. OF-1B/RHB (80 percent)
DISABLED LIST
  1. Delmon Young - OF/RHB (100 percent)
BREAKDOWN: The Phillies sound as if they expect Delmon Young to begin the season on the disabled list, which takes some drama out of an intense outfield battle. . .Mayberry seems likely to make the team as he is out of options and is one of the few members of the organization who has major league experience in center field, although Laynce Nix has played the position and Rule 5 pick Ender Inciarte will look to make the Phillies make a difficult decision on Mayberry. . .Young starting the season on the DL would leave the last few spots in the bullpen as the tightest roster battle. Mike Stutes, Jake Diekman and Phillippe Aumont would be the last three players off the roster in this scenario.

I know Jimmy is Charlie's leadoff man so its a moot point but I like:
Revere, Rollins, Utley, Howard, Young, Ruf/Brown, Brown/Ruf, Kratz
If he HAS to bat Rollins leadoff, Revere's only place would be 8th. he is not an ideal 2 hitter. He has little chance of scoring Rollins with a gapper while the opposite might happen a lot.
Unless Utley shows he has 25 HR power back, the lineup would be better balanced with:
Rollins, Utley, Young, Howard, Ruf, Brown, Kratz, Revere.

Re:Koons I'm so tired of people writing off Dom Brown. i assume he's one of the "others we know are all .240 hitters period".

Do you know where Chase Utley was when he was Dom Brown's age? A .239 hitter. He then hit .266 his age 25 season, and finally took off at age 26. Dom Brown is 25. Give the kid a chance. Just because he didn't get seasoned in college and was overhyped doesn't mean he won't be a great ballplayer. Not to mention that he's younger than Ruf. I think Brown could probably put up massive numbers if he played the whole year in AA like Ruf last year.

And the Ender thing has to be a joke. He hasn't even faced AA pitching yet.

If you think Delmon Young is an attitude problem based on hearing a few sound bites, take a listen to some of the latest utterings from Five Tool Brown.

That's discouraging. I'll have to see if I can find a few. Guys with attitudes spell "locker room cancer" in my book. If this is true, depending on the context of his statements, that's a possible problem.

Not sure of the set up of that lineup. The second half is too unproven. Why not Revere 2nd and M. Young 5th and move the other three down one notch. Young has proven that he can put the bat on the ball. Ruf, Brown, and Kratz still have some proving to do. D. Young will add the pop when he gets in there. I agree with Paul above in the clubhouse cancer issue. He can flat out hit and Rube is taking a chance on the fact that this is probably his last chance in the majors. Sometime it takes a little longer for some guys to realize that. I see a Brown/Ruf platoon and if Brown decides to get it together this year, then Ruf will be bench or AAA.

Delmon young doesn't like talking to the press. that is all his attitude is saying. ornery and miserable is exactly where we want him. have an attitude and go play your tail off Delmon. Barry Bonds and Manny Ramirez had attitudes also. i'm hoping his attitude is because of well deserved arrogance developed from handling major league pitching.

Same old line up that has gone down hill the last four years production wise with JRoll leading off, Utley 3rd and Howard 4th. Why not Revere leading off and a right handed bat between Utley and Howard. Move JRoll
to 5th or 6th where he can use his home run swing.

How about the odds the silly, old fool makes it through spring training?

His brain could lock up with all the questions about his contract.

predictions: d. young will get down to 180lb, hit .320/.395/.920 and convert to judaism. at home games, the phllies will elect not to use corner outfielders at all, rather play howard and m. young at the edge of the outfield grass and let revere cover everything else. the entire pitching staff will test positive for ped's, whereupon ruben will bring back wilson v to start every game until their suspension ends. he will also sign barry bonds as hitting coach and ph, but bonds will quit after a month coz cholly chooses to use him strictly as d. young's late innings defensive replacement, and won't let him talk to younger players about hitting. 'what does he know, anyway?' cholly will tell gelb and brookover, who will report it dutifully. ruf will be sent down after hitting .390/16/45/1.340 in april. 'he still needs seasoning,' ruben will tell gelb and brookover, who will report it dutifully.

Exactly. Revere should lead off and Rollins has proven he belongs (at least with this line up) in the 6 or 7 hole. Love your take on Manuel, but I bet he's being told who to keep and who to s**t can by Amaro. Now THERE'S a man that's never seen a bad plan he doesn't like.

Actually, I agree with Murphy -- but would bat Utley second and M. Young third, and would like to see Aumont make the club over Valdes. I don't get three lefties either.

Revere's OBP is poor; he'll have to play his way into batting second or leadoff and that will take months. Remember, Ruiz returns in May and while he will not reprise 2012, he's a fine 6 or 7 hitter.

Weird thing is, regardless of what D. Young does, we're not far away if the older guys can play 130 games. We need one of these two -- Brown or Ruf -- to seize an everyday job. One of them. I think that's do-able.

revere and young will not bat 1 and 2 neither will rollins bat 3rd(doesnt hit well their)but he will bat 1st with revere batting 2nd, howard 4th deal with it..utley like I have stated before if he can't hit .275 or better with 25hrs needs to be pulled out of the 3rd spot period who will replace him who knows, if ruf hits, d. young gets healthy he may hit 3rd many here would pull all the remaining hair(if any at all)out or your collective heads if that happens, too bad...
