Roster-ology 1.0: Projecting your 2013 Phillies
Here's our first stab at projecting what the Phillies' Opening Day roster will look like.
Roster-ology 1.0: Projecting your 2013 Phillies
David Murphy, Daily News Staff Writer
It is Day 6 of spring training, when, for the first time, hitters will face pitchers in live batting practice sessions. The exercise sounds a lot cooler on paper than in practice. Many of the hitters will not swing the bat, instead using the session to stand in the box and get acclimated to recognizing and timing pitches. The younger guys tend to be less patient.
Throughout the spring, we'll take a stab at projecting what the 25-man Opening Day roster will look like. What follows is our first attempt.
STARTING LINEUP
- Jimmy Rollins SS (ODDS OF MAKING ROSTER/DL: 100 percent)
- Michael Young 3B (100 percent)
- Chase Utley 2B (100 percent)
- Ryan Howard 1B (100 percent)
- Darin Ruf LF (60 percent)
- Domonic Brown RF (65 percent)
- Erik Kratz C (95 percent)
- Ben Revere CF (100 percent)
STARTING ROTATION
- Cole Hamels LHP (100 percent)
- Roy Halladay RHP (100 percent)
- Cliff Lee LHP (100 percent)
- Kyle Kendrick RHP (100 percent)
- John Lannan LHP (95 percent)
BULLPEN
- Jonathan Papelbon RHP/CL (100 percent)
- Mike Adams RHP/SU (100 percent)
- Antonio Bastardo LHP/SU (98 percent)
- Chad Durbin RHP/MID (100 percent)
- Jeremy Horst LHP/MID (75 percent)
- Justin De Fratus RHP/MID (50 percent)
- Raul Valdes LHP/MID (50 percent)
BENCH
- Laynce Nix OF-1B/LHB (95 percent)
- Kevin Frandsen 3B-2B/RHB (95 percent)
- Humberto Quintero C/RHB (50 percent)
- Freddy Galvis SS-2B-3B/SHB (70 percent)
- John Mayberry Jr. OF-1B/RHB (80 percent)
DISABLED LIST
- Delmon Young - OF/RHB (100 percent)
BREAKDOWN: The Phillies sound as if they expect Delmon Young to begin the season on the disabled list, which takes some drama out of an intense outfield battle. . .Mayberry seems likely to make the team as he is out of options and is one of the few members of the organization who has major league experience in center field, although Laynce Nix has played the position and Rule 5 pick Ender Inciarte will look to make the Phillies make a difficult decision on Mayberry. . .Young starting the season on the DL would leave the last few spots in the bullpen as the tightest roster battle. Mike Stutes, Jake Diekman and Phillippe Aumont would be the last three players off the roster in this scenario.

I hope the Phillies at least look at batting Revere leading off, and that Ruf gives them the RH bat behind Howard we've needed since Burrell left. PhillyfaninMD
Almost cold enough for hockey this morning -- they'll be swinging those bats to keep warm. ExiledinFla
Why would the Phils keep 3 lhp in the pen? Especially Valdes who in my mind is a mop up guy. If Stutes is healthy I'd much rather see him. I assume the front office wants to get Aumont regular work thus keeping him in aaa. His upside is phenomenal. I loved what I saw from him last year but he needs regular work finkel
Hopefully Delmond Young will be released by then. This guy is a cancer in the locker room and has a terrible attitude. I just don't understand this signing. Get rid of him now! Short Circuit
@SC: D. Young has anger issues, but what has he done to be a cancer in this clubhouse? Sounds like a hasty move. The guy can mash lefties and since other teams always try and stack lefties aganst the Phillies he has a lot of value in the lineup. Paul SoTX
Don't get all hyped up quite yet. Things tend to shake themselves out during Spring Training. The bullpen will take care of itself. Not so sure Cholly will want 3 lefties in the pen. As for the outfield, Brown/Ruf have to prove themselves. However, don't be surprised to see Ruf start in LF and Brown get the nod in RF. Young will start on the DL while Mayberry Jr will be the 4th outfielder to replace Ruf in LF in late innings. If Brown has issues with lefties, Mayberry becomes the right handed platoon player in RF. Nix will be the primary lefty off the pine, with Frandsen the utility guy for the infield. Don't be surprised to see Galvis back in AAA for "seasoning". Galvis needs constant play at SS as he is Rollins replacement in 2015. Rule V pick Inciarte may just be a 6th outfielder with rotating nagging injuries keeping one OF on the DL all season long. Again, we all shall see how it shakes out during Spring Training. drhoffman- I think they should put Ruf in LF, Brown in RF and leave them there (at least until they play themselves out of a job). If you don't give these guys a fair shot they'll never make it. Besides, the Phillies don't have anyone better to put in those positions. Delmon Young is not the answer. I do question the people who are down on him and call him a Clubhouse Cancer. So far he hasn't done anything to deserve that label with the Phillies. Wait until he does before you condemn the guy!

I am hoping this is the year Charlie splits up Chase and Ryan. Lefty specialists late in the game kill us. Don't think Durbin should be 100% with all the young guns out there in the bp. I think the Phils would eat his $1.1 million if it was obvious one of them was ready for that role. Baez and Qualls were painful lessons and we have hopefully learned from them. Can't argue with much else right now. vafan
As far as Delmon Young, it's beyond me how someone with so mush God-given talent can squander it. If this knuckle-head would work hard, he would be a very good player (ALCS MVP last year). When a professional athlete must be given a monetary incentive to get in shape, it is embarrassing. I've seen him in interviews and his attitude stinks. Quality pick up there Rube. mortt1956- Another example of Amaro's cluelessness. He is apparently not very astute at judging character. He was (supposedly) trying to bolster the outfield THIS year, not NEXT year. Typical stupid move all the way around with the Delmon Young acquisition.
- He's got to get on the field first, and that's why Amaro is clueless. He needs an outfielder NOW. Not 5 months from now.
Murph, I don't know what your problem is with Ruf but to give him a lesser chance of starting than Brown is laughable. What I saw of Ruf last year puts him way above one tool Brown. Careful, your lack of respect for a player that nearly everyone believes will be the left fielder for years to come is exposing you as a know nothing. BigT
Ruf may take a good bit of worrying the coaches with his defence, but
hopefully they will hang in there realizing what his bat can mean to this club while our power men rehab fully. It is flustering to hear
some of the negative comments concerning his ability to adjust to major
league pitching when all he did was rake when finally given the opportunity at the close of 2012 and in winter ball. Philvegas- Murphy, I'd love to know from where you're getting these "percentages". My guess is the oriface behind you, right below your spinal column.
