Rollins to return, hit third
Paul Hagen
Jimmy Rollins is back, but not hitting in his conventional leadoff spot.
Rollins will hit third tonight against Pittsburgh in his first appearance of the season at Citizens Bank Park. He strained his calf before the home opener April 12 and has not played since.
Shane Victorino will remain in the leadoff spot tonight.
Chase Utley will not play tonight, so Placido Polanco will play second and hit second, followed by Rollins, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez.
Greg Dobbs will start at third and hit seventh, with Carlos Ruiz hitting eighth.
Rollins made one rehab appearance for Clearwater and spent a week in extended spring training before his return.
In order to make room for Rollins, the Phillies designated Wilson Valdez for assignment.
my heart almost skipped a beat until i saw they are giving utley the night off... utley is our three hitter, and should be until the day he retires! but, if they are just giving him a rest, cool phillyfan9
Tonka is an idiot. Utley has flu-like symptoms and is day-to-day. UncleEddie
a rainout appears to be in the cards. r-joll might be waiting until wednesday night. fcskills
Tonka = fool...Utley has the flu. CLIFF LEE IS GONE...STOP WHINING!
I hope Wilson gets to stay in the system. As to rain, it may not be a good idea for Jimmy to play. Good pt. The Phils need to play when they are on a roll. Chase looked confused last night, 0-5 and the trip over first base. So it is a good day to allow Dobbs and Polly to play and in fact, Raul needs to sit too. Where has Ben gone??? KGKoons
Maybe taking the LaRussa approach and giving J-Roll experience hitting 3rd & 4th in the same game... not a bad idea; playing against the lowly bucs, experiments are welcome Lando_M
Charlie must have a lot of confidence in Rollins' recovery. First game back, and he puts him in the most critical spot in the lineup. I guess he'll see plenty of good pitches though. redcans- This may well be academic at this point, because it doesn't look promising for them to play tonight. The forecast is for rain straight through til tomorrow morning. Bretzky
Strained a calf and he missed a month. It certainly ain't hockey. Lappy will miss less time with a starined brain, let alone his taking a shot to the face earlier in the year and not missing a GAME. Apache9
Hey Tonka: According to CSN second baseman Chase Utley is not in the lineup because of flu-like symptoms. citizenworried- Murph, did the Phils give any consideration to a DL trip for Castro instead of taking the chance of losing Valdez via waivers?
I hope they keep Hooper and send schneider to the minors tdoc
Yes I am delighted to have Rollins back but, I wish there was something the Phils could do for Valdez. In all the circumstances Valdez was superb and to wind up DFA is sad. I hope nobody claims him and he remains in the Phils system. He and Castro are huge part of the reason the Phils are where they are today. Edae
Valdez needs a dirtnap.... Lcrest- Hope they are not bringing him back too soon. gho_matt
