Rollins to return, hit third

POSTED: Monday, May 17, 2010, 3:50 PM

Jimmy Rollins is back, but not hitting in his conventional leadoff spot.

Rollins will hit third tonight against Pittsburgh in his first appearance of the season at Citizens Bank Park. He strained his calf before the home opener April 12 and has not played since.

Shane Victorino will remain in the leadoff spot tonight.

Chase Utley will not play tonight, so Placido Polanco will play second and hit second, followed by Rollins, Ryan Howard, Jayson Werth and Raul Ibanez.

Greg Dobbs will start at third and hit seventh, with Carlos Ruiz hitting eighth.

Rollins made one rehab appearance for Clearwater and spent a week in extended spring training before his return.

In order to make room for Rollins, the Phillies designated Wilson Valdez for assignment.

Unless Larussa is managing the team tonight, I assume you mean Ruiz is hitting 8th.

nice to see that we now have the flexibily to give key starters a blow here and there, and still be able to roll out a major league lineup. and now that rollins is back, hopefully charlie will be more comfortable resting the outfielders - and more importantly getting francisco and gload some ABs.

I like it. Rollins was never really a prototypical leadoff hitter with his low on base percentage. Plus, Victorino has taken to the leadoff spot very well - his obp is up more than 50 points in the last three weeks. Hopefully this goes well tonight and Manuel can look at some other lineup configurations to get the most out of the team.
