Rollins slides in All-Star vote; Utley, Ibanez still lead

POSTED: Monday, June 29, 2009, 1:37 PM

Phillies second baseman Chase Utley and outfielder Raul Ibanez continue to lead in the National League All-Star fan balloting, and shortstop Jimmy Rollins has fallen back in the voting with four days remaining.

Utley’s total of 3,510,082 votes is second overall to St. Louis first baseman Albert Pujols’ 3,602,765. Utley has almost three times the votes of the Dodgers’ Orlando Hudson among second baseman (1,277,348).

Ibanez, who is on the disabled list, tops outfielders with 2,970,139 votes. Milwaukee’s Ryan Braun is second (2,654,061), followed by the Mets’ Carlos Beltran (2,085,028). The Cubs’ Alfonso Soriano is fourth with 1,916,598 votes and the Phillies’ Shane Victorino is fifth at 1,642,248. Suspended Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez has fallen back to seventh.

Rollins now trails Florida’s Hanley Ramirez by 254,257 votes. Ramirez has 2,026,174 to Rollins’ 1,771,917. Ramirez has been expanding his lead over the past several weeks, with Rollins continuing to struggle.

Ryan Howard remains second at first base behind Pujols with 1,644,971.

Third baseman Pedro Feliz is fourth with 1,132,441. The Mets’ David Wright continues to lead with 2,049,487.

The Cardinals’ Yadier Molina lead among catchers with 1,846,629 votes. The Phillies’ Carlos Ruiz has fallen out of the top 5.

The All-Star rosters will be announced Sunday for the July 14 game in St. Louis.

Charlie Manuel will manage the National League.

Happ may be 7-0 soon. If so outside chance of being named to club as opposed to Colbert.

Love what Happ's doing, but there's no chance he makes the all star team. 12 of his 19 appearances have come as a middle reliever, so he has even pitched enough innings yet to be listed among the league leaders. Cole won't make it either, at least not on the strength of his 2009 season. There are way too many NL pitchers having better years: Cain, Lincecum, Josh Johnson, Gallardo, Cueto, Billingsly, Duke, Santana, Harren ...

I dont want any phillies pitchers on the all star team....none but happ would deserve it, but all of them need the down time. Ruiz should be higher than 5th as well...he has really stepped up his hitting and his D is solid.

"Now batting for National League All-Stars batting .211 Phillies Short Stop JIMMY ROLLINS!" How embarressing would that be?

if they announced him as "Front runner, Jimmy Rollins" it would be okay, though

I don't know if Pedro will get picked, he is having a decent season, but nothing outstanding. He has some stiff competition at 3rd. 1st Wright will be the one voted in, then you have to take Pablo Sandoval of the Giants (340 BA) because he is off to a real hot start so far and the Nationals need a guy so Zimmerman (better BA and more Homers) will represent them. And I don't think they will take 4 3rd basemen, but if I looked hard enough I would find another guy more deserving that Feliz.

Rollins being on the all star team is no more of embarrasment then Soriano. All you fools look at is offensive production. funny how pitching and defense tend to win most games in this league. and last time i checked rollins was the best fielding shortstop in the league (maybe the game). he is also an ex-MVP, a world champ and a leader on our team. how bout cutting the guy some slack you fools.

You may be partially correct Mr Cheesesteak17, but in the case of the 'roll" called J, there is much too much 'mustard' on him and he needs to sit this one out. Ex MVP All star game may be played in the Mixican League this winter and would certainly qualify as the starter at short. For Philly, its Pats or Genos but no JRolls this year.

cheesesteak: all that you say is true, except for one thing-we aren't looking for gretnes over time, or who is a valuable player, but this season's all stars (best players). If J-Roll was having a great defensive year, and an average offensive one he would merrit consideration, but he's not doing that great on D (he's good, but not THAT good) and his O is pathetic. I'd still vote for him as the best SS of the decade, or the last 5 years in any case, but not as an All Star this year. As for defense counting-check how many time Bowa went to the AS game and he was one of the best defensive SS of all time

Rollins does not deserve to be on the AS team and the biggest travesty of all is that he probably will make it as a backup because he's in second with four days to go. If he had any class at all he'd decline and let the third place guy go since that guy most likely has better stats. Chase deserves it and I hope Ibanez comes off the DL so he can go to his first. Howard will make it as a backup. No pitchers will make it unless Cholly goes "homer" like all managers before him and picks one of his guys, probably Madson.
