Rollins return not imminent

POSTED: Tuesday, September 14, 2010, 6:07 PM

Jimmy Rollins said he is hoping that he will return to the Phillies line-up before the end of the regular season. But that's about as specific of a timetable as we can gather right now with regards to the short stop's strained right hamstring.

"I hope so," Rollins said when asked if he thought he'd be ready by the end of the regular season. "Studies show, even if it's a mild hamstring, even though the doctors like to say 7-to-10 days, it's usually three weeks. And that's at the mildest, before I can go and do what I need to do. But I'm not going to have three weeks. Three weeks, that puts us right at the playoffs, so, I'm definitely going to try to do my best to come back before that."

Rollins strained the hamstring last Wednesday.

Neither general manager Ruben Amaro Jr. or manager Charlie Manuel could (or, perhaps, would) say when they expect Rollins back, other than to label him "day-to-day."

As expected, the Phillies have flip-flopped Roy Oswalt and Kyle Kendrick in the rotation, starting Oswalt on Friday against the Nationals and Kendrick on Saturday. The move enables the Phillies to line up Oswalt, Cole Hamels and Roy Halladay for the series against the Braves that starts Monday. Those same three will then be available to pitch the season-ending series against the Braves in Atlanta.

The Marlins have tentatively listed Burke Badenhop as their starter tomorrow.

J.C. Ramirez, one of the three prospects obtained from the Mariners in the Cliff Lee trade, underwent right hip labral surgery. The procedure is similar to the ones that righthander Brett Myers and second baseman Chase Utley underwent in recent years. General manager Ruben Amaro Jr. said he expects Ramirez to be back pitching by spring training.

Gold glove shortstops are not a dime a dozen.

Gluteman is quite the joker. DL Rollins when the roster can go to 40 anyway and rehab him in the minors when all the minor leagues seasons are done. Almost missed the sarcasm.

He is obviously not stretching as he should as a professional baseball player. We'll need him in the playoffs....but only if he's right.

Let Jimmy rest and get healthy.. Valdez is doing a wonderful job playing defense at short. Victorino has been doing well in the leadoff spot too. If our pitching stays as it is and Howard and Utley can continue hitting well, we can absorb Rollins being out for awhile. The team has developed tremendous confidence in Valdez.

Jimmy Rollins is still the best fielding shortstop. He is trying his best to come back. After all he has done for us how could anyone put him done?

Castro had good hands and the range of a phone booth. Valdez good hands and decent range ... great Philin. When healthy Jimmy is still the best. Reyes has turned his team around to what .500?? And Escobar is where Toronto where good ss go to die (see Tony Fernandez). I agree at this stage of life Jimmy needs a personal trainer in the off season. (strength and Flexibity type)All you hatchet heads and Mutt fans Ignore his career. (leadoff as well as reg hrs, stolen bases,3 gold gloves, mvp of league, double figs in hrs,rbi's,3bs,2bs ... only done one other time in baseball history ... 4 consecutive playoffs, 2 ws 1 win) What the hell was I thinking??? Your right he stinks !!!

Valdez has been a life saver this season -- better than expected offensively and strong in the field. With our pitching (now) and hitting coming around, he's good enough, should Rollins miss key games. I just feel that Rollins, Utley and even Howard have played SO MUCH baseball over their careers, injuries like theirs will be part of the package. That's one reason why I want the Phillies to bring more AAA and AA players into and out of the Major League roster, so we can develop our own set of subs, instead of guys like Valdez (good as he is), Castro (weak as he was), etc.

Jimmy is not the heart and soul of this team, not this year. How could he be missing all the games he's missed and still the Phils are 2 games up in the division. Lots of other injuries and not hitting are why we aren't running away with the division, not just the loss of Jimmy. Valdez is better than adequate...certainly better than a hobbled J-Roll.

Lucky Valdez has done a decent job as backup. Playoffs start just short of four weeks after the injury. Vic doing fine job leading off for now.

It's time to turn the page on Rollins. He's put in a number of good years for the club, but Larry Bowa was right all along about Rollins. The time has come to find someone you can rely on.
