Rollins remains sixth

POSTED: Thursday, July 22, 2010, 12:35 PM

Jimmy Rollins will hit sixth today for the Phillies against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Rollins was dropped to sixth for last night's game. He went 1-for-4 and is now hitting .226.

Before last night's game, manager Charlie Manuel said, "He knows what he's doing wrong. It's just a matter of correcting it."

Placido Polanco will remain in the leadoff spot against righthander Adam Wainwright.

And while Manuel continues to insist that he is not platooning in leftfield, Raul Ibanez is back in the lineup today, with Ben Francisco returning to the bench. Francisco has now played in eight of the last nine games that the Phillies faced a lefthander.

Here is the lineup:

Polanco 3B

Victorino CF

Ibanez LF

Howard 1B

Werth RF

Rollins SS

Schneider C

Valdez 2B

Hamels P

jimmy rollins is great defensively, but offensively, horrible. you cannot bat lead-off with such a low batting avg.. he never learned to work a count/take pitches which is what this team desperately needs since howard is the only hitter driving in runs. rollins is not old, but is at an age where players begin to lose a step, so if he keeps the same approach when hitting, he will not be a phillie much longer. and rollins batting avg. has gone down 3/4 years in a row? not a good sign. and ibanez is only hitting .250 because he is not playing much against left handed pitchers. he looks like he is almost done. almost time to give dom brown a chance to gain experience and get him ready for next year.

Rollins is one of the best fielding SS in the game. Offense is only half the game. As long as you move him down in the lineup and don't base your offense around him, I have no issue with him hitting as low as .265. People have gotten so used to seeing him make the plays and throws, they forget that most other teams have to not only deal with low numbers from the SS position, but also a lot more errors and infield singles that don't show in the box score.

Ruiz in the 3 hole. He crushes fastballs and will see a ton of them with Howard behind him. Do it. Do it.

Just listen to the pre-game on the radio (1210 am), and St. Louis announcer wonders why not have Howard bat 3rd? My lineup Rollins Polanco Howard Ibanez Victorino (but can only swing when he has 2 strikes) Brown Valdez Ruiz (Pitcher)

Man, I hate Jimmy 'double clutch-make the play at first as close as possible - try to hit a home run EVERY at-bat even though I am a lead of guy' rollins. -not bob levy

If they were close to having a MLB ready replacement for JRollins, I wouldn't be that upset if they moved him before the trade deadline. Since they don't, he's probably here through the end of next year.

Yikes - tis is grim. Rollins looking like he's a good field, no hit infielder (and even his range may be diminishing). We're closer to the end with Jimmy than the beginning. From MVP to .226 in 3 years. All of the sudden the team looks old and gimpy, especially with Raul plodding around in left field. They need to get younger and faster.

The bigger question is, what happens with Jimmy when his contract ends? If he keeps playing like this, as much I hate to say it, he can't stay.

Great comment Jay!!! Dave, where is the Jamie Moyer update? I'm sure he has gotten a MRI by now or maybe RAJ didn't pay the insurance bill.

I agree Alex. Ruiz is far from a sexy top of the order guy but he does at least get on base. Nothing else is working so why not give it a try. One thing to consider is that a lot of that Ruiz's OPB comes from pitchers pitching around him to get to the 8 or 9 spots in the order.

ibanez was a big mistake....he is killing us! Burrell has more hr's for the giants and he has only been playing with them for just over a month

wake me up when Cholly puts Oswalt in the 9th spot on Saturday. And they better never put Franscico 3rd again. That's ignorance. Raul shouldn't even be in that spot given how he's played of late.

Question, if Charlie has the audacity to start Francisco, Rollins, and Ibanez in the 3 hole lately, why not try out Ruiz and his 390 OBP in front of Howard? I understand the concept of staying true to your star players and having them hit out of slumps, but while Utley's out and no one else has stepped up, let's give him a shot. Obviously he doesn't have the ideal speed or power for the 3 hitter, but the lineup has been consistently shaken up since all the injuries and slumps. Ruiz and his 390 OBP has continually been stuck in the 8 hole. More of a genuine question than an attack.

why does Milt Thompson still have a job? Every coach looks great when the team is winning, but really good coaches emerge when things turn bad and they roll up their sleeves and fix it. Any time now Milt...any time

PLEASE stop putting Francisco in to start in LF. Ibanez is having a down year, but he has been hitting better than pretty much everyone except Howard lately. Francisco STINKS!!!

Lets have our best hitter hit lead-off and have Werth cointinue to hit fifth when we cant drive in any runs. Hitting .165 with runners on base. WHy not have Werth Lead Off? Since he cant drive any one and put Polanco fifth who is capable of driving in runs. Cholly keep screwing with the line up, just pick a darn line up and leave so these guys can get some consistency. Ridicuoulus having Polanco hitting Lead Off, Manuel is worst manager in baseball. Sometimes Managers get fired and its not really their faults but Cholly gets making decisions that cause his team to lose and he is in no danger of losing his job. Put this boob out to pature, make it seem like he needs to spend some time with his family. Get a real baseball man to manage club and please get a GM, maybe see if GIllick will come back. I think it all starts with poor ownership, these money hungry know nothings are ruining a once promising club. Keep pinching pennies on the obvious decsions for good pitching but give Ibanez and Howard huge long term extentions! Idiots!!!

The retun of Valdez. What a season. My hunch Cards get Oswalt and Ruben has foot in his mouth.
