Rollins likely to miss a few days. . .plus some thoughts from Manuel on trades

POSTED: Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 4:23 PM

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is not in the lineup tonight against Arizona and likely will miss a few days with a bruised foot.

Manager Charlie Manuel said Rollins' foot was really sore. He will not be put on the disabled list.

Rollins fouled an 0-1 pitch from Jason Hammel off the foot in the second inning Monday against Colorado.

Although he fell to the dirt in pain and spent several moments trying to walk it off, Rollins played the duration of the game. X-rays on the foot were negative.

Wilson Valdez will play shortstop tonight, with Placido Polanco remaining at second base and Greg Dobbs at third.

Tonight's line-up:

  1. Shane Victorino CF
  2. Placido Polanco 2B
  3. Raul Ibanez LF
  4. Ryan Howard 1B
  5. Jayson Werth RF
  6. Greg Dobbs 3B
  7. Carlos Ruiz C
  8. Wilson Valdez SS
  9. Cole Hamels LHP

 ^

Charlie Manuel made it pretty clear that he is holding out hope for Roy Oswalt, even though he didn't actually use the veteran righthander's name. The Phillies have maintained trade discussions with the Astros, but a series of complicating factors would have to work themselves out before any deal is struck. Those issues include Oswalt's hefty price tag next year, the $16 million option that he wants picked up, and his no-trade clause, which enables him to block a move anywhere he doesn't want to play.

Regardless, the Phillies still have their sights set on Oswalt.

"I think if we would get the type of starter that we want, I think that you'd see that the top of our rotation would be very strong," Manuel said, "and going down the stretch and also if we get into the playoffs, that definitely comes into play big."

And if the Phillies can't get that type of starter, will they still need to trade for a pitcher who profiles more toward the bottom of the rotation?

"I don't want us to get some guy that we've already got, if that makes sense," Manuel said. "What would be the purpose of that?"

Why should they rush Rollins back in the lineup. Major League shortstop requires some motor skills not just some lumbering football clodhopper out leaning on someone else for a few seconds at a time. The last thing they need is for the defense to fall apart because he starts throwing to the first base dugout instead of first base.

I'm not talking about toughness, I'm talking about how it can affect the game. A guy with a cage on who broke his jaw can skate all the live-long day, but baseball has far too many precise mechanics that will affect their team, affect the game. This is why I'm saying you can't compare sports...toughness and brains shouldn't be compared, either. Utley could play through that hip injury, sure...but can't play through a thumb injury, even if that ligament was even a slight sprain. Utley's injury is a cut and dried injury, but haad it been less severe, it would still put our team in jeopardy. The mechanics of hitting and fielding will net more negative results if you put brawn before brains in baseball. I've skated through a nasty ankle sprain because the boot held it stable, but would have never seen the baseball field with the same injury. I don't question the hockey player's toughness, just that an injury in baseball--while it may seem minor---might need to keep a guy on the bench because of what I would say is much more of an oppty to negatively affect the team.

chrisc4499 - I beg to differ and I've played both sports for many years. While certain injuries may affect each sport differently, you can't possibly argue the fact that hockey players are much tougher than baseball players. A baseball player gets hit on the helmet and is out of the game...a hockey player gets hit in the face...gets stitched up and is back before the period is over. Hockey players have played with fractures in their foot - you mean to tell me it's tougher to run with a bruised foot than skate with a broken one?! Sorry, I just think most baseball players are soft.....too few have Utley's mentality.

JimyD....it does no good to compare sports. I play both hockey and baseball and I'm hurting more after baseball. More importantly, baseball is a more mechanical and PRECISE sport, you can get by with injuries easier in hockey and football than you can baseball. An injury in baseball affects your game much, much more with regard to the precise mechanics required to hit, throw, and run.

I love Charlie because he can't lie. He tells it exactly the way he sees it. Unlike Amaro, Charlie tells you he wants a top pitcher. He expressed his disappointment in the off season when we traded Lee. he ever wanted that to happen but it was not his call. Come on, Amaro, et it done!

A bruise....really?! Hockey players must laugh at baseball players. They get hurt running into each other....PADDED walls.....tripping over bases.....let's see, the latest - Coghlan of the Marlins gets hurt while attempting to smash a shaving-cream pie in the face of Wes Helms! (and why can't this happen to Victorino?!) Maybe J-Roll should hang out with Ian Laperriere to learn what a real man is all about.

if junior had kept lee this would not even be discussed. in addition, even with 5 cy youngs nothing would help if the team is not hitting and scoring runs.

trade Utley for a right hand hitting 3rd baseman, move Polanco to second, trade Werth for whatever you can get and bring up Brown....

Rollins is DONE! He has been hurt almost constantly for the past two years and his MVP was a fluke. DO NOT resign him, let's go with some young talent. Rollins is a terrible lead-off hitter, rather he should be hitting 8th, you do not pay an 8 hitter big bucks. He is not even a good example for the young guys since he does not hustle. He is done.

Rollins ain't soft he just wants a little time to get his foot back to 100% that way he can play at 100% Thats what the Phils need... everyone to play at 100%. And lately that ain't been happin'

I truly believe that if Manuel had something attached to his brain stem (medulla oblongata) he might be dangerous. Its almost like watching Monty Python's "Meaning of Life" to endure the bungling imbecilic blunders of Amaro and Manuel. I feel sorry the players, and would love to hear what they say when they see a walking disaster like Lidge walking toward the mound in the 9th inning. A smart GM would target a grade A bullpen stopper, keep Happ and bring up Worley and Brown. End of story. But that is as likely as a UFO landing on the Washington Mall:-)

Hey, anyone here foul a 90-95 mph hardball of the instep of their foot? Didn't think so. Go take a hammer and strike your instep, then take a walk. Shortstops do the most running on the field, a deep bruise not only affects his batting, it affects his ability to cover 2nd, to get to the hole on backhanders, to get in cutoff position, turning a double play etc. Ease up on the testosterroneous comments.

Look at the NFL injury reports ... lots of guys miss time with bruised feet. In two seconds of searching on Google, I found that Marion Barber left a game in the first quarter with a bruised foot in 2008 and then missed the game the next week. And Shaun Alexander missed two weeks with a bruised foot in 2006. (Hope that doesn't make you want to throw away your NFL footie pajamas and start following soccer.)

With all of his leg injuries, let him take a day or two to make sure he doesn't aggravate anything. It's not soft, it's smart ... unlike many of the posters here.

Muckraker - the NFL player wouldn't have a game the day after he bruised it so as long as J Roll is back by next Monday he is as "tough" as a football player.

@Murph... Let one of them genetically engineered steroid addicts foul a pitch off of their foot and see how soon they can play? Ahhh, next week??

that's when you know the time on the old career clock is ticking to an end - when the nicks and bruises start adding up to multiple stays on the DL or bench. is there another speedy, above average hitting, solid fielding shortstop in the pipeline? if not the trade focus needs to shift.

Vote for Dickie is correct. This year just isn't meant to be. The sweep of Colorado is fool's good, just as the sweep of Cincinnati was. Trade Werth and get something to help win it all NEXT year. Oswalt only handcuffs the budget even more!!

if Rube hadnt been sleeping for the last month and thinking we could get by with 2 months of Valdez/Dobbs/Ransom, this would be less of a deal...they really need a sweep of this bad Arizona team, but once again its playing with a weak lineup time....
