Rollins likely to miss a few days. . .plus some thoughts from Manuel on trades

POSTED: Tuesday, July 27, 2010, 4:23 PM

Phillies shortstop Jimmy Rollins is not in the lineup tonight against Arizona and likely will miss a few days with a bruised foot.

Manager Charlie Manuel said Rollins' foot was really sore. He will not be put on the disabled list.

Rollins fouled an 0-1 pitch from Jason Hammel off the foot in the second inning Monday against Colorado.

Although he fell to the dirt in pain and spent several moments trying to walk it off, Rollins played the duration of the game. X-rays on the foot were negative.

Wilson Valdez will play shortstop tonight, with Placido Polanco remaining at second base and Greg Dobbs at third.

Tonight's line-up:

  1. Shane Victorino CF
  2. Placido Polanco 2B
  3. Raul Ibanez LF
  4. Ryan Howard 1B
  5. Jayson Werth RF
  6. Greg Dobbs 3B
  7. Carlos Ruiz C
  8. Wilson Valdez SS
  9. Cole Hamels LHP

Charlie Manuel made it pretty clear that he is holding out hope for Roy Oswalt, even though he didn't actually use the veteran righthander's name. The Phillies have maintained trade discussions with the Astros, but a series of complicating factors would have to work themselves out before any deal is struck. Those issues include Oswalt's hefty price tag next year, the $16 million option that he wants picked up, and his no-trade clause, which enables him to block a move anywhere he doesn't want to play.

Regardless, the Phillies still have their sights set on Oswalt.

"I think if we would get the type of starter that we want, I think that you'd see that the top of our rotation would be very strong," Manuel said, "and going down the stretch and also if we get into the playoffs, that definitely comes into play big."

And if the Phillies can't get that type of starter, will they still need to trade for a pitcher who profiles more toward the bottom of the rotation?

"I don't want us to get some guy that we've already got, if that makes sense," Manuel said. "What would be the purpose of that?"

Hope this convinces Ruben to stop kicking Oswalt's tires and go get an infielder (and a reliever while he's at it).

Take a look at the lineup - it's sure going to be crowded around second base!!

Typical phillies move. No one to play SS so they put two fielders at second

Murph, how much time do you think a pro football player would miss with a bruised foot?

This year is cursed. Ruben, don't mortgage any future for this year. It'll be a waste. Did someone take down that little Willaim Penn from on top of the Comcast tower????

if Rube hadnt been sleeping for the last month and thinking we could get by with 2 months of Valdez/Dobbs/Ransom, this would be less of a deal...they really need a sweep of this bad Arizona team, but once again its playing with a weak lineup time....

Vote for Dickie is correct. This year just isn't meant to be. The sweep of Colorado is fool's good, just as the sweep of Cincinnati was. Trade Werth and get something to help win it all NEXT year. Oswalt only handcuffs the budget even more!!

that's when you know the time on the old career clock is ticking to an end - when the nicks and bruises start adding up to multiple stays on the DL or bench. is there another speedy, above average hitting, solid fielding shortstop in the pipeline? if not the trade focus needs to shift.
