It can't be any worse than what has been going down the past six games, can it?

Charlie Manuel posted his lineup for tonight's game against Oakland, and it was a doozy.

1. Jayson Werth, RF

2. Chase Utley, 2B

3. Jimmy Rollins, SS

4. Pat Burrell, LF

5. Ryan Howard, DH

6. Pedro Feliz, 3B

7. Shane Victorino, CF

8. Chris Coste, C

9. Eric Bruntlett, 1B

Manuel acknowledged in his pregame meeting with reporters that the lineup change is a product of the Phillies' recent struggles.

“More than likely, if we were winning, I’d go with what’s winning for us,” he said.

Five players are making their season debuts in their respective slots.

Thoughts?

I don't have a problem with it. You have to do something. Desparate times call for desparate measures! As a matter of fact I like it! Cholly will look like a genius!

Maybe he took a cue from Billy Martin and pulled the lineup out of a hat.

Stupid. Is this the line up that will take us through the rest of the year? No? Then why do it? I don't believe in the "let's shake things up" theory. This reminds me of last year on opening day when Charlie batted Howard 3, Utley clean up. How long did that last? One game. This is a deperate move by a desperate manager. Let's just stick with the real line up, this team is too talented not to win.

Batting Howard 5th (or lower) should have been something Uncle Cholly did about a month ago. I really hope that they offer him up in a trade for pitching because he is your prototypical one tool player. Sure he drives in a lot of runs but just think what he could do if he "only" struck out 150 times in a year. That means putting the ball in play 50 more times where at least something could happen. Send him to the AL where he can DH and concentrate on just hitting. Move Utley to 1st and bring up their vaunted 2nd base prospect. It would add more speed to the order and better their defense. This recent bad streak is showing that they need to manufacture more runs instead of waiting for the long ball. Unfortunately, playing at their little league field probably gets them started on some bad habits.

Ryan Howard has been a liability for weeks... I agree with the skipper's move

I would prefer Dobbs at First Base instead of Bruntlett.

I'm just glad Coste is in there (why he still isn't an everyday player is absolutely baffling). But a lineup shakeup is good. I think they are missing Aaron Rowand's presence this year.

I have no problem with the lineup changes. Burrell and Howard's swap is long overdo. I'm not a Burrell apologist, but his season is so outrageously better than Howard's. And I continue to be baffled by Coste's slot in the 8 hole. How high does his average have to go before he gets into the top 6?

seemslike a panic move which I disagree with. There is no hitting and Iammoreconcerned about our ability to hold a lead in a low run, close game. When are wegoing to consider moving Flash Gordon, who has blown how many oppportunities?? This is our first slump which really sucksbecause our last 5 losses are against teams weneedto beat in the world series.Living in LasVegas andwatching us against the Angels was nauseating at best. We were not only out played but out hustled in frontof our own fans

It doesn't hurt to try something different. Shuffle the cards, cut the deck. When you lose six straight you start tweaking things. I think every now and then you are gonna second guess yourself.-Besides we needed some pop at the bottom of the lineup.

At 12:40 Cholly looks like a genius! No one said it's permanent though, but all you back seat managers can lay off the keys tonight.K K followed a strong outing by Moyer and maybe the starters might get through their rough spot and garner some wins!

If it works than go ahead Charley. Do what you think is best for our team!

Bill R4 has the exact right idea- trade Howard for young pitching prospects, move Utley to first, and bring up Cardenas. It will improve our defense, speed, pitching... I see it as an almost foolproof plan to improve this team.
