Rollins, Victorino win Gold Gloves again
Daily News staff
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins and centerfield Shane Victorino again took home National League Gold Glove awards today.
Rollins won for the third consecutive year and had a .990 fielding percentage, the best in the major leagues at his position. He committed a league-best and career-low six errors in 607 total chances. Among all NL shortstops in 2009, Rollins ranked second in games (152) and innings (1364.2), fourth in putouts (212), sixth in total chances and assists (389) and eighth in double plays (72).
Rollins becomes the fifth Phillie to win at least three Gold Gloves, joining Mike Schmidt (10), Garry Maddox (8), Manny Trillo (3) and Rolen (3). Last season, Rollins was the first Phillies shortstop to win the award in consecutive seasons (2007-09) and the first Phillie to do so since Scott Rolen (2000-01). The last NL player to win three straight Gold Gloves at shortstop was Rey Ordonez, of the New York Mets (1997-99).
“I would like to thank the managers and coaches who felt I was worthy of a Gold Glove Award,” Rollins said in a statement. “Defense is a very important part of my game and it truly is an honor to be recognized as one of the best defensive players in the league.”
Victorino won his second consecutive Gold Glove. He made one error in 345 chances for a fielding percentage of .997. Last year, he made two errors in 323 chances.
He started a career-high 149 games in centerfield for the Phillies and led all NL centerfielders in fielding percentage, was second in games and innings (1330.1), fourth in both total chances and putouts (336) and was tied for fifth in assists (8). Victorino is the first Phillies outfielder to win the award in consecutive seasons since Maddox, who did so in eight straight seasons (1975-82).
“I take a lot of pride in fielding my position so it is an honor to be awarded with another Gold Glove this season,” Victorino said in a statement. “I would like to thank the managers and coaches who voted for me and who believe that I am one of the best in a league full of outstanding players.”
This is the 11th time in franchise history the Phillies have had multiple Gold Glove winners. It is the third straight year that the Phillies have had multiple winners (2007: Rollins and Aaron Rowand and 2008-09: Rollins and Victorino).
The list of winners:
First base: Adrian Gonzalez, San Diego
Second base: Orlando Hudson, Los Angeles
Shortstop: Jimmy Rollins, Phillies
Third base: Ryan Zimmerman, Washington
Outfielders: Shane Victorino, Phillies; Michael Bourn, Houston; Matt Kemp, Los Angeles
Catcher: Yadier Molina, St. Louis
Pitcher: Adam Wainright, St. Louis
The Gold Glove is a farce Chase Utley leads the NL in UZR and Dewan +/- for the last three years and doesn't win one Gold Glove over that time span. Also, Shane isn't deserving this year Nyer Morgan is a much better outfielder, and had a much better season. Tulo should have gotten the nod at SS Rob Neyer sucks
The Boston Strangler is right on one account, we are homers here....BUT....you are crazy if you don't think Utley is an excellent fielder. You don't see him making web gems because he positions himself so well you don't find him having to stretch himself as much as others do. I feel if anything his hitting overshadows his fielding, much the same way with Pujols. When it comes time for HOF consideration I don't think much barring a major career ending injury will keep him out. In the words of another great Homer, "I am so smart, s m r t....DOH!!" trade rollins, his bat is killing us. zwarte piet

Kevin Kouzmanoff of the Padres had just 3 errors and a .990 fielding average. Zimmerman had 17 errors. Pretty amazing. It could be argued that Rollins and Victorino not only won, but won at the what are the 2 most challenging defensive positions. Impressive. CarpGuy

Jason Werth is also on the fence for a Gold Glove. bluejfk
First let’s get this out of the way: Ryan Howard was not GG worthy at first base this season. While he did improve defensively, he's still not in the upper echelon with Albert Pujols and Adrian Gonzalez. In regards to Utley and Hudson, I don't think either man is a poor choice for the award. I did find it interesting that the Fielding Bible (considered "experts" on the defensive value of major league players) awarded Chase Utley many more votes (73) than Orlando Hudson (47) in their yearly voting. However, ultimately it's the coaches and managers that decide the GGs which has to make you wonder...is this award even relevant anymore? How accurately can a coach or manager rate each player at every position on their defense? Case-in-point: Derek Jeter. If I remember correctly the guys at The Fielding Bible rated him one of the worst, if not the worst, defensive player in baseball either last year or the year before. Now, a year old, he suddenly has become the best fielder in the AL at SS? I find that hard to believe, especially when he only drew 3 votes total from the guys at the FB. In the end I think that winning the award is heavily reliant on the player’s reputation and, surprisingly, their bat. How can a player get noticed in the field unless they’re recognized at the plate too? Unless, of course they are far and away better than everyone else in the league, which I don’t think you can say about any player in the league anymore. KWM5046
shirleyf: Did you read the article? Let me help you out: "Rollins won for the third consecutive year and had a .990 fielding percentage, the best in the major leagues at his position. He committed a league-best and career-low six errors in 607 total chances." BEST IN THE MAJORS. They don't give the Glove for WS performances. FloridaBill

Want no parts of Rodney... dude is a lunatic... throws 100 but will on occassion walk the bases loaded and then hit the tying run before walking in the winner... headcase... as for 3B my guy is garrett atkins... guy had 1/2 bad season after 3 or 4 good ones and colorado throwing him the scrap heap... im all over that... on another note i love guys calling th elidge trade a bad move because bourne got a gold glove haha... clowns man... clowns... i guess the ultimate goal of winning a world series is not as important as gold gloves... hahahaaaaaaaaaaa Sillies
who got the Manager gold glove? I would have given it to Charlie... dude's got range... Sillies

only 9, would you give away the championship of 2008 for borne? because we mostly don't get the championship without lidge...it turned out to be a good deal for both sides-perhaps better for us because we were able to capture the championship and will be contenders for years to come. TINA- The gold glove is still a shade too much of reputation and bizarro-world strange in that a player's "O" numbers seem to play a hand. Howard was a huge improvement, but not a GG winner. I had fun watching him this year, he made great strides in the field as well as for reducing his K count. Utley is a hair behind, but he'll win it eventually. I wonder how close Werth came, he had one of the highest (if not THE highest) chances in the league--meaning, he gets to more balls in play than most if not all. I would like to see Ruiz and Feliz get some more credit, but Zimmerman is awesome at 3rd and anyone named "Molina" will be hard to top at the C position
michael bourne won a golden glove..the same man who was traded for b. lidge, we had a glimpse of what bourne would be able to do when he was in phila. I knew even when they traded him this was the WRONG move. lidge had a great season in 2008 but 2009 a disaster he was the main reason phila. did not win 100 games in the regular season and a big reason they did not win the world series. and manuel is still saying he is my closer. rollins and victorino are great fielders. only 9- Go with Figgins you would actually have a "Lead off" hitter! Finally!!!!!
Glad to see Vic win another one. His Defense is so widely overlooked outside of this city... and even sometimes INSIDE this city. DrM
Congrats Jimmy and Shane. Well-earned. If there's another deserving Phillie, it's Chooch. Feliz was very good, but I see a lot of Nats games and Zimmerman is in a league of his own. wooderice- i don't think post season games count.. congrats to them both. feliz could have one also.
Utley is the best baseball player the Phillies have. He doesn't have the best fielding percentage or the most HRs, but that doesn't take anything away from him. cesegal

boston strangler...stfu. Utley DID deserve the award. Best 2B in the NL. Husdon is mediocre at best you clown. What you gonna say next ? That Rollins is a mediocre SS ?? Will.i.Am- On Werth hitting seventh - I just threw that out there because I have no idea how Manuel would handle a line-up that includes both Beltre and Werth. I'm as big a Jayson Werth proponent as anybody. Frankly, the best line-up that keeps Rollins at No. 1 (which is where Manuel likes him...that's a whole different issue), might be Utley hitting second, Werth third, Howard fourth, Beltre fifth, Ibanez sixth, and Victorino seventh. But I'm glad you guys seized on those four words, because it means you read it close. PhillyPhilly - I'm sure Rodney is on their list. But at this point in time a lot of guys are on their list. It'll be tough to gauge who they have a realistic shot at getting until the signing period begins and everyone can talk numbers. Maximsud - I thought I did address the leadoff spot. If the Phils go hard after Figgins, it ain't to hit second. Mick314 - I was wondering why my hair smelled like Jameson.
Funny how Victorino and Utley both made crucial defensive misplays in the post season. Utley is the smartest defensive 2B if not the best glove. Rollins has great range and a great arm and deserves the award. Howard? Went from a D to a B-. I give him credit for the hard work but he's a long haul from a GG. Feliz is steady and solid but not close to Rollen when he was here. steelydad
Where was FELIZ? eisenser
Rollins defense was average in the world series. Feliz should have won one. shirleyf- wrong, utley didn't deserve the gold glove and he gets plenty of recognition where he excels - at the plate. i'm a bog utley fan, but the reality is, he's an above average fielder, but not great. hudson is still better (and the postseason doesn't factor into gold glove voting). and howard improved but isn't anywhere near gonzalez yet. come on guys, try to be a little objective here, not such homers.
Hey, Bobby Abreu won a gold glove with the Phillies, which should tell you all you need to know about the validity of the award. Ramon
Utley was clearly the best 2B in the national league, and again doesn't get the recognition. The shame of it all is he's been the best for each of the last five years and hasn't gotten one gold glove. I really hope this doesn't affect him when it's time for him to get in the HOF. Rollins didn't deserve it this year, Tulo was clearly better. hillyinphilly
Congratulations to Jimmy and Shane! This is an honor very well-deserved, they are top notch defensive players in the NL. I happen to think Jimmy is the best defensive shortstop in the Majors!!! Chase was also deserving as Hudson didn't even play the entire year and limited in the post season. Only goes to show how deep are Phils are!!! delbluehen
agree with you catnameddomino - they left the box score up last offseason, but this just keeps bringing back feelings of what might've been... Lando_M
Yeah, I agree with cat named domino. Nutburgers

Can we take down the box score on the pages with Phillies' articles? I don't need a reminder about what happened in game 6. catnameddomino
nice going? rapbuffy- no, howard should have won - looked great all year playing D at 1st base. dpcoz
Utley should have won at 2B, as he was a much better fielder this year than Hudson. sil campusano
