Rollins, Victorino win Gold Gloves again
Daily News staff
Shortstop Jimmy Rollins and centerfield Shane Victorino again took home National League Gold Glove awards today.
Rollins won for the third consecutive year and had a .990 fielding percentage, the best in the major leagues at his position. He committed a league-best and career-low six errors in 607 total chances. Among all NL shortstops in 2009, Rollins ranked second in games (152) and innings (1364.2), fourth in putouts (212), sixth in total chances and assists (389) and eighth in double plays (72).
Rollins becomes the fifth Phillie to win at least three Gold Gloves, joining Mike Schmidt (10), Garry Maddox (8), Manny Trillo (3) and Rolen (3). Last season, Rollins was the first Phillies shortstop to win the award in consecutive seasons (2007-09) and the first Phillie to do so since Scott Rolen (2000-01). The last NL player to win three straight Gold Gloves at shortstop was Rey Ordonez, of the New York Mets (1997-99).
“I would like to thank the managers and coaches who felt I was worthy of a Gold Glove Award,” Rollins said in a statement. “Defense is a very important part of my game and it truly is an honor to be recognized as one of the best defensive players in the league.”
Victorino won his second consecutive Gold Glove. He made one error in 345 chances for a fielding percentage of .997. Last year, he made two errors in 323 chances.
He started a career-high 149 games in centerfield for the Phillies and led all NL centerfielders in fielding percentage, was second in games and innings (1330.1), fourth in both total chances and putouts (336) and was tied for fifth in assists (8). Victorino is the first Phillies outfielder to win the award in consecutive seasons since Maddox, who did so in eight straight seasons (1975-82).
“I take a lot of pride in fielding my position so it is an honor to be awarded with another Gold Glove this season,” Victorino said in a statement. “I would like to thank the managers and coaches who voted for me and who believe that I am one of the best in a league full of outstanding players.”
This is the 11th time in franchise history the Phillies have had multiple Gold Glove winners. It is the third straight year that the Phillies have had multiple winners (2007: Rollins and Aaron Rowand and 2008-09: Rollins and Victorino).
The list of winners:
First base: Adrian Gonzalez, San Diego
Second base: Orlando Hudson, Los Angeles
Shortstop: Jimmy Rollins, Phillies
Third base: Ryan Zimmerman, Washington
Outfielders: Shane Victorino, Phillies; Michael Bourn, Houston; Matt Kemp, Los Angeles
Catcher: Yadier Molina, St. Louis
Pitcher: Adam Wainright, St. Louis

shirleyf: Did you read the article? Let me help you out: "Rollins won for the third consecutive year and had a .990 fielding percentage, the best in the major leagues at his position. He committed a league-best and career-low six errors in 607 total chances." BEST IN THE MAJORS. They don't give the Glove for WS performances. FloridaBill
First let’s get this out of the way: Ryan Howard was not GG worthy at first base this season. While he did improve defensively, he's still not in the upper echelon with Albert Pujols and Adrian Gonzalez. In regards to Utley and Hudson, I don't think either man is a poor choice for the award. I did find it interesting that the Fielding Bible (considered "experts" on the defensive value of major league players) awarded Chase Utley many more votes (73) than Orlando Hudson (47) in their yearly voting. However, ultimately it's the coaches and managers that decide the GGs which has to make you wonder...is this award even relevant anymore? How accurately can a coach or manager rate each player at every position on their defense? Case-in-point: Derek Jeter. If I remember correctly the guys at The Fielding Bible rated him one of the worst, if not the worst, defensive player in baseball either last year or the year before. Now, a year old, he suddenly has become the best fielder in the AL at SS? I find that hard to believe, especially when he only drew 3 votes total from the guys at the FB. In the end I think that winning the award is heavily reliant on the player’s reputation and, surprisingly, their bat. How can a player get noticed in the field unless they’re recognized at the plate too? Unless, of course they are far and away better than everyone else in the league, which I don’t think you can say about any player in the league anymore. KWM5046
Jason Werth is also on the fence for a Gold Glove. bluejfk

Kevin Kouzmanoff of the Padres had just 3 errors and a .990 fielding average. Zimmerman had 17 errors. Pretty amazing. It could be argued that Rollins and Victorino not only won, but won at the what are the 2 most challenging defensive positions. Impressive. CarpGuy

trade rollins, his bat is killing us. zwarte piet
The Boston Strangler is right on one account, we are homers here....BUT....you are crazy if you don't think Utley is an excellent fielder. You don't see him making web gems because he positions himself so well you don't find him having to stretch himself as much as others do. I feel if anything his hitting overshadows his fielding, much the same way with Pujols. When it comes time for HOF consideration I don't think much barring a major career ending injury will keep him out. In the words of another great Homer, "I am so smart, s m r t....DOH!!" The Gold Glove is a farce Chase Utley leads the NL in UZR and Dewan +/- for the last three years and doesn't win one Gold Glove over that time span. Also, Shane isn't deserving this year Nyer Morgan is a much better outfielder, and had a much better season. Tulo should have gotten the nod at SS Rob Neyer sucks
